start singing again!

I'm living in Sonoma County (North Bay) but I would travel if there
are no groups up this way!

ps: I was living in Tallahassee & sang with the Tallahassee Community
A Capella Choir, a group that formed out of a workshop w/Urban Bush
Women about 6 years ago to sing traditional & liberation music.

Hi Paula:

East Bay Harmony is an acappella chorus that meets every Monday evening in
Oakland. We are part of the Urban Harmony Movement, an outreach program of
CASA (Contemporary Acappella Society of America). CASA was founded in 1990 to
foster and promote a cappella music, inviting all members of the community to
join together and spread "harmony through harmony".

We sing a wide variety of music arranged in four-part harmony, including
doo-wop, pop, traditional & ethnic songs. No audition is required, and you
don't need previous singing experience (although you clearly have it). We
get together for the joy of singing together and the satisfaction of
increasing our musical knowledge and skills. We do occasional community
performances in the East Bay. No fees are required to join the chorus but
donations are gladly accepted.

We meet at the First Congregational Church, 2501 Harrison (at 27th St.)
Oakland, every Monday from 7:00-9:00.

If you'd like more information, or to let us know you'll be coming, or to get
directions,
you can contact:

Mark Bernfield, music director (510) 251-1137 e-mail: mbern@...
Marlene McCall, secretary (510) 649-1295 e-mail cos-berk@...

Hope you can join us, or that you find some other opportunity that will allow
you to keep singing!

Marlene

I'd also like to take this opportunity to mention that CASA also has two
strong Urban Harmony programs, one in Marin County (San Rafael) and one in
Los Altos (South Bay). You can find out more about them at

I'm aware of that provision, but did the following provision not
apply?

http://www.spebsqsa.org/web/groups/public/documents/native/cb_00061.pdf

CONTEST AND JUDGING HANDBOOK

"4.a. To be eligible to compete with a given chapter as a
transfer or dual (including reinstated dual) member, a
member must have established his transfer or dual
membership status in the chapter prior to the
commencement of the contest cycle in the district. This
eligibility requirement will not apply to a member who,
after the commencement of the contest cycle, changes his <==
place of residence and solely as a consequence of such <==
change, transfers his membership to the chapter with <==
whose chorus he thereafter competes. A membership
transfer or dual membership will be established upon
receipt, at the Society office, of the necessary request for
transfer or dual membership, and all necessary approvals
thereof."

Did the young man who moved from San Jose to Westminster not
actually move? Or did he move and forget to fill out a dual
membership or membership transfer form and have the chapter
mail it in? or did he fill it out for "dual" instead of
"transfer"? or did he just go away to school in Southern
California and since he didn't change his "legal residence"
from Northern California he didn't actually "move"? Yecch.

Sacramento-based, Urban Acappella band Three 5 and 6 is on a mad hunt
for a bass vocalist. We are a mixed-race, all male vocal band that
performs all original music and has a strong R&B and Hip Hop feel.
The type of bass that we desire would have a strong sense of rhythm
and a deep and funky "electric bass" sound. We try to imitate the
full depth of the sounds of an R&B, funk band as opposed to the
traditional "blended, one-voice" Acappella sound.

If this sounds like something you could be passionate about, please
contact us immediately for further information.

Hi Ted:

You didn't mention your geographic location, which might be sort of important in
terms of the most desirable group...

I sing with East Bay Harmony, an acappella chorus that meets every Monday
evening in Oakland. We are part of the Urban Harmony Movement, an
outreach program of CASA (Contemporary Acappella Society of America).
As some of you may already know, CASA was founded in 1990 to foster
and promote a cappella music, inviting all members of the community to
join together and spread "harmony through harmony".

We sing a wide variety of music arranged in four-part harmony,
including doo-wop, pop, jazz, traditional & ethnic songs. No audition is
required, and you don't need previous singing experience. We get
together for the joy of singing together and the satisfaction of
increasing our musical knowledge and skills. We do occasional
community performances in the East Bay. No fees are required to join
the chorus but donations are gladly accepted.

