On June 2, 2006, the Hampton Grease Band reunited for the first time
in 33 years to perform their legendary 1971 double album, "Music to
Eat." The group included all the original surviving members who played
on the record (Bruce Hampton, Glenn Phillips, Jerry Fields and Mike
Holbrook), along with Bob Elsey (of the Swimming Pool Q's) filling in
for the late Harold Kelling. The show took place at the Variety
Playhouse in Atlanta before a packed house and was professionally
filmed by director Barry Mills and a 5-camera crew. After 2 1/2 years
of editing, Barry has just released the 1 hour and 23 minute DVD, and
it's available for order here.

Hampton Grease Band will always be important for me, as they played
the music to my first riot!

Tonight, in his honor, I think I'll get shit-faced drunk and sing
"Summertime" the way he used to do. Although there's no way I could ever
imitate those big bass pipes :-(
I'd like to have a dollar for each night as a kid I lay in bed with my
transistor radio listening to his show on WLAC Nashville, then WPLO Atlanta,
then WFOM Marietta.
It was a blast playing all those Hop-A-Roonies for him and hanging out at
the radio station listening to all of his monkey business.
Rest In Peace, Big Hugh!

Subject: [bandhistory_com] Big Hugh Baby just passed away a couple of
days ago
Lanier Boatwright called to tell me.
The article about him on AJC.com is very good.
Here's a link to it:

Sad that Hugh Jarrett passed away. I had just been thinking about a reunion and inviting him and others who were influential during the 1960s.
He's probably already working on his first "heavenly hop-a-roony" and talking a band of angels into playing lyres for minimum wage ... he always was tight with a buck.
I may be dreaming but I seem to recall that he sang with us late one night at an Armony in Eatonton, GA.. Foggy memory at best, but I think he sang Love Me Tender but declined to sing Hound Dog.
Todd, thanks for putting this back up. I really appreciate all the work you have done on the website and Yahoo Message Board. I need a dose of nostalgia once in a while, and thesed two places bring back some great memories.
At two different times in the past few months Bob Cowles and Boyd McKeown were here in Chicago and we were able to get together to catch up a bit. It's amazing, neither of them has aged a bit .
Keep us informed on the MHS Band reunion or other significant upcoming events. I am starting to think about another trip to the area ine of these days and maybe I can time it to coincide with some kind of get together.
Hey, Eddie H ... I had no idea you had stayed in the music business ... congrats. Look forward to seeing you when I next get into Big M.
The original BandHistory.com group was deleted without warning by Yahoo.
Jerry Womack made some significant archeological finds of band
memorabilia, so I thought it best to reconstruct the mailing list
to announce his priceless finds!
Here are the links to the pages containing the finds, the new stuff
is at the bottom of the pages:

Eddie Hamrick has posted his profile! Check it out at

I reconstructed this list by reviewing old emails and the profiles
posted to the BandHistory site. If I have missed any email addresses
on this list, let me know.
A search has been added to the website, so that you can put in any
name or text that appears on the site, and it returns the pages on
which the names or text is found.

I attended the Marietta High School band reunion on 14 September,
2007, to coincide with a Marietta HS football game at French Field.
Boyd McKeown and Mayor Dunaway received awards for their
contributions to the Marietta School System music program on the
field before the game. My brother, Jimmy (drum major 1971) and I
attended together. The Band Booster Club talked about making it an
annual reunion, so stay tuned...
