As unfamiliar as barbershop quartet singing is to the general public, the way it was arranged and performed in its heyday, during the dawn of mechanical recording (about 1895 to 1923) just prior to the Jazz Age, is even less frequently heard or appreciated even among today's modern barbershop society aficionados.

Saturday May 14th (at 2pm) in Queens, NY, will be a rare opportunity to hear it performed live (and accompanied). as it actually was.  This is a chance to discover and enjoy the vitality and artistry that made it the popular music of choice used to launched the record industry.

FREE concert  info at:  http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=202065713167407

St. Michael's Cemetery, in East Elmhurst, will pay tribute to Scott Joplin (interred in St.Michal's) with a FREE concert featuring the Victrolian Vaudeville Quartette, accompanied by renowned jazzman, traditional jazz authority, recording artist and bandleader Dan Levinson    & his Canary Cottage Dance Orchestra. Works will include rare quartet music by Scott Joplin (who arranged for his own quartet and his Opera Treemonisha) and the works of other vernacular composers.

Dan Levinson, C-melody saxophone/clarinet, Matt Szemela, violin,  Harvey Tibbs, trombone, Conal Fowkes, piano, John Gill, banjo , vocals, Kevin Dorn, drums, Molly Ryan Vocals

If there is anyone who has historic materials or is familiar with reliable
sources of documentation having to do with the Shannon quartet (early 1920s)or
the Reveler's (quintet- late 1920s) please contact me.

Rivermont Records is working on a CD about them. The company is looking for
relevant, colorful, insightful and accurate historic materials or information to
include in their liner notes.

The liner notes are being written by Radio Host blogger Glenn Robison (of
Rapidly Rotating Records- in conjunction with Richard Conaty of Fordham
University's WFMU's "The Big Broadcast").

Rivermont Records is a small specialty recording company who (like Document
Records, Archeophone, Stomp-Off, Timeless and TOM records) specialize in
original early and pre-Jazz music and/or historically accurate modern
performances. Their liner notes are a scholarly resource for serious
preservationists and lovers of early American popular music.

I have placed the wendy email address into the moderated status. So, I should be
able to catch these before they go out to the group.

To be honest, I deal with this person in another venue and I'm rather more
concerned that something has happened to them. They are normally much more
active in responses.

I hope they are ok and I hope I have stopped these emails from the group.

Ten expense paid scholarships are available for qualified men (ages 18-22) to attend  the Atlantic Harmony Brigade's   2012  "eXtreme Quartetting" (TM)  invitational weekend convention in Wilmington Delaware, Aug 2012.  Application deadline is Feb 15th.

Applicants need not be members of BHS or experienced quartetters or in a quartet but must have alternative musical and/or performance training and/or experience and references sufficient to meet AHB qualification standards otherwise.

The program is for highly motivated, disciplined, intermediary singers with more than a keen interest in barbershop quartet singing.  The weekend includes a two night hotel stay, meals, first class learning materials (sheet music & learning tracks for 12 champion ship songs), informal nonstop quartetting and quartet partner switching, an adjudicated random-partner quartet contest, a staged show performance, and general barbershop fraternity and mayhem.

Hello everyone! I just wanted to stir the pot a bit here in the
Barbershop Quartet group.

First off, I apologize for a delay in some approvals to the group.
Somehow, they got by me.

Secondly, here is a topic that has been discussed before, but I'd like
to take it to a higher level:

**How to decide what to charge for your quartet's gigs.**

I'd like to hear from people who have won their District/Region Quartet
contest (or higher). Or, if you have been part of a chapter in the
hiring process to hire a District/Region champ or higher for your show.

Quartets: What goes into your thinking on how to price your show? What
all do you write into a contract? Travel expenses? Meals? Hotels? Show
fee? Tickets to the show(s)? Other things?

Also, if you're having to take a whole weekend for travel and you're
self-employed, do you consider your time away in the fees that you
charge?

How many of you have used an agent? And how has that benefitted you? How
did you go about finding an agent?

How many of you have created and sent out marketing packets to create
show opportunities? What has the response been in doing that?

Choruses: What's it worth to have a District/Region champ on your show?
Do you get them just because it means a lot to the members? Does the
District/Region champ status bring in more ticket sales? Do you consider
bringing in *other* District's/Region's champs? How often do you receive
marketing packets from quartets seeking to be on your show? Would you
appreciate getting that kind of thing? How hard is it to find a quality
quartet to be on your show? Lastly, what is it that you want from a
quartet that you hire to be on your show?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences.

Quartets: What goes into your thinking on how to price your show? What

[Matt] It’s a little bit about what the traffic will bear. Average Joes was charging $600 as a show fee, mileage reimbursement from the farthest point from the show (not for each vehicle. The chapter isn’t responsible for the fact that we come from different places). Hotels are currently booked and paid by the chapter. We like to get comp tickets. Unless the hall is sold out, they are a freebie from the chapter.

We were just crowned District Champs a few weeks ago. It’s probably worth mentioning that we’ve decided to reduce our show fee for our championship year so that we can get around to as many chapters as possible to share our year with them. We’re charging $500 this year. After the year has passed our fee will likely increase.

Also, if you're having to take a whole weekend for travel and you're
self-employed, do you consider your time away in the fees that you
charge?[Matt] No

How many of you have used an agent? And how has that benefitted you? How
did you go about finding an agent?

[Matt] Never used an agent

How many of you have created and sent out marketing packets to create
show opportunities? What has the response been in doing that?

[Matt] Have never done that, but it seems a decent idea

I’m responding as someone who has been involved a number of times in the selection process of a headliner quartet to perform on a Chapter show.

On multiple occasions our chapter booked the current (or recent) International Gold medalist quartet. On other occasions we booked a FWD championship quartet. In some cases we booked well known FWD medalists, and more than once we booked non-medalist quartets from our geographic area.

I can say with some confidence that the impact on ticket sales relative to booking an International Gold Medalist and a well-known local area quartet was minimal. Since 90% of tickets are purchased by fans of Barbershop harmony and friends of chapter members, it doesn’t have much of an impact on ticket sales one way or the other. BUT… it can have a major impact on the financial success of the show, especially in economic times like what we are presently experiencing.

Rare Battle of the Barbershop Bands in NY City:  One Night Only  Dec. 3  at 7pm

The Showdown on Stanton: A Barbershop Blowout:  ONE NIGHT ONLY:
OUR TOWN  vs.  SCOLLAY SQUARE

This is a must see for fans of four-part harmony! New York meets Boston, M-AD vs. NED, Age meets Beauty in this battle for barbershop supremacy at the legendary lower east side hipster hovel, Arlene's Grocery (95 Stanton Street  New York, NY). Only $10.

Ears will bleed, and minds will be blown. If anyone says "this is not your father's barbershop quartet show!" they will be lying, because it is, and guess what? Your FATHER'S BARBERSHOP QUARTET IS #%*&ING AWESOME!
