Will Dooley is a local bluegrass musician and the lead vocalist and guitarist in his band, Dooley’s Blue Revue. When Strutting Duck owner Neal Kelly heard of the accident he decided to hold a benefit to help with the medical bills. Kelly explained that both Dooley and Reed are out of the hospital but are still recovering from the incident. He said that there are still a considerable amount of medical expenses that are ongoing that were not covered by insurance.
Despite the result of the car accident, Kelly believes this benefit could help significantly if people in the community come out and show their support.
Kelly said they would like to raise at least a couple thousand for them, but raising $7,000 would get them close to where they need to be.
“Realistically, we probably will not be able to raise enough money to take care of everything,” Kelly said. “We’re just trying to help them out a little bit.”
Not only is Kelly and the people of The Strutting Ducking lending a helping hand, but others have volunteered to contribute to the effort.
Rob and Jeanie Burt from Mobile Home Service Center have agreed to donate food for the event.
“We’re going to cook it (the food) here at the Duck,” Kelly said. “It’s going to be barbeque pulled pork sandwiches, and the proceeds from that will also go (toward the benefit).”
Various bands, including Dooley will perform at the event.
“We may have to prop him up on a stool because he’s on crutches right now,” Kelly said.
Kelly added that Budweiser is also donating beer, and the proceeds from that will also be put towards the benefit.
The Will Dooley and Jenny Reed Benefit will be held on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31 at 6 p.m.
Saturday will feature three bluegrass style bands, not including Dooley’s band. The Tatum Brothers will be kicking off the event at 6 p.m., followed by Corduroy Road of Athens Ga., and Bibb City Ramblers of the Phenix City/Columbus Ga., area.
Sunday will be more like a jam with a country and rock music feel. Artists include Wayne Mills, Tony Brook, Jaime Lyn Barber, Derek Findley, Last Episode, Mace Glascock and more.
Kelly said Sunday will include a lot of unique situations in which people who would normally not play together may do some collaborations.
He said some of the bands are driving into town specifically to support this event.
“It’s a substantial investment and effort and time for them, as well as money,” Kelly said. “They’re coming over to help out, which shows how great the bluegrass community is. I think it is an indication on what type of people they are.”
For the benefit, a minimum $12 is the recommended donation at the door, but other charitable contributions are welcomed.