We meet at the First Congregational Church, 2501 Harrison (at 27th
St.) Oakland, every Monday from 7:00-9:00. It's not necessary that you let us
know you're coming, but it's helpful if you can. (We produce practice
CDs for you to take home, so it helps to know when a new person is coming.)

If you'd like more information (or directions), or to let us know you'll be
coming, you can contact:

Dear fellow Bay Area a cappella enthusiasts:

This is a reminder that three of the Bay Area's best female
a cappella groups will be sharing the bill at this year's
annual A Cappella Showcase event at Villa Montalvo, on
Thursday, November 14.

We are *privately* calling this year's show, "Wine, Women and Song!"

Details, from Montalvo's Web site <villamontalvo.org>:

A Cappella Showcase with Kitka, Dilemma & Razzcals

Nov. 14, 2002, 7:30pm Carriage House Theatre

This combination of three fabulous women's ensembles promise a truly
memorable evening. Kitka utilizes the stunning dissonance, asymmetric
rhythm, intricate ornamentation, lush harmony, and resonant strength of
Eastern European women's vocal traditions. Dilemma combines rock, gritty
blues, and R & B with commanding vocal percussion and an impressive bass
line to break down the boundaries of a cappella. And Razzcals is a high-
energy quartet at home with everything from barbershop classics to pop and
show tunes. $27/32.

Hope to see you there!

Join BOHiCA for their spooky Halloween concert at 7 PM on Friday, October

We need to be out of the space by 8:45, so the concert will start on time.
Be sure to leave time to park!

Spanganga is located at 3376 19th Street near the corner of 19th and
Mission. It is located in the truly nifty mission district of San Francisco,
which has all sorts of great places to eat, drink, and be merry. Sadly, no
food or drink (other than water) is permitted inside of Spanganga (let's
hear it for SF zoning laws!). For more info, spang over to
www.spanganga.org.

Admission is $5 or a beating human heart.

Immediately following our concert will be an Improv comedy show with Group 6
and The Babcocks. Admission to that show is separate from ours. Go look at

other upcoming Spanganga performances.

Hope to see you there!

Seeking harmony goddess!

for Making Waves, a personal-political original women's vocal
ensemble (mostly acappella though we're open to branching out if you
play an instrument). Based in Berkeley, CA.

Do you love to sing, rehearse, and perform with other women? Can you
blend in intricate harmony, then jump into vocal percussion or an
improvisational lead? Does your voice express your heart, your
passion, and your convictions? Can you commit to a weekly rehearsal
and regular performances, maybe an occasional tour (a week or two per
year)? We sing mostly-original songs -- both songwriters & non-
songwriters welcome. Reading music is not important, but a good ear
for creating and singing harmony is. Especially seeking contralto,
percussion (vocal and/or hand-drum), or multi-range. Be part of a
sweet, soulful, & rockin' blend of voices to express & inspire
personal and social change!

Making Waves: Singing out truth in three-part harmony
www.rosestreetmusic.com/makingwaves
First organized around an original song in support of community radio
station KPFA's struggle, this women's vocal ensemble continued, in a
variety of incarnations, to inspire audiences through it's powerful
lyrics and intricate harmonies. Based in the East Bay, MW has
performed locally and toured the West Coast. We're a trio & sing
original songs about personal and political empowerment, performing
at venues ranging from lgbt pride and women's festivals to folk clubs
to colleges to house concerts to hot springs resorts.

"Deliciously playful lyrics that bite back! . . . sweet melodies and
provocative lyrics"
-Helen Walsh, Art Juju Producer

"I feel as though I am hearing the voice of our ancestors. Deep,
inspired, & passionate... richly textured arrangements make the songs
both urgent & enduring" -Andrea Pritchett of Rebecca Riots

Libana, New England's international touring world music ensemble, opens
windows into diverse, rarely heard songs, dances and instrumental music
from
around the world, especially those handed down through women's oral
traditions. Their music takes you on a journey through the
Mediterranean,
the Balkans, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and South America and
ranges
from exquisite a cappella Balkan harmonies to frenzied Egyptian drumming
and
ritual dancing and the rhythms of Africa. They are also world renowned
for
their magnificent collection of contemplative chants and rounds.

