Call For Papers - September 2008 GUBOQS Gazette

To: Harmonetters,SPEBnet,AHSOWnet,BQPA
Bcc: Distr LS

This is the call for papers for the September 2008 issue of the
GUBOQS Gazette*, an independent pro-quartet publication. We publish
success stories describing regular quartet encouragement sessions
held during chapter meetings. We seek creative ideas which influence
SPEBSQSA members to try quartetting.

Do your quartet sessions give every member an opportunity to sing
with three others at every meeting? Email me a one page article
describing your program. The target date for your article is two
weeks from today.

Thank you,

I wanted to ask you good people about how to keep looking for my
first quartet......I'm getting very discouraged.

I'm running out of good ideas on 'how to make it happen'. I have
been a barbershopper for 4 years and have tried:
1) 'rubbing elbows' at every Spring and Fall competitions in my
district: NED
2) placing Classified Ads in our District e-newspaper, the
Nor'Easter
3) visiting adjacent chapters to sing with them at their events in
which they request support from other chapters.
4) talking with members of the popular existing quartets in Maine,
asking their advice and support.....trying to get the word out that
I'm interested in replacing a retiring Bass or starting up a brand
new quartet
....etc. et al.

Anybody got a 'HOW TO START UP YOUR QUARTET' manual out there for me?

I'd appreciate the help.

Best Regards,

I suggest taking a careful look at email before responding. If it's from a group like barbershopquartet@yahoogroups.com,  that means the message was sent to everyone on the list. If you respond to that address, you are yourself sending to everyone on the list.

I doubt any legit barbershoppers are sending SPAM to the list. Bear in mind that spammers have tricks to find email addresses and also to disguise the source by changing the "FROM" or "REPLY-TO" addresses, to keep themselves from getting caught or taking the heat from irate recipients.

When SPAM does leak into the group, it's probably best to just ignore it. Replying to the group with complaints just creates a snowball effect, especially when people respond to the responders.

If there's an individual you want to comment to (another responder or perhaps the moderator), see if you can find THAT PERSON'S email and send your response directly to them.

I'd also add as someone receiving the group emails in Daily Digest form, that it would help if you left the email thread (all the previous emails) off of your own. They just add to the email volume. But that's a personal opinion.

The group moderator, John, may have a different spin on these suggestions. Just my two cents worth.

Mark Sheldon

Allow me to say this about that, Ed.  Finding the right quartet combination can be a very frustrating and time consuming passtime (but then it seems you already knew that).

I have been involved in barbershop for 32 years and have been almost constantly in at least one quartet, at times in two.  My quartets have won the MAD Southern Division quartet 7 times, placed as high as 3rd at District, nearly always a finalist and one eventually competed at the Senior International once coming home with a bronze medal.  I have sung, so far, in 75 quartet contests, counting as one the contests in which I was entered in two quartets.

My first quartet lasted 14 years tho only the tenor and I were together for the duration.  We had three different baris and three basses.

Some of the same personnel of quartet one formed the second quartet that was around almost 16 years and sang for the entire time with the same four personnel, something few, if any quartets of that duration can say.  I became very "spoiled" on having a quartet.

During the last several years of the second group we were senior competitors only and they encouraged me to participate in more than one quartet since I was (and am still) working 100 miles from home four days per week.  So within the past 6 years I have sung in four other quartets primarily at that out of town away from home location.

Formed one quartet where a tenor and I borrowed the bass and bari from two other existing quartets.  After the first competition, tho we qualified to go on to the next contest (District) both borrowed members dropped out leaving us high and dry and unable to compete at the next level even tho the Q had qualified for District after only six weeks of rehearsal.  Even tho this was in the Washington DC/northern VA area where there are any number of chapters we found it difficult to network to find the right personnel to replace them and that process took nearly six months of earnest searching.  That quartet lasted another 3 years.  In the end the tenor left and after six months of searching for his replacement, I convinced a friend from a former quartet (100 miles away again) to sub in the quartet.  We sang for District and made the finals, then after that contest closed up shop.

Then the bari and I began searching for a tenor and bass to form a new group.  That process took us another several months but we now have a new group formed in January (see below) comprised of all chapter members of the Alexandria Harmonizers.  Last week we sang on our first Harmonizer performance and were a hit with the audience, enough so that we garnered at least one show bid invitation from a nearby smaller chapter.

My point?  Tho the process can be arduous and frustrating, persist.  The results can be quite rewarding.  My advice is continue to go to your conventions and visit other chapters and go out afterwards with the taggers.  After you've sung a few share with them your interest in being in a quartet and have some cards handy with your email address to pass out freely.  If you do not already know them learn your part and perhaps another in all of the barberpole cat songs.  Also, find the materials and learn four parts to as many tags as possible so when you do as I said above you can teach.

Also, contact directly the members of other quartets in your district.  Our current tenor had contacted me directly.  Eventually, if you're good enough to be considered for a quartet, not everyone is, someone will contact YOU.

Though this email is long, I hope it was helpful.

Tenors are always in demand.  We basses seem to be a dime a dozen.

My advice to you is learn all the tenor parts to the polecats  …  even if you can’t sound like a natural tenor, you will always be in demand for a pick up quartet.

Start with a quartet that is almost right, not a perfect fit …  eventually things will sort themselves out, and you will end up with 3 other fellas you want to work hard and long with.

Best of luck!

I am today responding to/continuing dialogue with friends I made at Harmony University 2008 and before, and Bob's message inspires me to keep those friends informed about songs I'm getting/have off paper, currently "Don't Be a Baby Baby," and "Who Will Buy," and wanting to know what they are working on, so that when we meet again we might quickly ring chords beyond those wonderful polecats.

Bob and my HU friends and chapter friends inspire me to contribute to several ongoing quartets, whenever I can. It won't be easy, but I'm gonna' do it.

Thanks, Bob, for a plan I cannot execuate alone yet fully think will happen.

Subject: [barbershopquartet] Re: advice about joining a quartet or forming a new one

A Wedding couple just called to ask about a quartet for October 4th,
around 3:30pm.

Yes, I know, this is the weekend of the Mid-Atlantic District's Fall

If available, let me know. I just pass these things through.

Ideally, you should have a web site, sound clips and a price to quote
as I'll pass this on to the couple.

Hi, Glenn.

I got to know a mixed quartet at Harmony University this summer, also two couples.  One husband sang lead, the other bass, one wife sang tenor the other bari.

They sang a couple traditional barbershop charts; but, the bulk of their rep was doo-wop and novelty charts which seemed to work well for the voicing.  I asked them what their rep search was like and they said experimentation was the biggest thing.  So, be adventurous with it.

Tim Warwick will make learning tracks for any voicing all the way up to SSAATTBB.  As far as existing tracs for the voicing, I can't be sure.

Hi Glenn.  In my Mixed Group we did SATB stuff since it was easiest to find music for those voicings.

However, there is also a web-site for Mixed Barbershop:

The organization appears to be small and informal (and compatible with the major organizations - one of their founders, Jerry Orloff, is a champion recruiter for SPEBSQSA), but they probably can give you informed answers and help plug you into the mixed barbershop community.

Good Luck!

You may want to approach John and Maureen Coffin and the Jamison's in the RMD.  They have done many arrangements.

Don't ya think if the society could expand their scope to support the mixed bshopping more it could help the membership woes as well?   They have contests for youth choirs now and college quartets, why no expand to the mixed genre.  Could even help some of the small choruses who are struggling for members.

What do you think?

Considering starting a mixed group and or inviting wives to learn one or two numbers for next year's show.
