Steven,

A wonderful idea - I support you completely.

I'm responding to the whole group in an attempt to create a "yes and"
snowball effect.

The House Jacks have a public concert in Marin on Fri, Jan 21st
(Throckmorton Theater in Mill Valley), and a wedding performance on
Sat, Jan 22. Perhaps if you set the date at Sunday, Jan 23, we could be
a part (Garth will be in town from NY).

I agree with pulling something together quickly - the American
attention span is notoriously short.

I know that CASA is happy to lend resources to the performance: perhaps
some CDs to be raffled off, and an emailing sent to Bay Area members to
inform them of the effort.

As for a location, perhaps the folks in East Bay Harmony can help, as
they're located in the East Bay (imagine that!). There's a good chance
that a church would be willing to donate their space for such an
effort.

Keep the ideas and offers comin, folks.

Stephen, Deke, Steve Pearce, and everybody who's thinking about doing
a benefit show -----

A group of Easy Bay barbershop choruses and quartets *has already
booked* the 1,400-seat Chabot College Theater for a Tsunami benefit
Sunday Jan 23. I think that 2 shows are being contemplated, like 2pm
and 7 pm....but I am not in charge.

Speaking just for myself, I would be more likely to attend a show that
has a wider variety of acappella than just barbershop (which I do 2-3
nights a week anyways....)

There's a meeting tonight to organize a show, and it seems they can
use all the help they can get. Here is the only info I have....phil

The meeting will occur at the LaQuinta Inn and Suite Located on

Date: January 4, 2005

Time: 7:30pm

Please send at least one representative of your Chorus to this
meeting! I understand that everyone is extremely busy, but we need
your assistance in this worthy cause!

Folks,
I'm looking to mount an a cappella benefit concert for
Tsunami/Earthquake
relief. First things first, does anyone have an appropriate venue
that they
could make available for this? Location should be Oakland, Berkeley
or
maybe San Francisco and the date will be the second half of January
some
time. No point talking about groups until we have a place and a date
solidified, so I won't.

I participated in a similar benefit after 9/11, but it was all Klezmer
in
Berkeley. Great turn out then, and great feelings generated. Rasied
about
$5,000 on that one - all sent directly to disaster relief.

Let me know if you have a hall that would be good for this.

Sincerely,

Stephen Saxon (Clockwork, Piedmont Choirs, etc.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 7, 2005, Palo Alto, California

Cantabile Youth Singers continues their 11th season with a spirited
performance of their winter concert , "One Note at a Time”, at 7PM on
Saturday, January 22nd, at First United Methodist Church, 625 Hamilton in
Palo Alto.

The concert will feature the top three choirs of Cantabile Youth Singers
in a program that speaks to the healing powers of music. “One Note at a
Time” is an entrancing visit to the music and poetry of many cultures and
traditions spanning 4 centuries: from baroque and classical to gospel and
New Age; from the elegant songs of Henry Purcell to deeply emotional psalms
of the Sami people of Norway.

The highlight of the concert, Place of the Blessed, by American composer
Randal Thompson, is a rarely performed, beautiful and moving melodious
masterpiece. The work is performed by Cantabile’s senior chorus, the Chamber
Ensemble, and talented instrumentalists of the San Jose State University
Department of Music.

Don’t miss the opportunity to join us in this memorable musical event and to
share some magical moments with family and friends. Tickets are $12 general,
$6 students.

Under the artistic leadership of Elena Sharkova, Cantabile Youth Singers
performs as the children’s chorus for Opera San Jose, in concerts the San
Jose State University Chorale and will be performing at Carnegie Hall in
June 2005.
The chorus has four levels which rehearse weekly in Los Altos at Foothills
Congregational Church and welcomes new singers in September and January.

Dear Ken,

the information along to your singer network. I would reallly appreciate
it!

Thanks!

Dear singers and friends of singers:

I would like to invite you to participate in a class I am offering
specifically for singers this January. For years my voice students have
been telling me that I should teach a class in vocal health, with all the
advice I give them on the subject. I have finally designed such a class,
combining my personal experience with my training as a Reiki Master and Yoga
practitioner to create a unique east-meets-west approach to self-care for
singers. I hope you can attend!

Self-healing for Singers

The importance of health to a singer is vital and can mean the difference
between working and not working. Designed especially for singers, this
workshop will address vocal and physical health concerns as well as means of
coping with the stressful lifestyle this special career demands. Topics
will include:

- information about over-the-counter medicines every singer should know
- simple and inexpensive home treatments and remedies, including herbal teas
and supplements
- easy yoga postures and breathing techniques that optimize the body for
singing (great for before an audition or performance!)
- an introduction to the ancient healing art of Reiki, a powerful tool for
increasing energy and self-healing
Personal attention will be given to each participant, addressing individual
concerns. Learn how to keep yourself in top form whether at home or on the
road!

Date: January 22nd, 2005
Time: 10am-1pm
Location: 100 Clement St (at 2nd Ave) in San Francisco
Cost: $75

To sign up or for more information, please email me at

Subject: Update on Tsunami Benefit Concerts
stephen@...
Send Email Send Email

Folks,

An official press release will be forthcoming, and I'll forward that to
those on the ba-acapella email list when it's released, but I wanted to give
you a little update on our status.

