One might think that, being more than two weeks out, one has plenty of
time to buy tickets for the House Jacks at the Freight and Salvage
Saturday, November 17, 2007. But surprise, the 8:00 p.m. show is MORE
THAN HALF SOLD ALREADY (the Freight's capacity is 238).

So if you plan to get tickets for that show it's best you get them soon.
If you miss out on the 8:00 show there is also a 5:00 show that day.

http://www.freightandsalvage.org/2007/0711-november/info_071117.html

You can avoid service charges by purchasing the tickets at the Freight
and Salvage Box Office in Berkeley at 1111 Addison. The Box Office is
open everyday from noon to 7:00 p.m. You can also purchase advance
tickets while doors are open for other live performances, from 7:30 p.m.
until closing.

While not strictly a cappella, L.A.'s highly regarded Moira Smiley &
VOCO do sets that include a SIGNIFICANT amount of a cappella material.

Flying Without Instruments 10-year reunion concert Nov 17

SF a cappella group Flying Without Instruments is celebrating its 10th year
(!!!) with a grand reunion concert on November 17! As many of you know, we are
8 singers, but our cast of characters has changed over the years. Well, 8 of
our former members are coming back for a big reunion weekend - some from as far
away as North Dakota and San Diego! - culminating in a Saturday night concert
featuring many of our favorite songs from the past decade! Don't all groups do
a 'greatest hits' at about the 10 year mark? :)

Our thanks to all of you who were at our awesome CD-release concert in June -
and for anyone who missed that, we will also be doing some of that material
again this time around. It's going to be a lot of fun, and the theater in the
Randall Museum is a really great space. There's onsite parking but it's also a
15 minute walk (uphill) from the Castro muni stop. We're really looking forward
to it!

FWI-union concert!

expanded its repertoire, raised the musical standards and has made the chorus a
publicly recognized choral group in San Francisco.

Chanticleer. Under his direction, Chanticleer has released twenty critically
acclaimed recordings including the Grammy-winning “Lamentations and

About the Chorus
The Golden Gate Men’s Chorus was formed by Dick Kramer in 1982 as the Dick
Kramer Gay Men’s Chorale. Mr. Kramer, one of the founding fathers of the
American gay choral movement, envisioned a small men’s ensemble reminiscent
of
university men’s choruses of 19th-century Europe. Reorganized as the Golden
Gate
Men’s Chorus in 1988, the GGMC continues to present high quality
performances of men’s choral music. The GGMC presents spring, summer and
winter programs
annually, in addition to guest and community benefit performances throughout
the year.
The Golden Gate Men’s Chorus is a select group of 50 men representing the
ethnic and social diversity of San Francisco who share a common appreciation of
choral music. The GGMC strives for musical excellence, provides a
productive social fellowship for its members, and aims to present the rich
tradition
of choral music to the broad and diverse components of the San Francisco Bay
Area community.
The GGMC is proud to be supported by the San Francisco Grants for the
Arts/SF Hotel Tax Fund and is a member of GALA Choruses, an international
organization of gay- and lesbian-identified and supportive choruses.

Be sure to Join HouseBlend at a concert celebrating the release of our new
Christmas CD, "Merrily Christmas" on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.
This gala event will be held at Cue Productions' cozy nightclub venue located at
1835 Colfax in downtown Concord.

In our first set we'll perform what has clearly been our audiences' most beloved
non-Christmas selections over the past nine years. These selections will
feature our first tenor Bill DeGarmo as Mighty Mouse (not in tights, thank
goodness), a San Francisco version of the Zombie Jamboree while sporting those
scary "Scream" masks, Doug Emigh's memorable rendition of Verdi's "La Donna
Mobile" and, many many other favorites.

Our second set will feature selections from the new CD, including the title
song "Merrily Christmas" composed by our own Doug Emigh. A variety of styles
will be featured in the Christmas set, including gospel, barbershop, jazz,
madrigal, a hymn tune and an unforgettable, and perhaps unforgivable, rendition
of J.S. Bach's Fugue in G Minor.

