Greetings,
I'll make a couple of suggestions, but for fuller information, I recommend
the Bach Cantatas website. There is also a group on yahoogroups called
"Bach Recordings".
Regarding chamber music for violin, there are two important sets. Firstly
the Sonatas and Partitas (BWV 1001-1006). There are many recordings of
these. My suggestions are:
1. The two CD set on the Naxos label by Lucy Van Dael; or
2. 2 CD set by Rachael Podger on Channel Classics.
The other set is the six Sonatas for Violin And Harpsichord (BWV 1014-1019).
Again, there are many recordings. I have the two CD set on Naxos with Lucy
Van Dael and Bob Van Asperen. You can't beat this one at budget price.
Bach wrote three violin concertos (BWV 1041-1043). He also wrote quite a
number of concertos for harpsichord and string orchestra. There is a 5 CD
set of these on the DG Archiv label performed by the English Concert with
Trevor Pinnock. Again, there are many alternatives.
I'm sure you're familiar with the six Brandenburg Concertos and the four
Suites for Orchestra. I have a 3 CD set of these, again with Pinnock and
the English Concert.
I think every famous cellist has recorded Bach's six Suites for Cello (BWV
1007-1012). I have the set recorded for Sony by Anner Bylsma which I enjoy.
I hope this will get you started.
Barry.