Kevin Smith and I each started organizing independent benefit concerts in
response to the earthquake and tsunami. It didn't take long for us to find
each other and figure out that joining forces would be better than pursuing
separate projects. One of the strengths of the barbershop community (which
is where Kevin is based) is that they are VERY organized, and they think
BIG. You'll see how big when the official release comes out.

I just wanted to let folks know that Kevin and I are working closely
together (and there is an organizing committee that will have its second
meeting this week) to produce concerts under the title of "In Harmony With
Asia." There will be two concerts on January 23 at Hawyard's Chabot
College, and we're looking at a second date in February (possibly Saturday,
February 5) to do a similar concert in the Berkeley area.

Though the second date is still being evaluated, we are going full speed
ahead on the January 23rd concerts. There is absolutely no competition
between the two efforts, and they can be considered essentially two editions
of the same effort. Some of you might be hearing from me, and others from
Kevin. Assume that we're on the same page and we're sharing all relevent
information.

We're also aware of recent announcements by Doctors Without Borders and
other relief organizations who have been inundated with offers of help and
donations. We are confident that there will be appropriate channels through
which we can make our contributions work to help those who need it.

As I said, there will be official releases, web links, on-line ticket sales,
etc. We expect that those will be up and running by the end of the weekend.
Some are already in place, and they're just waiting for the official
roll-out.

There will be almost two thousand seats to fill on the 23rd, so let's focus
on that. The program is still being set, but some top acts from the local,
regional and national barbershop and contemporary a cappella communities
will be performing. It's going to be a great show, and a wonderful
opportunity for us to do what we love (perform and/or listen to a cappella
music) and leverage that to help folks who really need it.

Sincerely,

Stephen Saxon

Folks -

I know this is a little late and much planning has already gone on,
but I wanted to offer the following:

For a Berkeley venue, the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd
at 9th and Hearst in Berkeley (1823 Ninth St.) would be willing to
donate space for a benefit concert for tsunami relief efforts. The
recently re-painted carpenter gothic church is rather small, seating
90-100, but the accoustics are good, and on street parking is
generally available.

If there is interest, please give me a call at one of the numbers
below or email.

Also, UC Berkeley has several suitable facilities. A formal request
has been made to make the space available at no cost specifically to
BAAC folks for tsunami benefit concerts. Unlikely? Well, you can
never get to "yes" unless you ask!

Musaic, a San Francisco male vocal ensemble, is seeking men with
excellent vocal skills and interest in singing a broad range of
great a cappella music. We are holding auditions for all parts
from bass to countertenor on Saturday, February 5th, from 10am
to 2pm.

Our current repertoire includes sacred music, jazz arrangements,
spirituals, seasonal songs, and contemporary masterpieces. We
choose technically challenging and artistically relevant music in
order to reach and grow an ever-changing audience. Musaic is currently
preparing for our Spring concert series and is planning to record
another CD this year.

We currently have two CDs: "Beneath the Surface," a collection
of our standard repertoire, and "Peace Be To You," an eclectic
collection of Christmas music.

Folks,

Attached is the official flyer for In Harmony For Asia, the first of a
series of concerts for tsunami relief. We all know that the immediate
international response with pledges has been amazing, but the devastation
around the Indian Ocean region will take prolonged effort and funding before
the people there will be back on their feet.

I encourage you to come out to one or both of the concerts on January 23rd
in Hayward, and a later concert in Berkeley to raise funds for this cause.
We are counting on a big response from the a cappella community and we have
set our goals very high for this first day of concerts.

Featured groups from the contemporary a cappella scene include The Edlos,
The House Jacks, Clockwork, Slammin, Vocolot, and The Richter Scales.

From the Barbershop community we will feature the Bay Area Metro chorus,
Four Score, Garden City Men's Chorus, Velocity, Masterworks, The
Peninsulaires, New Dimension chorus, and Devil Mountain chorus

KGO's David Louie will be serving as the master of ceremonies.

As you can see, even if it weren't a great cause, the show line-up is a
heavy hitting collection of some of the best vocal music to be had in the
Bay Area. Come to support the cause. Come for the music. But by all
means, come!

The Specifics:

Sunday, January 23, 2005
Performances at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Chabot Performing Arts Center
25555 Hesperian Blvd., Hayward, California
Proceeds from all ticket sales will benefit the ongoing relief efforts
of charitable organizations involved in the recent Asian tsunami disaster

Tickets available at:

http://www.you-book-it.com/IHFA - or - http://ihfa.v3.net

Please support this effort by purchasing tickets on line (whether you plan
to attend or not).

If you have questions that aren't answered at either of the above sites, or
if you can't receive the attachment, please go to:

event.

Vocal Interchange, a small amateur a cappella group centered in Walnut
Creek, is looking for a tenor and an alto.

