Speaking of New York cabaret performances (ref: recent post about
Barbara Cook)...
On Thursday evening, April 2, while in New York for the annual AW concert), we
went to Birdland to hear the cabaret/jazz/theater singer Jessica Molaskey
accompanied by husband John Pizzarelli and his quintet. They performed, with
attribution to Alec Wilder, a number he wrote with Eddie Sauter for the Benny
Goodman orchestra, "All The Cats Join In." It was the first time I've heard
anyone perform it live, or know of any recent recordings. The original BG
recording can be found on the AW compilation disc from the Smithsonian American
Songbook series. A version by the Roy Eldridge orchestra (Buster Harding,
vocal) can be found on Rob Geller's stupendous Web compilation
wilderworld.podomatic.com. I understand Peggy Lee recorded it as well in the
late '40s. It's too swing-era a number for most contemporary jazz players, I
suppose, but JM and JP, who like to ressurect old chestnuts, swung it
beautifully.