Libana performs with an array of instruments including: oud, hammered
dulcimer, clarinet, accordian, doumbek, riqq, and bombo. Ensemble
members
introduce each song within its cultural context, and audiences are
invited
to participate, making unfamiliar music come to life for each person.
Libana
performances go straight to the heart, inspiring audiences with wonder
and
appreciation of the commonality of our global community.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Based in Boston, Libana takes its name from a 10th century Moorish poet
and
musician, a symbol of women's creativity throughout time.

"The group's rich vocal harmonies, instrumental textures, and
arrangements
of traditional and more original world music are breathtaking." -- Sing
Out
Magazine

"...the audience kept asking for more, shouting bravo and rising to
their
feet..." -- le Journal de Quebec

"...a magical experience..." -- Arts Boston

"Libana's music is robust and gorgeous...music with immediate impact."
--Boston Rock

"Their music makes you high. It swells the spirit as they swing into
harmonies never encountered in American music." -- Cape Cod Times

************************************

Libana has been researching, performing and celebrating women's world
music
for 24 years! Their recordings include:

"Night Passage" (Spinning Records, SR003), 2000. Chants and rounds
illuminating the mystery of life's seasons. Available with a companion
songbook.

"Borderland" (Shanachie Records, 67003), 1993. Vocal and instrumental
music
from Finland, Bulgaria, Argentina, Egypt, Lebanon, Yugoslav Macedonia
and
more.

"Fire Within" (Ladyslipper Records, LR108), 1990. Rounds, chants and
songs
united by reverence and respect for the Earth's sensual beauty and power
and
an inner conviction and determined vision towards individual and
planetary
peace.

"Sojourns" (Shanachie Records, 67001), 1989. Won rave reviews from the
Washington Post and Boston Globe...a lively collection of music from
Algeria, Bulgaria, Israel, Greece, Bolivia, Transylvania and Yugoslav
Macedonia.

"A Circle is Cast" (Spinning Records, SR002), 1986. Libana's most
popular
seller is a collection of rounds, chants and songs for celebration and
ritual that has been featured on "All Things Considered" of National
Public
Radio. One song was used as the theme song for an NBC documentary
"America's
Children: Poorest in a Land of Plenty", narrated by Maya Angelou. Used
widely by music educators throughout the U.S. Companion songbook also
available.

"Handed Down" (Spinning Records, SR001), 1985. Exciting and diverse
vocal
and instrumental music from Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Dear fellow vocal enthusiasts:

Ken Malucelli, from A Cappella Central and Prince/SF Productions
here.

As this group is of interest to a cappella fans and singers in
general, I am posting the following notice here, because some of
the singing in this show actually is a cappella.

I am currently seeking classically trained (read "opera/operetta")
singers to join Savoy Express, my Gilbert & Sullivan potpourri en-
semble, for some upcoming shows, to work as subs/alternate cast,
for this six-person group. For a quick overview:

http://www.PrinceSF.com/artists-cabaret-savoy.htm

Ideal candidates need to be great solo singers with a flair for
comedy, move well on stage (there is some choreo in the show),
and have some theatrical experience under their belts, to match
the overall backgrounds of the rest of the cast.

Specifically, I'm in need of a lead romantic tenor (Nanki-Poo,
Frederic, Alexis, Strephon, Tolloller, Richard) and a character
mezzo capable of playing older women (Katisha, Mad Margaret,
Lady Sangazure, Mrs. Partlett, etc).

I might also be needing 1 or 2 high sopranos (one sings Mabel, Rose,
Phyllis, Psyche, Tessa, Angelina; the other sings Patience, Aline,
Elsie, Gianetta, Josephine, Yum-Yum).

More specifically, I am in need of the tenor and mezzo (and maybe
a soprano) for a concert up near Tacoma, WA, on Sat Jan 25; and I
and in need of the tenor for a mini-tour in New York state, en-
compassing three concerts plus travel days, April 3-7.

All gigs are paid and will cover travel expenses, etc.

If you or anyone you know finds this of interest and is available,
please contact me *immediately!*

Thanks for your consideration.