Vocal Interchange rehearses once a week on Mondays in Walnut Creek and likes
to perform wherever we can find people who want to listen. Our music is
focused on 70s, 80s, and 90s pop (Eagles, Yes, They Might Be Giants,...) but
also includes some Jazz, R&B, traditional a cappella arrangements, and "fun"
songs, too. We're a small group of mostly 30-somethings with busy real lives
who have decided to carve out part of our week for some seriously fun a
cappella.

A capella experience or experience with group singing and blending is
preferred.

For more information or to set up a time to audition, please contact Peter
Commons at reply-email.

THE CHORUS (LES CHORISTES)
Opens January 28th in San Francisco
Rating: PG-13 / Running Time: 97 min

1949, post-War France – In a dark, doom-filled school for troubled
boys where hope itself is in short supply, a mild-mannered new teacher
has just arrived, only to find himself surrounded by prepubescent
thieves, inveterate liars, unapologetic rebels and lost souls beyond
reach. Or are they? When Clement Mathieu (Gérard Jugnot)
introduces these supposedly hard-core delinquents to something
they've never experienced before – the freedom and joy of
music – he
discovers there is far mor to these children than anyone dared to
believe.

Outgrossing Harry Potter 3 and Lord of the Rings 3, Shrek 2 and
Spider-Man 2 in France, THE CHORUS (Les Choristes) is an emotional,
music-filled tale about how a very humble man's simple dreams
changed the future for a forgotten group of children. Shot inside a
castle in the French countryside that lends a rich fairy-tale
atmosphere, the film marks the debut of writer, director and composer
Christophe Barratier.

THE CHORUS (Les Choristes) is written by Christophe Barratier and
Philippe Lopes-Curval, directed by Christophe Barratier, and produced
by Arthur Cohn and Jacques Perrin. It should be noted that
Jean-Baptiste Maunier, who plays young Pierre Morhange, does all of
his own singing.

MALE VOICES are needed for East Bay Harmony, an Oakland-based community
a cappella chorus. We are a mixed chorus, but right now we're in search
of men to improve our current balance of voices.

- No auditions - all adults welcome!
- No music reading skill required (helpful practice CDs provided)
- Fun, friendly people
- Repertoire is all a cappella (no instrumental accompaniment)

East Bay Harmony is an a cappella community chorus that rehearses weekly
in Oakland and is open to all adults. We exist to promote the fun of
singing together and building community through singing. We also perform
periodically around the Bay Area.

As mentioned above, our repertoire is all a cappella, and generally
consists of a combination of contemporary pop and rock, doo-wop, world
music, jazz, some rounds, and whatever people suggest (choosing
repertoire is a pretty democratic process). We don't generally sing
classical music, although we'll throw in a fun madrigal from time to
time. Samples of songs we've sung can be found at our website (see below).

Rehearsal info (drop in anytime!):

WHEN: Monday nights from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
WHERE: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 114 Montecito Ave. in Oakland (near
where Harrison St. meets Grand Ave., right next to Lake Merritt).

We're not affiliated with the church; we just rent space there.

For more information, either:

- Check out our website: http://www.eastbayharmony.org
- Call Marlene at (510) 649-1295 or Mark at (510) 547-4597

Cantabile Youth Singers are headed to Carnegie Hall, and we want you to join
us!
Auditions available for singers, middle school through high school.
Deadline to sign up: February 5, 2005

As the guest conductor for the Children's Choir Festival to be held at
Carnegie Hall in June 2005, I am pleased to invite you to perform with us.
It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform with Cantabile and other
choirs in one of the greatest venues in the world. The festival performance
will feature the full festival choir as well as individual choir
performances. And in addition to festival activities, we'll do some
sightseeing, see a Broadway show, and enjoy a special moonlight cruise.

I also know that you are busy and have many demands upon your time. To
encourage you to take part, we have created two options for participation:

· Join Cantabile for the spring semester. You'll be part of the Cantabile
family, and we'll work each week to create beautiful music. Regular
rehearsals are held on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30, at Foothills Congregational
Church in Los Altos and our spring concert will be held June 11.

· For experienced, mature singers who can work independently. Study the
festival music independently (we'll get you copies of all the music and a CD
study guide with recordings of all pieces, and a pronunciation guide). Then
join us for the last six rehearsals and the June 11 concert. We created this
option for mature and dedicated singers who are motivated to work
independently and who may not be able to make the full semester commitment.

If you are interested in taking advantage of this fabulous opportunity, or
if you have questions about the festival, please call the Cantabile office
at 650-424-1410. Festival information is below and our office can supply
additional information as needed.

Best regards,

Dear Music Lover,

The Oakland Youth Chorus is having some serious growing pains. As always,
there are continuing financial issues since the demise of many of the Arts
grants programs. In addition, OYC is seeking a new Executive Director and
redefining the face of OYC. As it looks right now, the concert chorus is so
small (12-16 kids – yes, that’s right) that the main focus is on recruiting
singers, especially men.

I am sending this to you because you are, or most certainly know a young
person who should go and audition for OYC! OYC is how i got my singing
career off the ground with SoVoSo, and I learned a tremendous amount
performing there. So...

audition at OYC no later than February 15. kids can be anywhere from 11 to
21. There is room and there is currently no tuition.
