To Whom It May Concern!
I would be Very grateful, if any knowledgeable and friendly person
(s), could advise, as to whether there has been any reviews, of
Prof. Terrell Stone's EXCELLENT recordings of the baroque lute: to
wit: Sylvius Leopold Weiss, "6 Partitas from the Warsaw mss." (Mondo
Musica Label of Munich Germany, 2000), and a very recent (2003)
Padova Italy production, of Paduan Lute Music circa 1500-1600, as
written/performed for the University of Padua Anatomy medical
dissection theatre?
I had been previously familiar with Lutz Kirchoff's fine recordings
of Weiss, and am almost as enthuasiastic about most aspects of
Hopkinson Smith's Weiss CD, but much of the post 1997 releases of
Weiss do not strike my ear as 'simpatico' in re: (eg) tuning,
intrinsic lute acoustics, room acoustics, playing style,
microphonics, and the mysterious art of "mixing".
Since, outside of lutenist-cognoscenti circles, Prof. Stone
and 'Mondo Music GmbH' may very probably not be well known in the
USA (as compared to 'Astree', 'DHH', 'Harmonia Mundi' etc), and
since the baroque lute music of Sylvius Leopold Weiss may not be as
well known as it deserves to many baroque music lovers "in general",
I am researching what has been written, in print and online, up to
now, re: these discs, before entering the fray, as a baroque music
lover/lute afficionado/semi-retired acoustic physicist.
With my sincere thanks, and looking forward to hearing from some
kindly knowing person soon, I am
As Best I Can,
