The Freebie for future gigs has worked a couple times for us.
We have done a couple gigs for fellow guarteters church and gotten a couple gigs
from it. I think it depends on the venue. We haven't gotten anything for stuff
we have done at Memorial Ceremonies but church groups have paid off.

I agree that it takes time and money to be in this Hobby. Why are hobbies so
expensive by the way?
I don't pay the bills with my quartet gigs but they do support the hobby. It
has paid for Clothes and expenses as well as covering contest costs. Which can
get expensive.
I also come to this hobby after having been in a rock band for many years. I
will say we charge far less than I ever had with the band.

I want to participate so that people in my area who want barbershop harmony
can schedule and receive good singing, expecting them to reasonably pay for
the value they received; people appreciate the good they pay for.
Its a bench mark of quality and using the competition as a ranking with an impact on how a qtet charges for its services. It should be one of several tools; many qtets avoid competing.
What message is made when so many qtet scores fall below 60? Could be the quality of the singers is NOT very high. Can the Society make a difference? Perhaps our audience does not really care if so n' so came in 1st place in a contest when entertaining at an anniversary party?

If you are a truly avid, quartetman: Would you like to go to a two and a
half day convention where you sing until you drop? Would you like th e
chance to sing in hundreds of quartet combinations? How would you
like it if all the 123 men around you (in an equal number of voice
parts) were all eXtremely well prepared to sing 12 exciting championship
songs that you also had a chance learn (from eXtremely good learning
materials) completely in advance?
Over 700 men coming from around the US and the world are doing just this
at "eXteme Quartetting Harmony Brigade" rallies held in NC, IN, DE (aka
Atlantic), MI (aka Great Lakes), MO (at HU). Applications are now being
accepted for the AHB.

There is not yet an official associcate Harmony Brigade in NED. However a core
of very good men from NED have been attending the official Brigades which are
currently only in DE, NC, IN, MO and MI(the newest one beginning this summer).
This crew of NED participants has been growing and it has included a couple of
well positioned movers and shakers who have been aiming to start one but haven't
quite hit the critical mass of operation men. I believe they've tried some sort
of "Brigade inspired" type activities but not a true "eXtreme Quarteting,
Harmony Brigade" rally (which is quite different).
My sense is that NED will have the next one (hopefully 2011). But it may take a
few more men to come aboard at other Brigades. That's why I've been plugging
our's in DE on the NED Yahoo site.
Meanwhile go to www.HarmonyBrigade.org to see the other Brigades and their event
cycle. Maybe one fits your schedule.

The Atlantic Harmony Brigade will accept applications, until this Sunday night, for the few remaining opening for tenors and leads. Then we will have a full complement of 124 qualified singers (31 on each voice part) and the perfect mix for our 5th Annual weekend of "eXtreme Quartetting". Go to: www.AtlanticHarmonyBrigade.com
The AHB rally will be held in Wilmington DE from the afternoon Friday Aug 20th to Sunday morning breakfast Aug.22.

Good to hear from you, Barbara....nope, I was busy and out-of-sttate on business that I couldn't 'get out of'......HOW ARE YOU ? i meantt to ask you a the DOwnaeadsterrs installatiton banquett back in January......did you everr have thatt operration for yourr sleep apnea ?? gee, I hope not......i loved your voice just the way it was, dear lady........I am avoiding same by using BREATHE RRRIGHT nose strips sleeping on my side with the aide of a makeshift device I strap onto the small of my back and my weight loss prrogram which ain't goin' so well rightt now.....but at least I haven't GAINED any weight.

I am surprised you did not go to the Northeast District- I so badly wanted to go- but had to teach tonight- wanted to see the quaret contest. Of course I'll be going to the Granite Distict contest- How are the Downeaster's doing?? Ready for contest?

I am now retired, love to sing and would be very much interested in joining a group. I do some choir singing at my church, have done many musicals on stage with community theater groups (1964-1983), and had my own folk group in Germany, while stationed there with the US Army.
If anyone knows of some Barbershop groups in the Bowling Green area, I would very much like to hear from you.
