Disc of the year 2004: Griselda, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin
For the first time, we have also requested one recording from this
list to be awarded the Goldberg prize of Record of the Year. This has
fallen to Griselda, an opera by Alessandro Scarlatti, recorded by
René Jacobs on the harmonia mundi label.
Novelty and quality are two adjectives that are combined in this
triple CD set containing Alessandro Scarlatti's last opera,
considered his masterpiece. This is an important recording that will
undoubtedly help to raise the composer's profile.

Scarlatti's final opera is another operatic masterpiece that has lain
undisturbed for far too long. Thankfully, the indefatigable René
Jacobs and a stellar cast have now rescued it from undeserved
oblivion.

The last opera (1721) of a misunderstood musician. Previously
recorded by Freni, this version returns Griselda to its roots. Even
though the men are more successful than the women and Act III has
been cut, Jacobs constantly keeps the listener on the edge of his
seat!
