as i;ve heard.

A friend of mine lent me a bunch of Coil CDs. Apparently they were/are big
magma fans and so he became greatly curious about vander and co.
Coil, for those unfamiliar with them are a eclectic duo who;ve been making
various odd albums for 20 years or so (somewhere in industrial/experimental).
Big cult following and occult interest. Funny that the flagship band of this
list is a big influence on them, when most their fans would be ignorant of the
history of zheul.

Also, I have a mp3 of the one side of the tape of This Heat mentioned, and I
thought it was rather good - improvised, but well done. Definitely musicians
that know what they are doing. It has slighty spooky "old tape deck in some
weird old
house somewhere" vibe.

Didn;t fripp have some guitar school or something? (in the states?)

I dipped through a book about it once, someone who went there.

I believe Fripp has lived in the U.S. for extended periods on two
occasions: 1) in the late 70's/early 80's he lived in New York City
and produced several albums (his own, Peter Gabriel, Darryl Hall,
The Roches, played with Blondie etc.) and reformed King Crimson
(i believe Fripp and Adrian Belew met at a David Bowie show in NYC);
2) the above mentioned guitar school in West Virginia in the late 80's.

I'm pretty sure his first time in the states was the first King
Crimson tour there (late 69 or early 70?).

The book about Robert Fripp, in which the author joins Fripp's Guitar
School and has various strange encounters, is by Eric Tamm. The book
is called either "King Crimson" or "Robert Fripp", I can't remember,
as I've lent it to someone...

Eric Tamm set off to write a book (for a college thesis ?) about
Fripp; and rang Fripp up to tell him. Fripp forbade Tamm to write
the book (!!) and told him to write a book about Eno instead, which
he did ("Eno and the Vertical Color of Sound"; very interesting).

However, sometime later, Tamm decided to write about Fripp anyway. He
contacted Fripp again, who told him to join his guitar course.

The book describes a rather strange control freak. Everyone had to
play exactly like Fripp. He told them not to allow their thumbs to
curl round the neck of the guitar. Someone pointed out that Hendrix
did that, and Fripp said that Hendrix would have been a better player
if Fripp had taught him...

The book is well worth reading, as is "In The Court of King Crimson"
by Sid Smith.

A while ago, I did some recording at Peter Gabriel's Real World
Studios. They told us there that Robert Fripp sends letters to the
studio before he arrives, saying that on no account must anyone talk
to him whilst he's there, less they disturb his concentration.

Hmmm.....

Cheers,
Colin

That's an interesting spin on it, but not correct. First off, the one
thing that's emphasized over and over again on a Guitar Craft course is
that everything is optional (with the exception of use of illegal drugs
and alcohol).

Second off, a method is being taught. Yes that method includes a
certain positioning of the hands. Is it any different than a piano teacher
teaching a certain way of positioning one's hands, a golf teacher showing
how to hold the club, or any of scores of other teachers who are trying to
instill their methods in their students? No doubt that Fripp thinks his
way is the right way, but wouldn't you think that those who would seek him
out to study with him would have some kind of clue that if you study with
him, you're going to have to deal with that - or choose not to and call it
a day - just like with any other teacher.

I don't deny that Fripp has said and done things which people could
legitimately take issue with, but I never felt that he was a mean control
freak instructor. I had issues with certain things that we were doing and
some things that I chose not to do. He was very gracious and (something
people who only view him from his public persona don't realize) a
hysterically funny man to joke around with.

> Someone pointed out that Hendrix did that, and Fripp said that Hendrix

Bad spin again. The gist of it was that Fripp (who was influenced by and
in awe of Hendrix) believed that Hendrix could have excelled even further
as a player if he had worked on developing a more formalized technique.

It's certainly debatable whether that would have been good or bad for
Hendrix since a big part of Hendrix' thang was his full-body-everything-
including-the-kitchen-sink approach to the guitar, so I'm not sure we'd
all want to have heard a more disciplined Hendrix who could have played
significantly faster with less effort through using some of the techniques
used in GC.

Indeed. There's room in this world -- and the next one -- for many more
techniques than just Fripp's.

This is also the way I look at him.
I admire his ability to be logic and to the point. I find him both humorous
and emotional, but also so uncompromising, that he tactically/strategically
builds unnessecary walls between him and others. His 'mental allergy' towards
bootleggers and vulturelike fans, has a core I easily understand, but I fear
he puts so much energy into this, that it influences his creativity and the
quality of his life.
His musical achievements are unquestionable, he is a unique guitarist,
unsurpassed in his particular style / field both technically and musically.
And he have inspired many (incl. Mike Johnson). He is a master of structure,
but sometimes I get too loaded with structure, and just loves to put on 'Band
of Gypsys', 'Cream Goodbye', or something else that more or less just happened
in the moment...His musical approach is certainly not the only valid one, and
he knows, why else would he choose Adrian Belew to be his guitarcounterpart.
His 'structurism' could perhaps partly be a reaction to the touring with the
73-74 version of KC, which was not very structured music, in away more like
jazz - but the core has always bee there.
And I think most people can learn someting from his aphorisms, they are so
obvious but well put - logic delight.
"There are few things as convincing as death to remind us of the quality with
which we live our life".
A few more can be read here:

site.

Adam,

I agree with the points you make - I am only quoting (from memory)
from Eric Tamm's book, and I think the second section of the book
(dealing with Guitar Craft) sets out to be somewhat confrontational.

I am not knocking Fripp, he has always been my favourite guitarist,
since seeing him on the King Crimson "Islands" tour in 1971 (my
first-ever gig).

I always found it was hendrix's rythymn/lead hybrid technique which was such a
strong part of his style - little wing an obvious example but some of the live
fuzz intro's to Killing Floor or the voodoo chile return song, very hard to
play well.

