Calling All Artists - RARB needs a new logo!

Postby rdietz55 » Mon May 28, 2012 1:11 pm
Announcing the first ever RARB Logo Contest!

After 18 years of reviewing the best vocal talent from around the world, we’re looking for the best visual artists to help us step up our game and transform the face of RARB!

What we need… a logo that sums up in an image what RARB aspires to be: the go-to online destination for a cappella criticism and review. We are very open to different possibilities of what this logo might look like, so we want to see where your imaginations take you!

Our previous logo (which can be seen on our homepage) used our acronym (RARB) – feel free to use it for inspiration, or to try a completely original direction.

When we need it…the deadline for submissions is Monday June 18th, three weeks from today!

How do I submit? Go to http://logocontest.rarb.org to fill out the necessary info and legal items.

What format should my design be in? Please send us a JPEG, 500 pixels wide!

What do I get if I win the competition? Besides bragging rights, and the undying respect of your peers, your name will be displayed along with the logo on our new home page! You’ll also be playing an integral role in the re-creation of RARB, as this logo will be used as the basis for the redesign of the site.

I have questions, who should I direct them to? Please email any question to RARB’s Marketing Director, Robert Dietz, at rdietz at rarb DOT org.

Depends on lots of things. How many folks are you expecting? What
current affiliations do you have? Or the pianist? What kind of
material will you present?

I was quite impressed with 2222 Bush in SF. If your material is
consistent with spiritual practice, they might be open to hosting....

Summer Greetings!

Come spend a lovely afternoon with Oakland's own Oakland Jazz Choir Sunday, July 15th, 2-5 pm as part of  the Jazz at the Chimes music series.

The beautiful Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland will be our gorgeous backdrop for this community choir of 13 dynamic vocalists backed by our kickin' jazz trio.
When you come to Jazz at the Chimes you not only hear some great jazz performed by the best local artists, but you also see some of the most beautiful architecture in Oakland. Julia Morgan baby!

After the show there are sweet treats provided by La Farine Boulangerie/Patisserie and Piedmont Grocery.
All for a very low ticket price of $10-$15!

We'd love to see you! Vocal jazz as you've never heard it!

We will offer brilliant renditions of classic and contemporary jazz, including a compelling take on Pat Metheny’s
April Joy and Minuano, a new spin on an 80's classic Everybody Wants to Rule the World,
and a sassy, original arrangement of Hoagy Carmichael's Lazybones as well as some a cappella gems.

Featuring Walter Bankovitch,

VOCAL JAZZ WORKSHOP offered at home/studio of Richard Kalman.

Saturdays June 30, July 7, 14, 21,28

Have a hankering to sing jazz? Broadway? pop? Blues?.
Workshops for the curious beginner to seasoned
singers seeking to fine tune repertoire.

Hello Singers and Muses One and All. After a several month respite,
I will be offering vocal workshops again--for a limited time this summer.
You are invited to participate, join, drop in, observe, or invite other potential students to participate.

INITIAL WORKSHOP DATE: SATURDAY JUNE 30,
11am--1 pm. Fee: $20/workshop. Class Size: Minimum 3, maximum 6.

August dates may be considered, depending on turnout, participation, and motivation.....If you can't make the first date, no worries, come to the next available date.

At the first workshop, we will determine who is ready for a beginning workshop--in which new songs are learned each week by the entire class with a goal of augmenting your familiarity with the range of jazz and popular song;
OR the intermediate class--in which singers select their repertoire and
work on fine tuning their performance of songs they like to sing the most.
The focus of singing is on soloing. The aim is to build your confidence as asolo interpreter of song. There will be some harmonizing, but this is not a choir or chorus class.
While there is a sharp focus on jazz repertoire, other repertoire is equally welcome to work with--blues, broadway, ballads,
contemporary, popular, ancient, folk, brazilian, etc...

You will gain experience in jazz stylings and rhythms--swing, bebop, latin, bossa, blues, and more, and learn how to interpret a song lyric.
Bring songs you want to work on for valuable feedback on performance, delivery, arranging tips, presentation.
Consultation and assistance with preparing original songs is available.

Contact instructor for location and directions.
Instructor: Richard Kalman is a local jazz vocalist, leader of a small vocal jazz ensemble, co-director of the Albany Jazz Band.

Tuition: $20/session
To reserve space, get more info, contact richkalman@...
Location: Berkeley near Gilman and San Pablo Ave.
My home studio.
Kindly RSVP if you'd like to participate. 510-524-6797 home. 510-621-8320 cell.

