So you think you know what to expect from a collegiate
a cappella concert?

Think again.

With songs
from their 2009 CARA-nominated album, "Escape Velocity," the Harmonics are
taking collegiate a cappella to a place it has never been before - it's an
a cappella concert, only with individual mics, digital effects,
amplification, lights, lasers, and fog. You've never been to a concert like this
before. This isn't a cappella anymore; this is pure vocal rock.

You won't want to miss this.

THIS
SATURDAY, March 7th. 7pm. $5.

Come and hear Smorgaschord http://smorgaschord.com sing Saturday,
March 7, at Caffe Sportivo in Redwood City, starting at 7:00 p.m.,
free admission. There will be a variety of a-cappella music, lots of
jazz and pop, a smorgasbord of songs, with the debut of a new
arrangement or two.

Caffe Sportivo http://www.yelp.com/biz/caffe-sportivo-redwood-city is
a cafe with an associated training facility next door, but on Saturday
evenings they close the training facility and invite musicians. You
are, however, allowed to dance like crazy and perhaps ride the
'Blender Bike' :-)

See you there!

Curious Blend is a jazzy, eclectic SATB quartet, dedicated both to making high
quality, juicy, beautiful music, and having a lot of fun in the process.
Currently, our repertoire runs the gamut from Puerling to Broadway to some
original in-house masterpieces.

We would love to have both a soprano/mezzo-soprano and a bass/vocal
percussionist join us. We're looking for singers who can either sight read
fairly well, or are good at learning parts by ear, and are able to hold tight
harmonies on their own. We're an upbeat, playful group, and we're excited about
including new folks who would enjoy being part of us!

You can sample our style at www.curiousblend.com.

We meet on Thursday nights (though we have some flexibility in this) in Palo
Alto at 7:30. The four of us warmly invite interested singers to come join us
for an audition. We'll ask you to sing something that shows off your voice, and
join us in a portion of a vocal jazz song which we'll share with you in advance.

Please contact Barbara at bkaplan91@... to arrange an audition. We look
forward to meeting you!

Likely just stay on the list and wait till it gets spammed with the
next audition / concert announcement :)

To find a group you like, I would recommend start going to concerts
that might interest you. Find a group that sounds the way you like
and then ask about auditions. The amount of turnover in bay area
groups is rather high, so you'll likely find some openings somewhat
quickly.

And once you find some groups you like, check their websites.  For example,
here are a couple of Bay Area groups seeking singers, and I'm sure there are
others:

-------------------------------
Kitka is seeking singers with strong, beautiful voices and engaging stage
presence to add to our ensemble. We are looking for vocalists who are adept at
singing in both open/chest voice and “pure” (light vibrato) head voice
styles. Previous performance experience and familiarity with Eastern European
singing is preferred but not necessary.
http://www.kitka.org/calendar/vocalauditions.html
----------------------------
Born to Drone is looking for singers - preferably with Balkan singing
experience. We meet Thursday evenings in Menlo Park, California. We perform
locally several times a year. http://www.borntodrone.org/

originally for Chanticleer about 30 years ago (and which got rave
reviews and lots of laughs, back then):

Showcasing a successful collaboration with the famous Phoenix and

Arizona tour. Included on the program will be the famous folk song,
“I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly,” the spirited “Adiemus” by
Jenkins, and the premiere of Bay Area composer Ken Malucelli’s new
setting of the classic John Godfrey Saxe fable, The Blind Men and the
Elephant, for soloists, chorus, piano and a battery of percussion
iinstruments. The program will close with choreographed songs “You
Can’t Stop the Beat” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”

THE ALL ALLEGRI CONCERT

San Francisco Renaissance Voices (Todd Jolly, Director) presents a
concert of the music of one of the most popular composers of the late
Renaissance, Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652).  For contemporary
audiences, Allegri is primarily known for his legendary "Miserere" but
during his life time he was a prolific composer writing numerous
masses, motets and other works.   In addition to the Miserere, San
Francisco Renaissance Voices will perform other music he composed for
use by the Vatican during Holy Week including his "Missa che fa oggi
il mio sole," a parody mass based on the madrigal of the same name by
Luca Marenzio, his "Lamentations of Jeremiah" and several motets.

