Typical dowel stick dimensions?   Message List
Reply Message #3537 of 6380 |
Hi All,

I'm finding surprisingly little information online about how wide
dowel sticks typically are at either end. And by surprisingly little,
I mean none! Stew Mac doesn't even list dimensions for the dowel
stick ferrule that they sell.

I shaped one from a 3/4" square piece of wood this afternoon, tapering
1/8" per side down to 1/2" square at the narrow end. It came out
great for a first try, but 1/2" seems suspiciously narrow... I'm
worried about splitting when I install the end bolt, even with a pilot
hole. I don't own a banjo with a dowel stick, so I was pretty much
guessing with materials at hand.

Thanks for any tips!

-Andy

... Amazingly, I remembered last night to measure the dowel stick ends on a couple of banjos, and they are indeed 1/2" square. One had the StewMac ferrule on...

Andy: The dowel stick is tappered from 3/4" to 1/2". All the taper is taken from one side of the stick (closest to the skin) and both the edges are equally...
