Hi Folks

Anyone who enjoyed, or missed, the recent Ashtar gig at Sheffield
Boardwalk will be pleased to hear that there is a chance to catch them
again for free at the George Hotel, Water Street, Buxton this
Wednesday night (9th August). The George is situated opposite Buxton
Opera House & is renowned for its great atmosphere & a popular venue
for other CRS faves such as Strangefish & Jump. I have never had a bad
night there, the bands always enjoy themselves & often throw in a few
surprises to boot!

Ashtar have had a great time touring In Germany, Holland, Scotland,
Ireland & England gathering lots of new fans along the way, but they
are (with the exception of Rob) sadly flying back to Brazil at the end
of the week, so this may be your last chance to catch them until next
year & to give them a great send off.

Rob especially would love to see as many Ashtar fans and CRS members
there as possible because Buxton is his home town and he needs to
balance out the number of ex-girlfriends / schoolmates & Buxtonians in
general who will be coming along for a butchers :o) !!

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible!

I've now added photos from the Bilston and Malvern gigs to my website:

I particularly enjoyed the latter, Ashtar's sound has steadily improved
throughout this
tour and it's been great to be able to see them again and hear my favourite
songs
played live.

Just had a great couple of days catching the band at their Malvern and Newark
gigs.

The Malvern appearance ended up being a free-entry show in the bandstand in
the Priory Park there, and was the first time this had ever been used to host a
rock
gig. A marquee had been erected some 20-30 yards back from the stand, mainly
as a precuation in case it had rained beforehand, and I was somewhat nervous
beforehand as I was the one who had put the band in touch with the organisers.
But my fears, on this occasion, were to prove groundless as mother nature - or
should I call her Urantia? - gave the band a huge kiss of approval by sending us
the hottest day in May that Britain has seen since 1953. It also helped that
the
local weekly paper (the Malvern Gazette), which came out on the day of the gig,
had included a 3" x 3" feature about the gig including a colour photo. So when
I
arrived slightly early to help out with stewarding there were already a fair
number
of people ensconsed upon the grassy slopes of the park having undoubtedly been
enjoying the warm afternoon. It was also great to see Alistair, Sal and Ash,
and
local Karnataka fans Tony and Anne Pease come along, as well as a number of
my own friends from Malvern.

My friend had also laid on a local band, K'Aliens, who played for about 45
minutes as support, and then Ashtar were on with at last the chance to play the
best part of two hours' set. By now the slopes were well occupied with a good
few hundred people. As well as their best tracks from their first album, Ashtar
also played a number of new songs, some traditional celtic covers, one Loreena
McKennit song, and even a version of Renaissance's 'Ashes Are Burining'. This
eclectic mixture was well appreciated by the crowd. At the bottom of the slopes
there was a level, rectangular area, directly between the bandstand and where
the
marquee (with mixing desk) had been erected, and as the night wore on a number
of people started to come down and dance to the music, some inspired by the
traditional celtic passages and others by the metallic passages of Ashtar's own
songs. I, of course, was waving the camera anywhere and everywhere - photos
coming soon.

At the end, Ashtar were given raptuous applause by the crowd, who even wanted
them to continue playing beyond the 11pm curfew that was set. Another local
friend, who is a bit of a freelance reporter, then asked me if I she could do a
short
interview for a local podcast, so I introduced her to Luis, who was naturally
happy to oblige. Meanwhile, Sal had kindly volunteered to man Ashtar's merch
stall and managed to sell a worthwhile quantity of CDs, shirts etc.

So in the end it a good time was had by everybody. My thanks in particular to
Alan Turnbull and all his volunteer assistants at Floating Lotus, Malvern
Theatres
for helping with equipment, Sal and Ash for taking care of the Merch, and of
course Ashtar for being there and playing so well and so enjoyably.

The following morning (yesterday) I drove over to Newark, where Ashtar were
headlining the beer festival. Again they were able to play a decent length set.
This time I had left the camera at the hotel - apart from beer and expensive
SLRs
being an unwise mixture, so I deemed, this also gave me the chance to appreciate
the music more fully. Fernanda's voice seems to get better and better - I
wouldn't
be at all surprise if she wins the CRS Female Vocalist award before too much
longer. The others were all in fine form too, and on both occasions I felt the
longer set allowed them to get much more fully in the groove and deliver some
storming performances towards the end.

Unfortunately, by the time they had finished playing this time all the beer had
run
out! :O So I didn't, in the end, have quite as much to drink as I had been
expecting. But who cares when you've just spent the last two evenings at great
Ashtar gigs!

