A Prayer chain for our

Please Don't break it!

GOD BLESS YOU
FOR PASSING IT ON!

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God,

Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek ?
To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
'No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.'

The Honda crotch rocketrider was traveling at approximately
85 mph. The VW driver was talking on a cell phone when she
pulled out from a side street, apparently not seeing the
motorcycle. The riders reaction time was not sufficient
enough to avoid this accident. The car had two passengers
and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them.
The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact
and landed 20 feet from where the collision took place.
All three involved (two in the car and the bike rider) were
killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at

If it is The Boat That Rocked, then take it for what it is - a comedy film.  It's not supposed to be a documentary !

I quite enjoyed it on that basis except for the fact that the DJs ranged in age from around 40 to at least 60 !  The actual pirate radio DJs were mostly in their 20s.

Is this the movie called "The Boat That Rocked" - it may have been renamed for the US / international market?

If so, this is a fictional account of a 60s pirate radio station, an off-shore boat moored just outside the UK legal limits of broadcast restriction. A rom-com.

The movie came and quickly went - it got panned critically. I didn't go to see it - I can't abide Richard Curtis (writer and director). I know: I'm prejudiced, and judge all his work against "Four Weddings And A Heart Attack", so maybe I'm not the one to ask. Or give comment.

Nice idea, though. At least High Grant wasn't in it.

I think it is time again to call attention to a really cool online archive of rock 'n' roll radio programs:

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s (most of it during the pre-Internet era for many of us) James Marshall played CDs and records every Saturday on radio station WFMU in East Orange, New Jersey.  On air his name was "The Hound".  He played all manner of 1950s and 1960s rock 'n' roll, rockabilly, surf, garage, blues, doo wop, soul, and hillbilly.  Really great stuff.  He had in-studio and phone-in interviews with legendary musicians (some who are no longer with us) and almost-famous superfans.  One ambitious fan named Brian Redman collects tapes of The Hound's programs and makes them available to hear on the Internet at this website:

Brian has just added 16 new programs to the archive.  I think you'll really enjoy hearing some of these programs.

The Hound is still around and has a blog here:

As to that radio station that aired his programs, WFMU is a popular non-commercial radio station in the New York City/New Jersey area, with similar DJ programs these days, notably with Dave the Spazz, Rex, and Michael Shelly.  They keep their programs archived for years.  You can hear them here:

If all this doesn't keep you busy enough you might give my blog a peek, too:

Jim Dickinson, as much as being a musician, was, I think, the most quotable person in the Memphis music scene, as much as Sam Phillips.  Whenever good books, articles, or liner notes about Memphis music are written, Jim Dickinson was the local go-to guy for the best observations.

I have copied and pasted some posts from my old blog on my new blog.  They are not all in chronological sequence, but that is not really important.  Any rate, please give it a look now and then and leave a comment when moved to do so.  I hope you enjoy it and learn a thing or two.

In the last few years, many of the best books I have read about music are not about musicians but other people in the music business. Biographies about record producers and record label owners are very readily available these days. Here are my favorites:

"Spinning Blues into Gold: The Chess Brothers and the Legendary Chess Records"
by Nadine Cohodas
Both a biography of Leonard and a history of the Chess label. Add to this book recent biographies of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, and the book about Chuck Berry's legal problems and you get quite a story about Chess Records. There are two other biographies about Leonard Chess. One I am not wild about and I haven't read the other.

"Dewey and Elvis: The Life and Times of a Rock 'n' Roll Deejay"
by Louis Cantor
Very little about Elvis, actually, and that's OK. This book is about the legendary radio DJ Dewey Phillips, in a town full of legendary DJs. When I finished this book, I felt as if I had prowled through every street and haunt in downtown Memphis. The quality of writing in this book is a massive improvement over the author's previous book which was about WDIA radio.

"My First 90 Years Plus 3"
by Kenneth F. Nelson (Ken Nelson)
Ken Nelson produced thousands of recordings for Capitol Records and I have long thought of him as one of the best producers. So little had ever been publicly known about Ken Nelson. Now, at the end of his life he tells about everything, more detail then I would ever expect to known about Nelson, even stuff like family problems.

