Ten expense paid scholarships are available for qualified men (ages 18-22) to attend  the Atlantic Harmony Brigade's   2012  "eXtreme Quartetting" (TM)  invitational weekend convention in Wilmington Delaware, Aug 2012.  Application deadline is Feb 15th.

Applicants need not be members of BHS or experienced quartetters or in a quartet but must have alternative musical and/or performance training and/or experience and references sufficient to meet AHB qualification standards otherwise.

The program is for highly motivated, disciplined, intermediary singers with more than a keen interest in barbershop quartet singing.  The weekend includes a two night hotel stay, meals, first class learning materials (sheet music & learning tracks for 12 champion ship songs), informal nonstop quartetting and quartet partner switching, an adjudicated random-partner quartet contest, a staged show performance, and general barbershop fraternity and mayhem.

Hello everyone! I just wanted to stir the pot a bit here in the
Barbershop Quartet group.

First off, I apologize for a delay in some approvals to the group.
Somehow, they got by me.

Secondly, here is a topic that has been discussed before, but I'd like
to take it to a higher level:

**How to decide what to charge for your quartet's gigs.**

I'd like to hear from people who have won their District/Region Quartet
contest (or higher). Or, if you have been part of a chapter in the
hiring process to hire a District/Region champ or higher for your show.

Quartets: What goes into your thinking on how to price your show? What
all do you write into a contract? Travel expenses? Meals? Hotels? Show
fee? Tickets to the show(s)? Other things?

Also, if you're having to take a whole weekend for travel and you're
self-employed, do you consider your time away in the fees that you
charge?

How many of you have used an agent? And how has that benefitted you? How
did you go about finding an agent?

How many of you have created and sent out marketing packets to create
show opportunities? What has the response been in doing that?

Choruses: What's it worth to have a District/Region champ on your show?
Do you get them just because it means a lot to the members? Does the
District/Region champ status bring in more ticket sales? Do you consider
bringing in *other* District's/Region's champs? How often do you receive
marketing packets from quartets seeking to be on your show? Would you
appreciate getting that kind of thing? How hard is it to find a quality
quartet to be on your show? Lastly, what is it that you want from a
quartet that you hire to be on your show?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences.

Quartets: What goes into your thinking on how to price your show? What

[Matt] It’s a little bit about what the traffic will bear. Average Joes was charging $600 as a show fee, mileage reimbursement from the farthest point from the show (not for each vehicle. The chapter isn’t responsible for the fact that we come from different places). Hotels are currently booked and paid by the chapter. We like to get comp tickets. Unless the hall is sold out, they are a freebie from the chapter.

We were just crowned District Champs a few weeks ago. It’s probably worth mentioning that we’ve decided to reduce our show fee for our championship year so that we can get around to as many chapters as possible to share our year with them. We’re charging $500 this year. After the year has passed our fee will likely increase.

Also, if you're having to take a whole weekend for travel and you're
self-employed, do you consider your time away in the fees that you
charge?[Matt] No

How many of you have used an agent? And how has that benefitted you? How
did you go about finding an agent?

[Matt] Never used an agent

How many of you have created and sent out marketing packets to create
show opportunities? What has the response been in doing that?

[Matt] Have never done that, but it seems a decent idea

I’m responding as someone who has been involved a number of times in the selection process of a headliner quartet to perform on a Chapter show.

On multiple occasions our chapter booked the current (or recent) International Gold medalist quartet. On other occasions we booked a FWD championship quartet. In some cases we booked well known FWD medalists, and more than once we booked non-medalist quartets from our geographic area.

I can say with some confidence that the impact on ticket sales relative to booking an International Gold Medalist and a well-known local area quartet was minimal. Since 90% of tickets are purchased by fans of Barbershop harmony and friends of chapter members, it doesn’t have much of an impact on ticket sales one way or the other. BUT… it can have a major impact on the financial success of the show, especially in economic times like what we are presently experiencing.

Great to hear you are coming our direction!  Will you be in the Des Moines area?  Our chorus is the Pride of Iowa Chorus, and we certainly welcome all ages.  We have a number of younger members who have joined recently, and they could use all of the support they can get.

Although there isn't a youth chorus in our area, we have been very active in Youth in Harmony clinics, and there is interest in developing a youth chorus if we can get the right impetus going.  When will you be moving?

I am moving to Iowa and will be a member of the Central States District. I am looking for a quartet to sing with at a collegiate level as well as a youth chorus to compete with in the Midwinter Convention. I would appreciate any information I can get. I have been unable to find a Youth Chorus in my area so if I could find one that would be great.

Thank you.

You say you want a quartet!

New England's, newest "eXtreme  Quartetting", Harmony Brigade holds its inaugural showcase on Saturday, Sept 15th.  Here's a link to the show flyer & info.  http://www.nehb.net/

It will be a mix of Champion quartets, a parade of NEHB Brigade quartets and the 100-plus man N.E.H.B.  show chorus.

It will amaze you what 100 guy can do,  at the drop of a hat, when they are completely prepared when they meet.

Check out the show- which will be a knockout in itself;  see if  that's not enough to convince you to  participate in the New England Harmony Brigade next year!

Greetings, fellow Barbershop enthusiasts!

On the weekend of September 14-15, a major event in the world of Barbershop will be making its debut in New England.  Almost one hundred singers, most from the NED but some coming from as far away as Texas, will descend on Central Massachusetts.  They will arrive having learned 12 new songs note and word perfect, in four months, arrangements so difficult that they are sung only by the top quartets in the world.  That’s more than most choruses learn in two or three years but these men have persevered, meeting in small groups to practice after having learned their part thoroughly from the music and learning tracks.  They are practicing and perfecting these songs for a weekend of Extreme Quartetting called a Harmony Brigade.  Get ready; the New England Harmony Brigade has arrived, and it’s a first for the Northeast.

On Friday, the 14th, these men will be randomly placed in quartets and assigned one of the 12 songs they learned.  They will have an hour to rehearse with this “new quartet” and then they get to sing their song for a panel of judges (this year it’s Men in Black) and for the rest of the guys.  Winners will be proclaimed but the fun has only just started because they will be singing all of the other songs with all the other guys for the rest of the weekend, bringing “pick-up quartet singing” to a new level.

Most of the weekend is a private affair with quartets singing everywhere, but on Saturday evening, the 15th, the Brigade will open its doors to the public with a terrific show displaying some of the quartets formed that weekend plus a Chorus of all the men attending.

NED’s own Men in Black will be headlining the show, fresh off an 8th place finish at International in Portland, Oregon.  Also on the program will be a Senior Quartet from North Carolina called Village Green, who have flown here from the Southeast.  These guys have competed in the Senior International Quartet contest several times, finishing as high as seventh place.

This will be a show like no other you’ve ever attended because it will be guys just like you and me who love singing in quartets and have decided to try something new.  Will you be joining us?   I’m one of those guys and would love to have you see what the Brigade is about and maybe be part of it next year.  The show info is below…read on!
