Talk about nostalgia...In the mid-50's, when I left Hew York and Metronome, my
first real newspaper job was film reviewer for the Philadelphia News, doubling
in the theater section when things got busy there. My first assignment came when
"The Music Man" opened: our regular man interviewed Robert Preston, while I was
handed the ingenue, Barbara Cook. (Just as, a couple of weeks later, when "Two
for the Seesaw" came in, he took Bancroft, while I was stuck with Fonda.) All I
can remember of the Cook interview was that I was surprised that she brought her
own water (Philadelphia's being undrinkable, unbeknownst to me, who never
touched it) but my colleagues took that for granted. Alec Wilder was not
mentioned; Judy Garland wasn't either.
Apologies....
