always a finalist and one eventually competed at the Senior International once
coming home with a bronze medal. I have sung, so far, in 75 quartet
contests, counting as one the contests in which I was entered in two quartets.
My
first quartet lasted 14 years tho only the tenor and I were together for the
duration. We had three different baris and three basses.
Some
of the same personnel of quartet one formed the second quartet that was around
almost 16 years and sang for the entire time with the same four personnel,
something few, if any quartets of that duration can say. I became very
"spoiled" on having a quartet.
During
the last several years of the second group we were senior competitors
only and they encouraged me to participate in more than one quartet since
I was (and am still) working 100 miles from home four days per week.
So within the past 6 years I have sung in four other quartets primarily at that
out of town away from home location.
Formed

existing quartets. After the first competition, tho we qualified to
go on to the next contest (District) both borrowed members dropped out

friend from a former quartet (100 miles away again) to sub in the
quartet. We sang for District and made the finals, then after that

new group formed in January (see below) comprised of all chapter members of the
Alexandria Harmonizers. Last week we sang on our first Harmonizer
performance and were a hit with the audience, enough so that we garnered at
least one show bid invitation from a nearby smaller chapter.

conventions and visit other chapters and go out afterwards with the

I am today responding to/continuing dialogue with friends I made at Harmony University 2008 and before, and Bob's message inspires me to keep those friends informed about songs I'm getting/have off paper, currently "Don't Be a Baby Baby," and "Who Will Buy," and wanting to know what they are working on, so that when we meet again we might quickly ring chords beyond those wonderful polecats.
Bob and my HU friends and chapter friends inspire me to contribute to several ongoing quartets, whenever I can. It won't be easy, but I'm gonna' do it.

My wife and another couple have decided to form a mixed quartet, but
don't really know how to get started. Does anyone know of any good
online resources that would help us out? Lingering questions...who
sings which parts? Is is just traditional SATB? Is there barbershop
style music specific for mixed QT? Can we use standard barbershop
arrangements? If so, who sings which part? Does it matter? Are
there learning tracks available for mixed QT? Any help or advice would
be appreciated.

I got to know a mixed quartet at Harmony University this summer, also two couples. One husband sang lead, the other bass, one wife sang tenor the other bari.
They sang a couple traditional barbershop charts; but, the bulk of their rep was doo-wop and novelty charts which seemed to work well for the voicing. I asked them what their rep search was like and they said experimentation was the biggest thing. So, be adventurous with it.
Tim Warwick will make learning tracks for any voicing all the way up to SSAATTBB. As far as existing tracs for the voicing, I can't be sure.

I'm not experienced with mixed quartetting but you might want to check out:

The organization appears to be small and informal (and compatible with the major organizations - one of their founders, Jerry Orloff, is a champion recruiter for SPEBSQSA), but they probably can give you informed answers and help plug you into the mixed barbershop community.
You may want to approach John and Maureen Coffin and the Jamison's in the RMD. They have done many arrangements.

Don't ya think if the society could expand their scope to support the mixed bshopping more it could help the membership woes as well? They have contests for youth choirs now and college quartets, why no expand to the mixed genre. Could even help some of the small choruses who are struggling for members.

Considering starting a mixed group and or inviting wives to learn one or two numbers for next year's show.
The Santa Cruz, CA chorus (not the chapter), www. scbarbershop . org/,
is already set up that way. Women are considered "auxiliary singers" and
are not members of the chapter or BHS. They are singing the men's
arrangements in the men's keys, but filling in where parts are scarce.
There may be others who are doing that, but Santa Cruz I know is.

I go to rehearsal on Tuesday to get away from my family for a few hours and
spend it in the company of men, where I can let my (thinning) hair down, so to
speak. Inviting the wives would drive me right out of here.

I truly do like the idea of mixed barbershop -- and would love to be a part of a mixed barbershop quartet -- in addition to but not in place of my women's chorus. So, maybe there's a way to promote the mixed barbershop without taking away from the exclusively men's and women's groups.

I have to say that I too like to have my night out. That being said, I
realize that there are chapters in small towns where you need help in
filling in the parts. I was hired several years ago, and several towns
ago, to direct a chorus for a chapter in a small town. Through many
circumstances, the chapter had dwindled to five or six guys when I
started. Not one of those was a tenor, or capable of singing tenor.
Thank heavens for my wife. Even though she doesn't like Barbershop (I
don't like her bagpipes for the same reasons), she admirably filled in
at tenor until we recruited a tenor. I can happily say that the chapter
flourished and is now, still in that small town, somewhere between 45
and fifty members, has started another chapter some 50 miles away, and
has spawned a quartet champion. However, had it not been for someone of
another gender stepping up to the plate to complete the four-part
harmony needed for Barbershop, the chapter would most likely have died
right then and there.
Although I would rather sing with all guys, if I were in a situation
where the choice was having a mixed chorus singing Barbershop, or no
chorus, I would take the mixed every time. Then we could build from
there. And I'm not saying we should have female members of the Society.
However, in many of those small towns throughout America, there is
neither men's or women's Barbershop. It's a start to get them both
interested. JMHO.

Don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with mixed barbershop. There
are times when I have stepped up and rung a tag with as many as 3 ladies, so
that isn't the problem. But the note I responded to put forth the idea that
we could "solve" some of our recruitment problems by starting to invite
women into our groups. I am all for the Society "partnering" with a mixed
BBS society, if there is one, in the same way we "partner" with SAI and HI.
Maybe you are right, and in some small towns, a mixed BBS society would be a
better vehicle for introducing the art form. But I also believe that the
uniqueness of 4 male voices singing together in harmony, ringing those
chords, can't be topped by any other vocal music.