Student feedback: "You made singing a rich, emotional experience and a dance of sound for me." LB

"I studied jazz vocals with you and found that your approach made me feel safe and confident to try new things".

"I now am able to get solos in musical theatre I never dreamed I could do!!". JD

"I liked it that you spent most of the class time working on songs and singing issues and very little time on small talk and socializing. I feel like I learned a lot more."  AI

Thanks. Best wishes for a relaxing, fulfilling, and fun summer to ALL!!!

Rapid Transit, a local a cappella group, is looking for some strong male and
female voices to add to the mix.

Voice parts sought: Bass and Alto (but will consider other voice parts as well
if it seems like you would be a good fit).
Sight reading, arranging, and percussion skills are pluses.

About Us:  Started in 2005 by a group of friends who missed college acapella,
Rapid Transit is not limited to one musical style. We are not jazz, we are not
barbershop, we are not hip-hop, but we draw from those traditions and create our
own sound.  We hate sappy, syrupy, schmaltzy a cappella music as much as you do.
Probably more.
So what do we sing?  We take popular songs that traditional a cappella groups
wouldn't dare attempt and make them our own. But we do standards too.  Because
we can.

Check us out at:
http://www.rapidtransitacappella.com/

Email if you are interested in setting up an audition time.  Auditions will
begin the 3rd week of September.

We are an experienced Bass (20+ yrs vocal experience) and Vocal Percussionist
(of 9 yrs) who are looking to form a 5-6 person, high-caliber, contemporary a
cappella group. We are looking to form an all-male or mostly-male + 1 girl group
(okay, okay, we've been listening to a ton of the new Pentatonix EP), so we're
looking for the following:

- Solid soloists who can also blend well when singing backgrounds
- A high tenor (or two..)
- One of those "baritenors," with a flexible range
- A strong female vocalist who is willing to deal with 5 guys once a week for a
few hours.

As long as you are a strong musician or soloist, we don't care if you don't have
a cappella experience, or even can't read music - we're flexible! If you can
accurately hold a voice part on your own, blend, and (hopefully) love to take
solos, we'd love to hear from you.

The style we're going for / Our inspirations / Who we want to be when we grow
up:
- Take 6
- The House Jacks
- Rockapella
- Pentatonix
- Boyz II Men

Both of us have been in various groups throughout the years, and we want to get
back to something smaller and more intimate - one person per part and a
collaborative, take-risks attitude. We want to be part of a group of passionate
musicians who are dedicated to making amazing music together.

If you're interested, have any questions, or want to learn more please shoot me

through the next month or so.

Mostly Motets is a small ensemble (10-14 members) singing a cappella works by
well-known High Renaissance composers (Tallis, Byrd, Victoria, Palestrina, etc.)
as well as less-often performed earlier music (Dufay, Desprez, Fry, Ockeghem,
chant, Middle English songs, etc.).

Auditions are open on all parts for experienced singers who are passionate about
sacred music from the Renaissance and Middle Ages. We usually rehearse about
twice a month on Sunday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30 in Berkeley. Singers who
join the group will be asked to provide a list of dates for the year when they
can be available for rehearsals and performances. In such a small group, the
absence of one or two singers seriously impacts the rehearsal plan, so we do ask
for committed attendance once the schedule is arranged.

We anticipate 2 or 3 performances for the 2012-1013 season. Performance dates
will be scheduled after our first rehearsals in the fall.

Hi all,

Good suggestion the other day by Sierra - long overdue - going to start
requiring location at the start of subject lines in ba-acappella postings.

For instance:

Subject: Berkeley/Alameda: Audition to sing Renaissance music
Subject: Peninsula: jazz group forming, need bass and alto
Subject: SF: House Jacks arena concert at AT&T Park

OK to put general area, e.g., Peninsula, if the exact location isn't set.

We describe ourselves as a "band" because we do eventually hope to turn a profit from this venture, but the best way to do that is to make some good music and have fun!

We are looking for a low bass; we have some firepower in the baritone and tenor ranges already.  However, please do not assume you will be relegated solely to wub-wub doo-doo-din-doo parts, because we want to get everyone soloing and having fun.  The more experience the better, but we'll take on anyone as long as they will put in the time and effort to learn their material.

Please direct all inquiries to this e-mail address.  Thanks, and hope to hear from you!
