Greetings,
Brilliant Classics is a Dutch budget CD label. I imagine their complete
works would be cheaper than Teldec. In any complete project like this, you
would be likely to find some recordings which are much better or worse than
the rest.
I'm inclined to agree with Dave about buying individual recordings or at
least boxes of recordings.
I suggest that you take a look at the very wonderful site dedicated to
Bach's Cantatas:
http://www.bach-cantatas.com/
There are many CD reviews, discussion of performers, and in depth analysis
of many of Bach's works. This site goes much further than the cantatas.
You will find information about all of Bach's works.
As I have neither of the complete sets, I can't give you a recommendation.
Just to further complicate matters, Haenssler also released a complete set
of Bach's works.
Personally, I also agree with Dave about period instruments. However, I
don't believe that the Koopmann set of cantatas is yet complete. He
released 12 volumes (of 3 CDs each) on the Erato label. He is releasing
more volumes now, I believe on the Dutch label Challenge Classics.
I hope you enjoy your exploration of Bach's works.
Barry.
