Dears, Two wonderful opportunities to sing this month. First, on the 14th, the
regular San Francisco Rounds Sing,( 2nd Monday) at 7 pm, All Saint's Episcopal
Church, 1350 Waller, between Ashbury and Masonic. In honor of Bastille Day,
we'll singing some rounds in French as well as new ones by Aileen Vance and Suzy
Scheunneman and Becky Reardon and me. The acoustics and the company are
delightful. Love to see you there.

AND returning to tradition, A Rounds Sing on Chicken Ranch Beach, Inverness on
July 19, Saturday night at 7 pm. I'll be featuring rounds from Kay Eskenazi's
new book "Pass It Around" and will be sharing the leadership with some
Threshold Choir members who are honing their songleading skills. It will be a
lovely night. Chicken Ranch Beach is 1 mile north of Inverness on Sir Francis
Drake Blvd. just as that road begins to wind westward (away from Tomales
Bay) towards the Ocean. For a map, go to www.mapquest.com, enter Sir Francis
Drake Blvd @ Pine Hill Drive, Inverness, CA 94937. Chicken Ranch Beach is JUST
north of that intersection...there is no sign for the beach, just ample parking
on the right of the road. Look for my grey VW Van. It is a short walk to the
beach, but unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.
Please bring layers of clothing, it can get deceptively chilly, situpons and
water.

Both events open to women of all singing experience. Sliding scale $10 -
$10,000

Hope to see you there. Love, Kate

Get enough sun? Maybe its time for a cool matinee? On Saturday,
July 5, Center Theater in Fremont ( http://www.centertheater-info.com
) is having a special screening of the movie "The Music Man". This
event is sponsored by the Center Theater Preservation Group and
spearheaded by volunteer Andrew MacRae. Admission is free, doors
open at 3:30. The show kicks off at 4 pm with a set of a cappella
singing by Smorgaschord ( http://smorgaschord.com ). A prize
giveaway, in part sponsored by Round Table Pizza, starts at 4:30.
The Music Man starts at 4:45.

The purpose of this event is to keep the conditional use permit on
the theater valid. An event must be held once every 6 months to keep
this permit valid. There are costs associated with this event and
the theater is requesting donations of those in attendance (passive
requests... no bucket will be passed!). Additionally, concession
sales will help offset costs.

For a fun, cool afternoon, plan on attending the Music Man at the
Center Theater!

Hello A Cappellians!

Just writing to let you know that THE KINSEY SICKS, America's Favorite
Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet, will be making a rare San Francisco appearance at
the
Herbst Theatre, 2 nights only -- Saturday, July 19 and Saturday, July 26 at 8
pm.

THE KINSEY SICKS are longtime San Francisco favorites, having launched their
career with a street performance at a Muni station almost ten years ago.
Since then THE KINSEY SICKS have toured extensively in the U.S. and
internationally, and had their own widely acclaimed Off-Broadway show at New
York’s
legendary Studio 54. That production garnered critical praise, including a
Drama Desk
Award nomination for Best Lyrics, and multiple Lucille Lortel Award
nominations, including for Best Off-Broadway Musical of 2001.

Combining award-winning a cappella singing, wicked satire and over-the-top
drag, THE KINSEY SICKS have made a strong impression in the worlds of theater
and comedy. The Houston Chronicle called THE KINSEY SICKS’ lyrics "clever
enough
for Ira Gershwin or E.Y. Harburg." The Advocate called THE KINSEY SICKS
"gut-wrenchingly funny" and the New York Times praised their "voices sweet as
birdsong." Billboard Magazine called THE KINSEY SICKS "one of the more uniquely
original (and thoroughly fun and entertaining) acts we have encountered in
years . . . this is one act that should not be missed."

Nonetheless, there remain unsuspecting members of both the public and the
media who have not yet experienced THE KINSEY SICKS in their full glory. For
this
reason, the girls have offered gentle, subliminal encouragement for the
still-hesitant by entitling their current show, "THE KINSEY SICKS: GET OFF YOUR
FAT
ASS AND SEE OUR SHOW!"

"FAT ASS" will be THE KINSEY SICKS’ first Bay Area appearance in 2003. It
will include a raft of brand new, gorgeous and appalling songs as well as a
selection of longstanding if inexplicable audience favorites. Tickets are
available through City Box Office, (415) 392-4400 and www.cityboxoffice.com.
For more
information about THE KINSEY SICKS, visit www.kinseysicks.com.

Join the Circle - Singing for Your Life Circlesinging Workshops, led
by members of SoVoSo and Rhiannon

Arts First Oakland, in collaboration with First Congregational Church
of Oakland, Shambhala Booksellers, and Taylor Memorial United
Methodist Church, invites you to a series of six monthly
Circlesinging workshops, beginning in July and culminating with a
return engagement of last year's popular New Year's Ritual Circlesong

"Singing For Your Life."

Circlesinging is a vocal improvisation technique in which a circle of
singers takes melodic and rhythmic cues (parts) from a skilled
leader, together creating songs unique to the moment. As the leader
cues out old parts and introduces new ones, the song continues and
changes without stopping, at times supporting individual solos,
always grounded in attentive listening. Participants are welcome at
any level of singing experience. Space is limited - advance
registration recommended.