Ashtar now fly back to Brazil tomorrow, but they are hoping to come to the UK
and Europe again next June/July, so here's hoping they will be better still by
then.
In the meantime, they will be working towards another album. This time they
have been selling a 'mini-CD' called Soaring with four good pre-production
numbers on it, this is more than a tasty appetiser for the next full offering!

Keep shining
Adie

  Floating Lotus Marquee Stage

We were pleasantly surprised to gain permission from MHDC and the local
magistrates
to present:

  Ashtar

in Malvern Wintergardens (Priory Park) on

Friday 27th May -- 7:30 till 11pm

Ashtar won the "Classic Rock Society" Best New Band last year, and are back in
Europe
for a
select number of gigs this May. On route, these 6 Brazilians from Rio (and a
keyboard
player
from Buxton), are to present us a good dose of mystical Celtic roots, fused with
classic,
and
a snippet of thundering progressive rock.

We mayall trust the weather will avail......

Licensed bar and snacks (ID will be required for those who could be challenged
as
under 18)

In support:

K'Aliens

A similarly inspired group of more local Celtic rockers from around
Worcestershire.
These were
greatly appreciated at the Three Daft Monkeys event last year, and are back for
a
further infusion.

Entry is free, although donations and support for our bar would be appreciated.

This is a great opportunity for the people of Malvern to enjoy their park, and
make the
most of the
welcome support of the local council officers, magistrates.

To the many localfolk who have already agreed to aid in keeping this event safe
and
cared for,
many thanks.

Kind regards
Floating Lotus

My photos from Rotherham are now online at

I also took photos of Dead Like Harry and Mostly Autumn from the same night,
these are at

     <www.roscalen.com/DeadLikeHarry/Rotherham050507/> and
     <www.roscalen.com/MostlyAutumn/Rotherham050507/>.

Great to see Luiz, Fernanda and the guys again, and I'm planning to catch up
again at least once before they go back to Brazil. This is likely to be either
at
Newark or a gig the day before at Malvern - the latter is not yet confirmed
though
arrangments so far appear to be proceeding slowly. I'll let everyone know when
I
have more details.

At Rotherham, the band were also selling a mini-CD Soaring, which contains
pre-production (but better quality than demo) recordings of some of the tracks
for
their next full album. I can thoroughly recommend this CD - in fact Luiz had
given me a copy when he and Fernanda came over in November for the CRS
awards night, so I've had plenty of time to get into it!

The Prog Rock community coming together to help where we can!

ProgAID was set-up in the wake of the terrible earthquake and Tsunami
disaster that tragically struck on the 26th December 2004. The sheer
destruction and loss of human life was of a scale that shook the
world.

We considered what the Progressive Rock community could do, even in a
small way, to help alleviate some of the suffering endured, and help
towards the rebuilding of lives and communities.

We have therefore decided to co-ordinate the recording of a CD single
to help raise as much money as possible for those that need it. The
song, titled 'All Around The World', will be recorded on the 29th and
30th January 2005, and since the decision was made, we have been
overwhelmed by the generosity of so many great musicians who have
agreed to give their time to appear on the single. The list grows
daily and currently includes:

Neal Morse
Roine Stolt - The Flower Kings
Anthony Phillips
Martin Orford - IQ
Pete Nicholls - IQ
John Jowitt - IQ
Alan Reed - Pallas
Nick Barrett - Pendragon
Clive Nolan - Arena / Pendragon
Mick Pointer - Arena
John Mitchell - Arena / The Urbane
Gary Chandler - Jadis
Arjen Lucassen - Ayreon
Oliver Wakeman - Oliver Wakeman Band
Steve Balsamo - Alan Parsons Project
Troy Donockley - Iona
Bryan Josh - Mostly Autumn
Steve Gee - Landmarq
Tracy Hitchings - Landmarq
Dave Wagstaff - Landmarq
Bruce Soord - Pineapple Thief
Stu Nicholson - Galahad
Magenta
Steve Babb - Glass Hammer
Daniel Gildenlow - Pain Of Salvation
Mike Baker - Shadow Gallery
Gary Wehrkamp - Shadow Gallery
Doogie White - ex Rainbow / Yngwie Malmsteen
Rob Gould - Fula
Fiona Ford - Fula
Alain Chiarazzo - Eclat
Steve Taylor - Strangefish
Danny Chang - The Fyreworks
Andy Edwards - Ezra
Colin Edwards - Ezra
Chris Dale - Sack Trick / Bruce Dickinson
Paul Davies - ex Karnataka / Panic Room
Jonathan Edwards - ex Karnataka / Panic Room
Nic Waulker - Bluehorses
Liz Prendagast - Bluehorses

Once recorded, the single will go on sale, which is expected to be
late February 2005, and all proceeds will go to the charities that can
help the victims of the Tsunami disaster.