"Record Makers and Breakers: Voices of the Independent Rock 'n' Roll Pioneers" by John Broven
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed reading this wonderful book about independent record labels from the mid 1940s through the late 1960s. I really think John Broven deserves to be nominated for literary awards for this book. Are you aware of book awards for music history, oral history, or business & enterprise history that could possibly be awarded for this book? It's that good.

Next up is the autobiography of Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller. I'm really looking forward to this one!

I think the biography of Sam Phillips was published in England only? Am I right about that? This may explain why I've heard little about it.

I regret not reading Jerry Wexler's bio while it was still in print. Used copies are pricey. Have any of you read Ahmet Ertegun's book?

It always seems like famous people tend to die in groups of three.  I guess it sorta happened again this week:  David Carradine (the most famous), Koko Taylor, blues singer from Chicago who holds the distinction of having the LAST blues hit single on the Chess label.  Now I see Sam Butera has died.  He was the saxophone player/bandleader for Louis Prima during the 1950 and 1960s plus he had a lot of records on his own and still played in Las Vegas until very recently.

I have also just now managed to get "Bill Haney's Atlanta Soul
Brotherhood" Volume One on CD for slightly over $20.00, also from
Amazon Associates. Maybe the recent economic downturn has caused
dealers to lower prices? Both CDs are filled with great tunes by
singers and musicians I have never heard of except for Arthur.

I can't help but think it was a real uphill battle for artists
working with an independent producer and for independent producers
themselves. The producers have to put money up front to produce
recordings and hope to successfully shop the masters around to labels
with nationwide distribution. All this time and money have to happen
before ever selling a record. I can't help but think that most
labels would give lower priority to leased masters like these because
these same labels would just about have to give a bigger push to
artists they have under contract themselves. There is a bigger
investment here. That I would think would lessen the chance of a
record from a leased master to get heard and become a hit. At this
point its just about up to listerners or a symathetic DJ somewhere to
really push a record that no one else is paying any attention to.
That could help explain the lack of hits produced by Bill Haney
released on big labels like Stax, Atlantic or even Mala, in spite of
the obvious quality of the performances heard on many of his records.

Now, take Norman Petty as another very similar example of an
independent producer shopping masters around to big labels. At least
his was successul in getting big hits for about a half a dozen
artists in the 1950s and '60s, the biggest of which was, of course,
Buddy Holly.

I am happy to report that I managed to get the CD "Bill Haney's Atlanta
Southern Soul Brotherhood Volume 2" for just under $15.00 from a dealer
at Amazon Associates. A few copies showed up there last week for under
$20.00. For some reason these were all priced about half the offered
price for volume one. I can't find volume one for under $35.00 and
that is more than I am willing to pay mostly for one track by Arthur
Alexander. Actually, I really like everything on volume two. Great,
well-performed tunes all.

Arthur's sole (soul?) track here is "You Ain't For Real". The horns
are little shakey and in one spot I hear Arthur strain a little on a
tricky note but really enjoyable just the same.

One other track sounds a lot like Arthur, but I really don't think it's
him: "My Love Is True" by Jarvis Jackson.

Dear friend,
i would like to introduce a good company who trades mainly in electornic products.
Now the company is under sales promotion, all the products are sold nearly at its cost.
They provide the best service to customers, they provide you with original products of
good  quality, and what is more, the price is a surprising happiness to you!
It is realy a good chance for shopping.just grasp the opportunity, Now or never!

I've corrected the label for that folder, Mark. Thanks for the heads up.

Derek:

Always nice to see something new with the Arthur Alexander group.
Thanks for the reprint of the review in MOJO.

By the way, the radio program you added to the Files section with
Arthur Alexander interviewed by "The Hound" was on radio station WFMU
not MFMU. Minor typo. If anyone would like to hear other 1980s and
1990s radio programs of the Hound on WFMU you can hear them at
www.thehound.net. I was happy to donate a cassette tape of a 1990s
program not already on the Hound website archive. It should eventually
be added by the Hound webmaster. These days there are a few other DJs
at WFMU who play lots of cool 1950s and 1960s rock 'n' roll,
rhythm 'n' blues and honky tonk country: Dave the Spazz, Rex, Michael
Shelly. You can hear them at www.wfmu.org. It is not at all unusual
to hear Arthur on their programs.