The first workshop will be held on Wednesday July 16, 7-9 pm at First
Congregational Church, 2501 Harrison Street (at 27th) in Oakland.
Members of SoVoSo, the Oakland-based a cappella jazz and world music
sextet, will lead the first five workshops, which will be held in
several different East Bay locations. In this way, we will sing with
different spiritual and faith communities, and experience a rich
array of voices in our circle. The final workshop will return to
First Congregational Church on December 6, and will be led by
Rhiannon.

Auditions!

The Quartertones, a bay area high school a cappella group is seeking
either one or two new members in the fall. We're looking for other
high school students, either guys or gals, interested in singing in a
serious but low-pressure atmosphere. (especially tenors and altos,
but we'll strongly consider all our applicants) We meet twice a week
in San Carlos and try to perform every month or so. (another plus is
that singing in the group pays a meager salary)

We just returned from a week-long tour to Las Vegas and Southern Utah
and have lots of plans for the coming year. To find out more about
the group check out our website: www.quartertones.com (please note
that the site is a work in progress...all of our latest info hasn't
been posted.

If your interested in the upcoming auditions, please email us at:

Saturday evening, July 26, from 8:30 p.m. until about 10 p.m. Since variety is

Howdy, Andrew Chaikin here.

I'm giving some more vocal percussion classes
in Berkeley this Sunday and the next. The first
one is for complete beginners; then, if you
like what you learned, you can come back a
week later and go deeper.

The Beginner class is open-enrollment. The
Intermediate class will be limited to 10
students only.

Here's what to do:

- If you're interested in the Beginner class:
   contact the Jazzschool at 510-845-5373
   and sign up.

- If you're interested in the Intermediate class:
email me, and include your phone number so
we can set up a little phone audition. I want
to see how many slots are still open.

Even though the venue is called the Jazzschool,
I'll be covering all sorts of styles: rock,
hip-hop, funk, world, etc.

LEARN VOCAL PERCUSSION!

Drum with your mouth! You can become a
vocal percussionist in no time -- I'll teach
you how. Practicing vocal percussion is
good for singers, drummers, or anybody
who likes to make noise. No experience is
required, but be prepared to use your
voice in totally new ways. $30 for
Jazzschool students, $45 otherwise.

This class is open-enrollment; call the
Jazzschool (510-845-5373) to sign up.

Prerequisites: my Beginning VP class, and/or
a grasp of the basics, demonstrable via a

We'll have you doing multiple sounds at once,
advanced breath control, bass lines and VP,
etc.

I'm reproducing below a posting to Bay Area barbershoppers. This may
not be the show for you if you're not a barbershop aficionado,
because before you get to hear two of the best barbershop quartets in
the world you'll have to listen to 25 student quartets each sing one
song. The quality of the student quartets varies greatly from
international-caliber to basement-caliber. But if you can sit through
the mediocrity (or just come late) you will be in for a treat at the
end of the evening.

Howdy bay area a cappella fans!

You might have some of us open for the Bobs and for SoVoSo, you may have
seen us in the SF Harmony Sweepstakes, you might have caught a glimpse of us
singing around the south bay at local coffee shops and outdoor festivals,
and you may even have been lucky enough to see us win the ensemble category
of the San Francisco Cabaret competition at the Herbst Theater - and if
you've seen all that you are either a die hard One of Each junkie or married
to one of us.

For all the rest of you - now you can see One of Each for yourself.

*** One of Each is having a headline show down in San Jose. ***

"Where in San Jose?" you ask.

At the celebrated Espresso Garden Cafe - 814 S. Bascom Ave, San Jose
http://www.espresso-garden.com/ (Just 45 minutes south of San Fran!)

"When?" you reply

Saturday, August 16th at 8:00 pm.

Seriously - Espresso Garden has one of the best stages we've performed on in
a great intimate environment - perfect for a cappella. We're only charging
$10 to get in, and the place holds just over 100 people, so reservations are
a good idea. We'll be pulling out all the stops, doing almost every song we
know, and maybe even some we don't.

Hookslide (mostly) and MeasurexMeasure in concert
Wednesday, August 13th, 8pm
Freight and Salvage
1111 Addison St., Berkeley, CA

A Cappella fans do not want to miss this show. Come see MeasurexMeasure,
who have just released a new CD, and the vast majority of Hookslide in a
night of "A Cappella Smackdown" (catchy marketing title Paul thought
up).

Reasons to come see the show:

1. Measure x Measure hasn't been out to the West Coast in about 4 years.

2. Hookslide's Paul Anderson sang with mxm before he headed west in 1998.

3. Half of BoyzNiteOut will be performing with Hook-slide: Eugene Rocha
(vocal percussion) and John Moore (bass) will be filling in for Jon Pilat,
who will in turn be filling in for George Hoffman, who is on his honeymoon
in Mexico. He wil be mocked.

4. Mayank Thanawala will be opening the show doing the singer/songwriter
thing on solo guitar. Jon is thinking about asking him if he needs drums
on any of that.

5. Damon Tribble, Hookslide founder, will be joining Hookslide on stage
for a song or two.

6. There will be a couple of huge, everybody on stage free-for-alls.
Songs may result.

7. None of that Dream On nonsense since, well, George is in Mexico, Steven
Tyler is unavailable, and we haven't found anybody else who can do the
song justice.

8. Find out what Jon sounds like when he's singing like a normal person.
Jon is reportedly curious about this as well.

9. All stage banter will be in the third person.
