CHANT CAMP - NOVEMBER 14
San Francisco Renaissance Voices is delighted to once again host Susan Hellauer
and Marsha Genensky of Anonymous 4 for another full-day session of Chant Camp,
this time featuring Medieval Sarum Chant.
This workshop presents a full day session of chant singing, structured around a
number of carefully-chosen plainchant topics. The Rite or Use of Sarum (the
Latin name for Salisbury) was the Britain's own variation of the Roman liturgy
throughout the Middle Ages until the Reformation. While many Sarum chants were
also sung elsewhere in Christian Europe, Sarum Chant is a distinct and
distinctive dialect, and includes many compositions unique to the British Isles.
You'll learn and sing several of these compositions from votive masses to the
Virgin Mary. When fans ask members of Anonymous 4 why we sing so many works in
honor of Mary, we tell them: "because she got the best music!"
Each topic presentation will begin with a brief, informative, illustrated
lecture, followed by plenty of group singing, to illustrate and permanently
“set” the lesson. The day’s workshop ends with a communal chant singing,
combining elements of the day’s work, along with extensions and improvisations
based on the day’s material.
This session contains all new material, so if you attended the April 2009 Camp
you will still find something new to chant about! Pre-registration is required
and class size is limited so early registration is recommended. Registration
cost includes workshop, all materials and hospitality. Register at:
