Sanders, I put out the call for shreds and boy, did we

An "ethereal" 10 second clip of a woman singing a French folk song has
been played for the first time in 150 years.
The recording of "Au Clair de la Lune", recorded in 1860, is thought
to be the oldest known recorded human voice.
A phonograph of Thomas Edison singing a children's song in 1877 was
previously thought to be the oldest record.
The new "phonautograph", created by etching soot-covered paper, has
now been played by US scientists using a "virtual stylus" to read the
lines.
"When I first heard the recording as you hear it ... it was magical,
so ethereal," audio historian David Giovannoni, who found the
recording, told AP.
"The fact is it's recorded in smoke. The voice is coming out from
behind this screen of aural smoke."
Sheet music
The short song was captured on April 9, 1860 by a phonautograph, a
device created by a Parisian inventor, Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville.
The device etched representations of sound waves into paper covered in
soot from a burning oil lamp.
Lines were scratched into the soot by a needle moved by a diaphragm
that responded to sound. The recordings were never intended to be played.
It was retrieved from Paris by Mr Giovanni, working with First Sounds,
a group of audio historians, recording engineers and sound archivists
who aim to make mankind's earliest sound recordings available to all.
To retrieve the sounds scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory (LBNL) in California made very high-resolution digital
scans of the paper and used a "virtual stylus" to read the scrawls.
However, because the phonautograph recordings were made using a
hand-cranked device, the speed varied throughout, changing the pitch.
"If someone's singing at middle C and the crank speeds up and slows
down, the waves change shape and are shifting, Earl Cornell, a
scientist at LBNL, told AP.
"We had a tuning fork side by side with the recording, so you can
correct the sound and speed variations."
Previously, the oldest known recorded voice was thought to be Thomas
Edison's recording of Mary had a little lamb. The inventor of the
light bulb recorded the stanza to test another of his inventions - the
phonograph - in 1877.
"It doesn't take anything away from Thomas Edison, in my opinion," Mr
Giovannoni told Reuters.
"But actually, the truth is he was the first person to have recorded
[sound] and played it back."
The new recording will be presented on 28 March at a conference of the
Association for Recorded Sound Collections at Stanford University in
California.

Internet Radio in the United States dodged a very narrow bullet yesterday when
SoundExchange, the thuggish lobbying arm if the Recording Industry Association
of America, backed off on demands which would have virtually silenced this
exciting and original kind of Radio due to the imposition of a fee schedule
which was roundly, and rightly, criticized as excessive and unfair.
While negotiations continue towards a resolution of the royalties issue,
Internet Radio can at best heave a temporary sigh of reprive rather than one of
resolution. What is important to remember is that SoundExchange has attempted
to muscle its excessive demands to the Copyright Royalty Board before, with
similar results: backing down at the eleventh hour due to pressure and
overwhelming public outcry.
It is also important to remember that SoundExchange and the RIAA have neither
honor nor integrity. It has been amply demonstrated that musicians themselves,
the supposed focal point of equitable distribution of royalties, have been
shafted repeatedly, and that far too much of the money which has been collected
in settlement shakedowns of song downloaders (some of whom never downloaded
anything at all), and from broadcasters, never makes its way to musicians, but
instead remains in the fat pockets of industry fatcats who wouldn't know music
if a tuba hit them on the head.
On the other hand...
Tubas make music. These and other instruments are heard each Saturday without
fail on your Luxuriamusic.com -branded SPACE PATROL.

Building a website is a piece of cake. Yahoo! Small Business gives you all the
tools to get online.
http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/webhosting
Announcing a special online performance by Lee Rosevere, scheduled for
July 16, 2007 at 9:30pm EST.
The performance will be an exclusive live internet event, where Lee
will perform new original material from his home studio and stream it
to the Silophone.
The Silo #5 is an abandoned grain storage facility in the port of
Montréal. From the website:
"Silophone makes use of the incredible acoustics of Silo #5 by
introducing sounds, collected from around the world using various
communication technologies, into a physical space to create an
instrument which blurs the boundaries between music, architecture and
net art. Sounds arrive inside Silo #5 by telephone or internet. They
are then broadcast into the vast concrete grain storage chambers
inside the Silo. They are transformed, reverberated, and coloured by
the remarkable acoustics of the structure, yielding a stunningly
beautiful echo. This sound is captured by microphones and rebroadcast
back to its sender, to other listeners and to a sound installation
outside the building. Anyone may contribute material of their own,
filling the instrument with increasingly varied sounds."
Musicians have created pieces for the Silo in the past, but in this
event, an exciting element that makes this even more unique is the
fact that anyone who is at the Silophone website can contribute to the
concert, either by playing recorded content provided by the websites
users, or by phoning or uploading individual sounds. These sounds
will be heard simultaneously with Lee's performance, making it a truly
unique performance. The performance should last 35-40 minutes.
The results of the show will be recorded and released via archive.org.
We encourage you to log on to Silophone at 9:30pm EST on July 16,
2007 for this event and we also encourage anyone to participate in the
performance. (Real audio required to listen, Flash required to
participate).
To call the Silophone from North America: 1.514.844.5555
From the rest of the world: 001.514.844.5555
Wait until the second ring, then start talking.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The Sound of Failure is an audio event sponsored by Don't Look
Experimental New Media Gallery of Dulwich Hill (Sydney, Australia) to
explore the concept of `failure' in a post-digital era. In this era
sound artists must look beyond the digital facade (the `graphics user
interface' and the like) to represent the times in which we live
(times that are politically and socially, themselves, littered with
failures).
In the '90s, digital technologies like the CD player made the `Glitch'
aesthetic possible, which, according to Kim Cascone `was developed in
part as a result of the immersive experience of working in
environments suffused with digital technology: computer fans whirring,
laser printers churning out documents, the sonification of
user-interfaces, and the muffled noise of hard drives. But more
specifically, it is from the "failure" of digital technology that this
new work has emerged'.
But what, in this era of `Failure', is possible beyond the glitch? How
do we exploit the possibilities beyond the digital façade without just
reverting back to the seemingly primitive world of the analogue?
We are now seeking submissions from musicians who attempt to address
this question in their works. To read the full brief, and to submit a
proposal, please go to http://soundoffailure.com
The Sound of Failure will be held at the Petersham Bowling Club on
August 25. For more information about Don't Look Gallery please go to