WHO:  San Francisco Renaissance Voices (Todd Jolly, Director)
WHAT:  The All Allegri Concert - the music of Gregorio Allegri
(1582-1652) including the legendary Miserere with Missa che fa oggi il
mio sole, Lamentations of Jeremiah and motets
WHEN/WHERE:  (Note:  THREE concerts)
March 28, 7:30 pm - Seventh Avenue Performances, 1329 Seventh Avenue,
San Francisco
March 29, 7:30 pm - All Saints' Episcopal, 555 Waverley Street, Palo Alto
April 5 - 4:00 pm - St. John's Presbyterian, 2727 College Avenue, Berkeley
WEBSITE:  www.SFRV.org
TICKETS:  $20 general admission, $15 student/senior - at the door or
online at:  www.SFRV.org

Allegri's Miserere, a setting of Vulgate Psalm 50 [51], is often
celebrated as prime example of late Renaissance music even though
technically it was written during the confines of the Baroque.  The
work acquired a considerable reputation for mystery and
inaccessibility between the time of its composition and the era of
modern recording; the Vatican, wanting to preserve its aura of
mystery, forbade copies, threatening any publication or attempted
copying with excommunication. They were not prepared however, as
legend has it, for a special visit in 1770 from a 14-year-old Mozart,
who, on a visit to Rome with his father, heard it but twice and
transcribed it faithfully from memory, thus creating the first
"bootleg" copy.  Still performed at the Vatican during Holy Week, the
work itself is rather basic (church music at the time placed a large
gap between written and performance practice) but has become famous
for the ornamentations in the solo parts (embellishments were largely
placed in the hands of the performers' tastes, a practice that
continues today).

  - Rebekah Ahrendt, San Francisco Classical Voice
ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO CHORAL ARTISTS:
Nationally-recognized San Francisco Choral Artists regularly champions the
work of living composers. Known for eclectic programming, the Choral
Artists specialize in a cappella music, both choral masterpieces and
vibrant new music. Now in its 24th season, and 14th under Artistic
Director Magen Solomon, the critically-acclaimed 24-voice ensemble
continues to introduce new audiences to the joy and power of choral music.

MORE ABOUT THE PREMIERE WORK Marina:

The new composition Marina is based on a poem cycle by local poet Lucha
Corpi, and explores different aspects of a native woman known to the
Spanish as Marina, who aided Hernán Cortés in the 16th Century in Mexico.
Also known as La Malinche, she has acquired almost mythical status over
the centuries, and has been both revered and reviled.

Lucha Corpi, a poet and novelist who lives in Oakland, often explores
themes of racism and justice in her works. Growing up in Mexico, she
learned the story of La Malinche as a child. As an adult in Berkeley of
the 1960s, she revisited the story while taking part in the Chicano Civil
Rights movement and her perspective on Marina deepened. Says Corpi, “I
began to appreciate La Malinche in a different context – as an
intelligent, smart woman who took control of her own destiny.”

Since its founding in 2004, Musae (www.musae.org), a San Francisco-based women's
vocal ensemble, has performed diverse and accessible music throughout the Bay
Area, and continues to stretch the boundaries of traditional repertoire for
women's voices. Musae functions as a musical collective in which each singer
identifies as a leader and soloist and contributes actively to the artistic
process.