Admission is FREE, but we request that you bring non-perishable foods which will
be donated to the local SHARE food pantry. (We are told they especially need
boxed breakfast cereal and baby diapers---sort of a "swaddling clothes" theme,
perhaps?)

We expect a capacity crowd, so arrive early. What better way to kick off your
holiday season than with HouseBlend and by bringing some food for the needy?
See you there!"

Mostly Motets is holding a get-acquainted rehearsal on Sunday
afternoon, December 2nd in San Francisco. We plan to have just one
more after that before we begin regular rehearsals in the second half
of January 2008. If you are interested in joining a small ensemble
that sings early sacred music, this is a great opportunity to enjoy
singing some extraordinarily beautiful music and learn more about the
ensemble.

Mostly Motets is a small vocal group that sings works by popular High
Renaissance composers (Tallis, Byrd, Victoria, Palestrina, etc.) as
well as less-often performed earlier music (Dufay, Desprez, Fry,
Ockeghem, chant, Middle English songs, etc.). In addition to the
existing ensemble in Santa Rosa, California, a new ensemble is being
formed to rehearse and perform at a great venue in San Francisco.
The Santa Rosa and San Francisco ensembles will both sing the same
genre of music with the same director; however, they will rehearse
and perform separately in their respective cities. More information
about Mostly Motets is available at www.MostlyMotets.com and details
about the San Francisco ensemble are at
www.MostlyMotets.com/Visitor/Membership/SanFrancisco.

Rehearsal attendance is by invitation, based on experience or an
audition. Our next audition date is November 25th. For more details
or to arrange to audition or attend one of the rehearsals, please see
the web site and contact Steve Moore as soon as possible at (707) 575-
7400.

Founded in 2005, Camerata of Grace Cathedral, a chamber choir that
sings twice monthly at either the Sunday Choral Evensong or the
Sunday morning Holy Eucharist in one of the most magnificent and
majestic and beautiful places of worship in the Bay Area. Under the
direction of Assistant Director of Music, Ben Bachmann, Camerata
rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM. Camerata
sings a diverse repertoire of chant, Renaissance and Baroque motets,
Anglican anthems and newly composed sacred works. Interested singers
must have choral experience, read music, and commit to regular
rehearsals. This is an excellent opportunity to offer one's musical
gifts in a vitally important ministry to the community. Cathedral
membership is not required.

Subject: Men singers for Henry Mollicone's opera, "Gabriel's Daughter"?
steveelrick1
Send Email Send Email

I am writing to see if there are any men (perhaps also women, but
especially men) interested in joining the "Elena Sharkova Singers" (a
portion of the Symphony Silicon Valley Chorale) to perform choruses from
Henry Mollicone's opera, "Gabriel's Daughter," which will be performed
by the Winchester Orchestra, conducted by Mollicone, on Saturday,
December 15 and Sunday, December 16, with a dress rehearsal on Friday,
December 14. Friday dress is from 7:30 to 8:30 in the West Valley
College theater, in Saratoga. Saturday performance is at 7:30 in the
same location, and Sunday is at 7 p.m. in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral,
81 N. 2nd St., corner of St. John, San Jose.

Elena has described the work as being fun and unusual, different from
the usual choral fare. It is operatic, but somewhat like musical
theater. Some men have dropped out from their previous commitment to
this program, so Elena could really use the help--and, hopefully, the
perfomance will be a good experience, in any event.

Henry Mollicone is a well-known local composer-conductor, who regularly
conducts the Winchester (community) Orchestra. The URL for the
orchestra is: http://www.geocities.com/winchesterorchestra, where one
can obtain additional information on the orchestra and the concert.

If you think you may be able to help out, or know someone who can,
please contact Elena Sharkova, either at her SSVC email address, which
is: esharkova@..., or give her a call on her cell
phone, (408) 230-2232.

Many thanks! Steve Elrick
