This group is for people interested in Sacred Harp singing in the Baltimore, Maryland area.
Sacred Harp is part of shape note singing tradition, a form of a capella choral music whose roots in America stretch back into the Colonial period and beyond. Characterized by open harmonies and a distinctive sound, Sacred Harp is music designed primarily for participation, rather than performance. For more information about Sacred Harp and shape note singing, visit Fasola.org.
Sacred Harp singers in Baltimore meet at the First United UCC church building at 1728 Eastern Avenue every Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with a break at 8:30 for a light potluck supper. We sing mostly from the 1991 revision of 'The Sacred Harp,' although other shape note tunebooks are occasionally used. All are welcome, no experience is required, and loaner tunebooks are available.