The tritone intro to purple stands like a black-hole singulairty of creeping
intensity as well. Any novice guitar/bassist can play it ... i wasn;t even
born at the time but when
"brrrmp ....braapp....brrrmmp.....braaaap" first came over the radio in 67 it
must have been like the aliens had landed!
Forget scales and fret wanking, those two notes permanently altered the psyche
of thousands of people
(maybe ;-)

You can't teach that at school, though I doubt Fripp is attempting too.

Also ,there are some good hearted control freaks in the world btw. ;-)

French guitarist, electronic musician, and composer Richard Pinhas is
internationally recognized as one of France's major experimental
musicians: the 'father' of French electronic music. He was the founder of
Heldon, a band whose violent fusion of electronics and guitar in the 1970s
rivaled the German electronic school and was a precursor to today's
industrial music. As a guitar player, his sound has been compared that of
guitar icon Robert Fripp.

Over the past decade, working solo and with other artists such as Pascal
Comelade and Maurice Dantec (for Schizotrope), Pinhas has been developing a
system of electronic processing to use in performing live solo guitar
concerts.

Pinhas will perform in Baltimore, Maryland on October 26th at Orion
Studios as part of the ongoing Baltimore Progressive Rock Showcase Series
Fall 2002 schedule. Performing on guitar and accompanied by French
electronic musician Jérôme Schmidt, Pinhas will play music from hisew
instrumental release on Cuneiform, *Event and Repetitions*, and possibly
some new pieces that fuse electronics, sampling and guitar and incorporate
spoken-word from writings by Phil K. Dick, William Burroughs, Hunter S.
Thompson, and others.

*Event and Repetitions* marks a progression in Pinhas' ongoing experiments
with sound. Created using only guitar and processing systems and recorded
live, it is an arresting sensory assault, a river of sound that is rich in
depth, detail and texture. Pinhas has released approximately 20 solo and
Heldon CDs, many of released by or reissued on Cuneiform; this newest may
be his best solo guitar work to date.

Has anyone heard it yet? Does it sound like Magma, Offering or is it
something new? I'd also like to know which musicians play on it
(hopefully the One Shot lineup is present).

I haven't heard the CD yet but have heard some live versions played by
Offering in 90's.
You'll hear totally new thing!!
In the CD, I suppose, most of its parts are played by Christian Vander alone
with a little help from Stella, etc.

I haven't heard it...apparently no samples on the 7th Records site, either...but
the description implies something quite unlike Magma (emphasis is mine):

Fifteen years in composition (1982 - 1997) and more than four years in the
making, this music is something entirely new, bridging the compositional efforts
of the 20th Century _post_ _Schoenbergian_ _greats_ to create a 21st Century
music which grasps the essence of the vast interior stillness behind all sound
and pierces the intensity of silence behind all noise.

_Disavowing_ _all_ _mechanical_ _tempos_, this free-flowing masterpiece reveals
itself through the formless form of vortices and spirals, cascading, recursive,
ineffable.

This is a music whose dynamic rests on no tangible axis or fixed point, which is
conceived from the inner and cannot therefore be measured by the outer. 65
minutes of fluttering wings, of song, of cries, of absolutely different
sensations, this is a _neo-impressionist_ composition of revolutionary
proportions and aspirations.

"I have found in the motion of swans and crows a parallel with the inner motion
of the Kosmos itself. Or, at least, this is what I perceive in it."

Christian Vander,
6th March 2002

And just the other day they were reporting difficulties with the
packaging! Anyway, here's hoping Seventh ships quickly.

I don't know. The description has me "weirded out" a bit. Sounds
like a Frippian soundscape:

"Disavowing all mechanical tempos, this free-flowing masterpiece

There's a bootleg of Offering playing some of this (or an early
version of it) from 1989. Has anyone heard it? From the
description, it actually makes me think it will a weird combo of free
jazz and Debussy.

Well, I'm going to buy it anyway, but if anyone has a one or two
minute snippet of that, I'd love to hear it.

Didn't sound Frippish to me...I imagined something closer to Morton Feldman/Eric
Satie/Claude Debussy!

man, that new reichel release is pretty spectactular, especially if "martian
grunting doo-wop" sounds interesting to you. the pieces seem more accessible
than the first dax operetta disk, "shanghaied", but still completely
other-worldly. definitely going to be on my "best of" list this year.

Yeah,

I am not joking here :)

In 1974 a young group by the name of "Cosmic Dream" started
their way as a Tangerine Dream like combo in Tel-Aviv.
After a while they started to perform their famous track:
"A Journey to the center of the Brain" which was ranging
from 40-70 minutes live and some other pieces, all above
30 minutes.

The band main core was the keyboardists: one musician was using
Mellotrons/Hammond/Electric piano , the second used Korgs
and synths and the third was playing on mini moogs and sound
generators only as background noise maker :).
On guitar was playing Berry Sacharov who is a very famous guitarist
in Israel who played with Minimal Comact and in the famous due Fortis
& Sacharov. Other instruments were the Bass and the drums.
Some times they used E.Violin.

Whats the connection to Alphataurus? well, they sound very much like
the Italian Alphataurus and they are really a GREAT BAND which in
a way the luck didn't work for. They didn't got to record any of
their pieces in a studio in the 70's but the main keyboardist and
brain of the band Adar Shechter, made few recordings live and in
studio during the 80's only this time Haim Romano from the
Churchill's played the guitars.

There is another amazing thing about this band: Adar Shechter invited
VDGG memebers to play with him in the studio when they perform in
Israel in early 80's and they made an unreleased album of Adar's
compositions with VDGG members.

May be soon MIO Records will do somthing to discover this lost and
RARE band with a reissue.