Regular updates, including the amount of money raised, will be posted
at the ProgAID web site at www.ProgAID.com, so please visit for the
latest news. The full list of musicians participating on the single
will also be listed within the "Who's Who" section of this site.

We thank you for supporting this release and please spread this news
to as many people as possible!

Best Regards

Hi everyone

I was at the Classic Rock Society awards ceremony in Rotherham on Saturday
night, and was delighted to see Ashtar win the Best New Band award for 2004. It
was really great to see Luiz and Fernanda, who had come over from Brazil again
(though they can't have known they would win at the time they planned this
visit).

Fernanda also won the rather less serious Best Page 3 award (this refers to the
CRS' bi-monthly magazine Rock Society).

They are currently working on a new album From The Otherside. They will also
be touring Britain again in May, including a slot at the Rotherham Rocks
festival
on May 7th.

Finally, a big thank-you to Alistair Flynn, whose fervent support has been a
really
big help to the band.

Hi everyone

Just a quick line to say there are some nice photos of Fernanda in the latest
issue
of "Rock Society", the bi-monthly journal of the UK Classic Rock Society.

The CRS do unstinting work to support classic rock bands in the UK, and were
responsible for organising Ashtar's appearance in Rotherham back in May. Well
worth joining if you are not already a member - see
<http://www.classicrocksociety.com/> for more details.

Sorry I haven't been more active over the last month or so, but I have been ill
with
jaundice and had to go to hospital for a minor operation. Hopefully I'm on the
mend now, though.

Keep shining
Adie

Hi everyone

Just to say I've now added a page of Ashtar links to my site at < www.roscalen.com/ashtar/index.htm >.  Hopefully this'll be useful for people to find their way to the various other pages that are around.

Hi Jose, we can't get onto the web site, there seems to be a problem with
the server. I have 3 pictures from their Oakwood gig at
http://alsimages.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/ I look forward to seeing the
folder you've created soon.

Hi Adie, Luiz & Fernanda were back here last week to see Peter Gabriel in Sheffield and said they enjoyed their French gigs but attendances were quite low. They were hoping to get a support gig in Austria but that fell through. The good news is Luiz & Frenanda are planning to come to the CRS BOTY awards night on 27th November, they really enjoyed playing at the CRS. We'll have to see if we can get together to get them more gigs here when they come back next May. Their off back to Brazil on Thursday but can't wait to get back here.

Hi everyone

At last I've managed to get the Rotherham photos up, they're at

It was a really fabulous gig.  My life seems to have got stuck on fast forward from then until now, but I enjoyed that night tremendously. It was so great the way the band put the disparate moods and feelings over.

There's also a page of Karnataka photos from later that evening, there's a link at the bottom of the Ashtar photo page for any interested.  Fantastic to see the two bands together when they're currently my numbers one and two favourites! A night I will always remember.

Anyone heard how the French festivals went?

Not sure which page you mean, it isn't me that runs the Ashtar site but I'd
imagine
they'll appreciate decent photos. I am also planning to take some myself anyway
and if I get some decent ones I'll probably do a photo page on my site cf the
ones
I've done for other bands.

No, though Karnataka are also playing Rock City here that night and I am
currently planning to go to that one.

Yes, let's hope that when some more people have heard them play live it leads to
more and better opportunities.

Anyway, I'm *really* looking forward to Rotherham now.

Hi Chris, good to hear from you. We're really looking forward to meeting Luiz and the band, I love Urantia it was one of those albums that seems to have some magic through it, really great. I just wish I could have got them on tour with a Karnataka or Mostly Autumn, may be they can sort something for the future.

Hi Adrian, the page looks good I'll take some pictures when they get here for you to use. Did you know they are playing in Sheffield on the 16th May at the Classic Rock Bar on Eccelsall Road? I'm going there tomorrow to see the manager and sort a few things out like what equipment the have there and what time Ashtar can play. Luiz seemed quite pleased when I told him there will be some free beer for them!

Cheers, Alistair

Hi Jose

>This is group's first message.

Welcome aboard!

>I have Ashtar's album and like it.

Which are your favourite tracks? I am currently having difficulty in deciding
this,
because I mainly play it in the car so obviously I can't be looking at the
sleeve
notes while driving. When I first started playing it the title track was the
first to
grab me, but now I find I like several others too. Guess I'll have to give it a
'proper' listen on a hi-fi sometime!
