Visit the web page below and click on the "Demo" link to hear it. There's also a
link to see the first page of the sheet music:

Difficulty: Medium

There's one low E for the bass, but you could sing it up an octave if necessary.
The lowest note besides that one is a G.

Learning tracks are available.

Subject: Meet The Jersey Harmony Express! OPEN HOUSE February 28th – NEW LOCATION
njbbslead
Send Email Send Email

The Somerset Hills chapter is excited to announce the creation of a new chorus,
the Jersey Harmony Express. The ensemble will be a premiere men's a cappella
chorus based in the Bridgewater, New Jersey area, the junction of many major New
Jersey routes. We are embarking on a magical musical journey, steeped in the
tradition of the American barbershop style yet featuring an expanding repertoire
to include a selection of challenging contemporary works. The Express is
committed to captivating audiences with thrilling performances and difficult
pieces while providing an enjoyable environment for its members.

The group will be holding an Open House on Monday, February 28th, at 7:00 at the
Arbor Glen Retirement Community in the Community Center, located at 100 Monroe
Street, Bridgewater, NJ. If directions are needed, Arbor Glen has information
at www.arborglen.org/directions.php and they can be reached at (908) 595-6600.

At the Open House you will experience such arrangements as Engebretson's eight
part "Scarborough Fair" and Whitacre's "Lux Aurumque", famously performed by the
Westminster Chorus in the Choir of the World competition and their most recent
CD, "It Only Takes A Moment". Auditions for the ensemble will take place in
March. Those interested in auditioning will have the opportunity to purchase
the sheet music and professional learning tracks to these two amazing works at
the Open House. Your purchase will be credited to member dues should you become
a member of the ensemble.

Jersey Harmony Express rehearsals will be held the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the
month from 7:00-9:00 PM as well as the first Saturday morning from 9:00 AM to
noon. The group welcomes all to attend the open house.

The Jersey Harmony Express will be guiding the future of a cappella music and
welcomes experienced singers to get on board what should truly be a one of a
kind ride. Prior barbershop or a cappella singing will not be required but a
dedication to excellent singing and performance is a must. If interested, please
RSVP to the chorus at jhxchorus@.... For additional information, send us
an email or contact Win Winter at (908) 755-1089 or Charlie Ross at (908)
413-1122.

Send Email Send Email

Fellow Barbershoppers:

Casey Parker leaves us with a special legacy in his devotion to the promotion of
quartetting.

Among his many initiatives is the GUBOQS Gazette, a quarterly quartetting
newletter now in it's 22nd year of publication thanks to Casey's perserverance.

You have likely seen his regular calls on this mailing list for contributions to
the Gazette. He always especially sought articles on quartet activities within
barbershop society chapters, but quartetting craft, announcements, opinions, and
other quartetting interest pieces have also been accepted at the Editors'
discretion.

Those of you who followed the Gazette may also be aware that a couple of years
ago I became the Assistant Editor of the GUBOQS Gazette. Now that Casey is no
longer with us, I am preparing to carry on the publication. My short term plan
is to continue to publish the Gazette in the same format as Casey did, at least
for long enough to meet our current subscription commitments. As the coming year
progresses I hope to communicate with the subscribers to find the best path for
the future of the Gazette and it's mission.

The immediate task is to publish the March 2011 issue, the first without Casey
at the helm. It seems fitting that this issue be dedicated as a tribute to Casey
and his work in promotion of quartetting, and so your rememberances of Casey are
particularly welcome for this issue.

I'm sure that Casey wouldn't want me to stop asking for general articles about
quartetting, so please don't hesitate to send those either.

If you would like to contribute please email me at oqcmark@.... Because
this call for submissions is going out later than usual, I'm moving the response
deadline forward to March 10, 2011. Please also feel free to contact me if you
would like to contribute but are not able to respond immediately, or have
questions.

I also need to let subscribers know that aside from the late call for papers,
this next issue may be delayed as the mailing list is reconstructed. Casey kept
the subscriber list so I need the help of his family to obtain it. They have
been very understanding about this and have graciously offered their help, but
obviously have much more to handle right now. The patience of our subscribers at
this difficult time is very much appreciated.

Thank you for your consideration and support as we move forward with the
Gazette. In the meantime, remember to do what Casey would really want us to do
in his honor: find three others and keep singing!

In Harmony,
Mark Sheldon

Allow me to stick my two cents worth in here...

Someone needs to sing with Ed. I've had the pleasure of working with Ed on a
few occasions and he has a strong, rich voice. Now, I don't know how well he
takes care of his teeth, what he likes for dinner or, even, how he likes his
coffee... but, I DO know that he has a nice voice and all of the "want to" in
the world to sing in a quartet!!! Surely, that's gotta count for SOMETHING!!!

Heck, if I lived closer to Portland, I'd sing with him (and I've told him so)!!!

So, for what it's worth, this man's opinion is that someone ought to snap up
this bassman... and ring some chords! Then go visit high schools and middle
schools and stir up some help for all of those Music Educators out in the area,
who could really use your help!!!!

Enjoy the day,
Every day!
Share that JOY!!!

Ed:

If you could get together for one weekend with 100+ other men (25 on each part)
who were well prepared to quartet a common rep of 12 championship songs- a sort
of super fun Speed-Quartet Auditioning Networking thing, would you?

There are already about 12-15 men from NED who regularly attend the 5 "eXteme
Harmony Brigades" outside of NED. Eventually enough NED men will have had the
experience (enough to hit critical mass- and motivated enough to form their own)
and a Brigade will form.

While it won't guarantee you'll immediately find quartet mates: A) You'll have a
heck of a lot of fun and satisfaction looking B) You'll find the highest
concentration of men with your inclination in your District in one place.

Bottom line: Apply to participate in a Brigade. Suggest the same to all the
strong NED quartetters you know. Come extremely well prepared and join the
growing core of NED men who will probably eventually start one. And from which a
good many good quartets should spring forth.

As unfamiliar as barbershop quartet singing is to the general public, the way it was arranged and performed in its heyday, during the dawn of mechanical recording (about 1895 to 1923) just prior to the Jazz Age, is even less frequently heard or appreciated even among today's modern barbershop society aficionados.

Saturday May 14th (at 2pm) in Queens, NY, will be a rare opportunity to hear it performed live (and accompanied). as it actually was.  This is a chance to discover and enjoy the vitality and artistry that made it the popular music of choice used to launched the record industry.

Dan Levinson, C-melody saxophone/clarinet, Matt Szemela, violin,  Harvey Tibbs, trombone, Conal Fowkes, piano, John Gill, banjo , vocals, Kevin Dorn, drums, Molly Ryan Vocals

If there is anyone who has historic materials or is familiar with reliable
sources of documentation having to do with the Shannon quartet (early 1920s)or
the Reveler's (quintet- late 1920s) please contact me.

Rivermont Records is working on a CD about them. The company is looking for
relevant, colorful, insightful and accurate historic materials or information to
include in their liner notes.

The liner notes are being written by Radio Host blogger Glenn Robison (of
Rapidly Rotating Records- in conjunction with Richard Conaty of Fordham
University's WFMU's "The Big Broadcast").

Rivermont Records is a small specialty recording company who (like Document
Records, Archeophone, Stomp-Off, Timeless and TOM records) specialize in
original early and pre-Jazz music and/or historically accurate modern
performances. Their liner notes are a scholarly resource for serious
preservationists and lovers of early American popular music.
