BJ: My guitar versions look quite close to the keyboard
versions when transformed with Anvil Studio, except,
as mentioned in another post, for the mordents.

The Arioso score is also Here http://coheym.hp.infoseek.co.jp/ as
Largo Cembalo 5 BMW 1056. Ive heard it with orch and Harpsichord but
it sure sonds sweet on Guitar. as for speed on the 998 prelude the
answe would have to be too fast!

BJ: Everyone says that a breakthrough will come. When I first started
I couldn't get off the ground for even beginning guitar for two years.
When I first looked at the Cavatina (not Bach, of course) I through up
my hands. It seemed so simple, yet difficult. Well, Chris told me that
even he doesn't find it easy.

thing is good, including a fast paced Allegro with cascading 6-note
patterns one after another. What speed do you do the Prelude?

BJ: My Parkening method book as the first section as
an exercise. But the complete piece is much more
satisfying. (By the way, the Jesu, Joy of Man's

intermediate section, and the Parkening book does
that too.:-{ More on that later.)

First time I learned it in musical school in childhood, and only after some years playing I realized how beautiful it was. The more I play it the more I like it.
To my mind it is one of the songs which can be played by middle range guitarist, I mean not virtuoso (for example, I even scare to look at Chaccone - it is so monumental:-))))) but at the same time it is Bach with his beautiful and profound melody.
I wish you the best emotions while working on this thing.

BJ: I see you use the 3rd finger on the A position so
that no change in finger-pattern takes place when you
shift.
BJ: Looks interesting. Somehow, when I release I get
a gap in sound and slight extraneous noise on lifting.
I presume that with work I could work that out. There
are other places in the Air where lifts with slight gaps
also occur, but they are on higher strings and I don't
get the extraneous noises.
BJ: Have you committed it to memory and can play it
fluently?

I've been practicing this quite a lot over the past 2/3 weeks, too. I favour the following :
E 0--5---0---------|----------- B -----6---3---0-1-|0---------- G 2----------5-----|-----2-0--- D ---3-----4-------|-------3--- A -----------------|----------- E 1----------------|3--3-------
3 3 4 0 1 4 0 1 3 3 2 4 1 1 2
No 'big stretch' required and the notes ring nicely and run together nicely, too.

(PS I formatted the tablature as Courier New in the
email, but the font gets changed by YahooGroups.
In order to get the spacing of the tablature the same as I wrote
it, you'd have to open the email as a "Forward Message" and
change the font back to Courier New. )

Dear Kirill,
Thanks a lot - this is a really touching piece - I had not heard
it before. It would be great if you send me notes for it.

BJ: I decided to stick with the big stretch:
E 0----5--1--------------|-----------
B -----------3--1--0--1--|0----------
G 2----------------------|-------2-0-
D -----3-----4-----------|---------3-
A -----------------------|-----------
E 1----------------2-----|3----3-----
BJ: Next question. On my instrument the open E is very ringy
compared to all other notes. I presume this is generally
true. So if one _has_ to use the open high E, how does one
make it less ringy in order for the sound to be harmonious
with other notes? Or what does one do to make the others
more resounding to more closely match the E? I have
already put on wound B and G strings, which helps _a little_.

I met him personally at church and he was so gracious when he
found out I was beginning guitar that he gave me his two
method books. The Prelude from the 1st Cello Suite is in
Vol. 2. He drops (6) to D. I really like the fingering

ready for the speed required, so I haven't started that.
Good luck.

All,
Several of you posted messages this month that didn't show up until today. I'm sorry about that; it was a technical problem with Yahoo! that I've now fixed. (Yahoo! was waiting for me to screen the first-time posts of new members, but at the same time Yahoo! wasn't emailing me anybody's posts at all.)
Please feel free to write to me directly if any messages don't show up promptly in the future. I'll also check the website more often in the future.

mostly the lute suites and the second cello suite ... fugue in A minor requires a lot of attention too.

Would Bach have been a christian was he born in Arabia? Interestingly, people typically believe in 'local' gods. He had the same habits (religion, gastronomy, folklore...) as most people living around him at that time, as expected. However, his music is outstanding, that is the key point.

BJ: You are right, Alan. Bach was completely devoted to honoring God in music. But it wasn't just a matter of musicianship. It is interesting to note that when Bach wrote for a secular nobleman and was in his employ, he attended a Reformed Calvinist church, rather than a Lutheran. So apparently his faith was not just nominal, following societal norms, but had conviction and substance beyond the ordinary.