Audition qualifications include:
     * At least two years choral experience
     * Well-developed vocal, musicianship, and sight-reading skills
     * Vocal flexibility

What is it like to be a Musae member?
Musae singers are trained in the choral tradition, but are not bound by it.
Group members are comfortable:
     * Performing without a conductor
     * Learning music quickly and independently
     * Singing a variety of voice parts in a variety of styles
     * Adopting new approaches, innovations, and experiments in musical
interpretation
     * Performing diverse solos within the ensemble context
     * Incorporating physicality and staging into performance

Each Musae singer is committed to musical excellence and strives to embody the
following core values:
     * Dynamic, versatile, and confident performance
     * Independent and accomplished musicianship
     * The ability to both lead and follow as necessary
     * Vocal accuracy, agility, and expressiveness
     * Active engagement in ongoing learning and growth
     * The ability to take risks and move outside one's personal comfort zone
     * Support of and engagement in the group process
     * The ability to dedicate ample time and energy to producing performances of
the highest possible quality

Auditions for the 2009-2010 season will be held Sunday, May 3, 2009 and Monday,

THE ALL ALLEGRI CONCERT

San Francisco Renaissance Voices (Todd Jolly, Director) presents a concert of
the music of one of the most popular composers of the late Renaissance, Gregorio
Allegri (1582-1652).  For contemporary audiences, Allegri is primarily known for
his legendary "Miserere" but during his life time he was a prolific composer
writing numerous masses, motets and other works.   In addition to the Miserere,
San Francisco Renaissance Voices will perform other music he composed for use by
the Vatican during Holy Week including his "Missa che fa oggi il mio sole," a
parody mass based on the madrigal of the same name by Luca Marenzio, his
"Lamentations of Jeremiah" and several motets.

WHO:  San Francisco Renaissance Voices (Todd Jolly, Director)
WHAT:  The All Allegri Concert - the music of Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652)
including the legendary Miserere with Missa che fa oggi il mio sole,
Lamentations of Jeremiah and motets
WHEN/WHERE:  (Note:  THREE concerts)
March 28, 7:30 pm - Seventh Avenue Performances, 1329 Seventh Avenue, San
Francisco
March 29, 7:30 pm - All Saints' Episcopal, 555 Waverley Street, Palo Alto
April 5 - 4:00 pm - St. John's Presbyterian, 2727 College Avenue, Berkeley
WEBSITE:  www.SFRV.org
TICKETS:  $20 general admission, $15 student/senior - at the door or online at:
www.SFRV.org

Allegri's Miserere, a setting of Vulgate Psalm 50 [51], is often celebrated as
prime example of late Renaissance music even though technically it was written
during the confines of the Baroque.  The work acquired a considerable reputation
for mystery and inaccessibility between the time of its composition and the era
of modern recording; the Vatican, wanting to preserve its aura of mystery,
forbade copies, threatening any publication or attempted copying with
excommunication. They were not prepared however, as legend has it, for a special
visit in 1770 from a 14-year-old Mozart, who, on a visit to Rome with his
father, heard it but twice and transcribed it faithfully from memory, thus
creating the first "bootleg" copy.  Still performed at the Vatican during Holy
Week, the work itself is rather basic (church music at the time placed a large
gap between written and performance practice) but has become famous for the
ornamentations in the solo parts
(embellishments were largely placed in the hands of the performers' tastes, a
practice that continues today).

Mostly Motets is now auditioning experienced singers who are passionate about
sacred music from the Renaissance and Middle Ages. Auditions are being held for
all parts. We plan to hold a few get-acquainted rehearsals with prospective new
members before starting our season in earnest in late August.

Mostly Motets is a small ensemble that sings a cappella works by popular High
Renaissance composers (Tallis, Byrd, Victoria, Palestrina, etc.) as well as
less-often performed earlier music (Dufay, Desprez, Fry, Ockeghem, chant, Middle
English songs, etc.).

The ensemble usually rehearses about twice a month on Sunday afternoons from
1:30 to 4:30 at First Congregational Church of Berkeley. Someday we hope to
also rehearsal occasionally in San Francisco, if we are able to find a good San
Francisco venue.

For more details or to arrange to audition, please see
http://www.MostlyMotets.com/Visitor/Membership and contact Steve Moore as soon
as possible at (707) 575-7400 or by email.
