I hope this is not spaming per say, My name is Danny Vaughn and I live in
Arkansas. We have formed a Pipe Band that has been in existence for over 3
years. We are called the Northeast Arkansas Caledonian Pipes and Drums. We are a
very busy band with gigs going on all the time throughout the year. I would Like
to extend an opportunity to new and long time Pipers and drummers that might be
in the area, We want to compete but we are short a few pipers. We would like to
have tenors and more pipers. So if you are looking for a new band to participate
in then do give us a look see. www.neacpipes. com or google us. or email me.

Maybe, but I've decided that it's just really a guy thing. You all would just as
soon
fuss with the pipes as play them. Kind of like spending more time tying flies
than
fishing with them.

Tale a look at wee babies and children - girls play with their toys, boys take
their
toys apart and analyzing them.

I have a friend and former teacher who is a world champion. When he was little
he
wanted to know all about the pipes. His dad told him that he, the dad, would
take
care of the pipes, all my friend had to do was learn to play. Seems to have
worked.

Got only one D in my whole life - drums. So I guess that's not an option. :)

I have a wedding coming up (renewal of vowels) and they have requested a tune
called Bonnie Boy also known as The Trees They Do Grow High, The Young Laird of

Girl, you picked the wrong instrument. 50% of pipe playing is maintainence and
"fiddling" with the wee bits. By the way, last week I discovered that Home
Depot sells Yachtman's tarred hem-line. Happy bag-tying-in (yes, I still use a
good old sheepskin bag)!

Toneczar.com is going out of business.  He still has cane chanter reeds 18 or
31% off.  Sounds Supreme, Harris, and Shepherd.  You may be able to get some
pretty easy ones for $11 or $13.

The other thing about these reeds is that they are expensive $50-60, and they
crack very easily.  I can buy 5 canes reeds for one clanrye.  For overall tone
quality, learn to play a cane. Just buy easy ones, not the two by fours that
usually comes with a new set of pipes.   I really like the Gilmore cane reeds
the band provides.  Very bright tone. I think they cost about $12.  The clanrye
served its purpose for me, it got me playing when I didn't know enough about
cane.
They were an expensive lesson.

I'm a little surprised that Bob has the issues he did. I have a medium in one of
my pipes and it plays fine. It has never quite had the quality of sound that
cane produces but it is pretty close and the pitch is right on.

I have a slightly different opinion from the masses.

I have a medium Clanrye that I use for practice sessions at home, so I don't run
the risk of ruining or blowing out my cane reeds. The pitch is tolerable, though
a little higher than what I would like. Also, the top hand is a little bit
harsh. Would I ever perform with it? No. That said, it preserves my performance
reeds when I'm dong a lengthy practice session. I mess with my cane reeds a
little bit during practice, just enough to keep them loose and ready to go when
I perform, but other than that, I use my Clanrye.

I've had no cracking or chipping problems at all.

(I should say, however, that the medium Clanrye corresponds to an easy cane
reed, and mine plays at about the same pressure as my easy MacLellan
reeds....about 25" water).

Hi,
We've had several people in our band try these reeds with little success. I
would go along with trying a medium to start, but also working up a good cane
reed. the Clanrye medium I have works fairly well, but I only use it in
emergencies, like when I drop my regular cane reed and split the thing in half!
I'm generally a klutz so I have to have a backup plan :)
Good luck with it.

if the Clanrye reeds follow those made by Mclaren here in Brisbane, they are
only good for backup. I also keep one just for that. I have seen them drop out
in pitch, only to later come back in again. I also find they squeal and on the
bottom hand sound very thin.

I agree with the comments here, you can buy 4 cane reeds in your blowing
strength or slightly harder and learn to manipulate the reeds.

I started with the clanyre. The tone is not as good as cane, not a volume
problem, but pitch issue.  It got me past the first few months of trying to
play a cane reed. Tried the easy yellow, then got a medium. Go for the medium
or try to buy a easy cane reed.  If the cane is too hard to play, you need to
sand it.  Lots of videos on You Tube. Adjust the drone reeds so they don't shut
off.
You should be able to get help from a band if you belong to one.

Hello,

I'm planning to get a Clanrye chanter reed. I've had a lot of trouble with the
ridge-cut cane reed that came with my pipes. It takes a tremendous amount of
pressure to use, and my drones usually shut off once the chanter starts playing.
So, i'm tempted to go with an 'easy' level clanrye reed. However, i'm wondering
what volume the easy one plays at. If the volume is rather lower than not on an
easy, i'll get a medium. Any input would be really appreciated.

thanks

Hello,

I'm planning to get a Clanrye chanter reed. I've had a lot of trouble with
the ridge-cut cane reed that came with my pipes. It takes a tremendous amount
of pressure to use, and my drones usually shut off once the chanter starts
playing. So, i'm tempted to go with an 'easy' level clanrye reed. However, i'm
wondering what volume the easy one plays at. If the volume is rather lower than
not on an easy, i'll get a medium. Any input would be really appreciated.

                                              thanks

congratulations on the new pipes, and happy thankgiving, i've got a bit of good
news too, about 3 years ago i had an atteck of angina pectoris and had a stent
put in at dartmouth-hitchcock hospital. wedenesday i went in to the local
hospital for a "nuke med" stress test and the results were good, both the
cardiologist and i were pleased with the results, so it looks like i'll be
around for a while yet, my 40th wedding anniversary is coming up on 3 december,
with my 73rd birthday following the next day. (and i still tell my wife she was
the best birthday present i ever had.)

I ordered a new set of Dunbar polypenco pipes yesterday. I yet ahead a splurged
for a canmore bag and EZ drone reeds. I know...some of ya'll don't like the EZ
reeds or the polypenco... but my experience down here in muggy Mississippi has
taught me that humidity is the bane of wood and natural reed. Just thought I'd
pass on the excitement. Happy Thanksgiving, ya'll.

me, enjoy them and have a ball !!!!!

Cheers

The neighbors tell me when tuning the drones I sound just like the car alarms
that frequently go off in the area. In fact, my playing has probably set some
off!

was tuning to the drones!
