I used to make my own rosin. I would pick it up from bleeding boards at a lumber
yard. Then I would heat it in a can. The dirt will go to the bottom of the can
and you can scoop out the floating pieces of wood.
While it is heating (medium or low heat), I would dip a piece of wood or a
pencil in the can of rosin and then dip it in a cup of water to cool it off.
That way you can feel it and see how hard it is getting. More heat = more
hardness. When you have the desired hardness, pour the rosin slowly in warm
water, taking care of just pouring the clean part. It will float and cool down.
While the rosin is still warm and malleable, but cooled enough to handle, you
can pick it with your hands and pack it neatly in a plastic container. One of
those containers for fotographic film that oboists use all the time to carry
water will work very well.
Mixing with other materials like plastics, waxes, oils etc. produces different
and sometimes desirable results. Kneading can also be desirable.
Of the regular market rosins... I think they are not that expensive. Now I
prefer to buy them because of the time involved in picking up the raw rosin from
the lumberyard. My favorite brand is the blue (Softer) Carlsson, but I have not
tried Jade. That might turn out to be good too.
I hope this helps.
Roberto.

Most rosin is not that expensive, especially if bought
at a supply house. I am in the NYC area and use
Nyman's, lots of folks here also use Pops....neither
are expensive. If you are a student and have nylon
hair on your bow, I recommend Pops as it will grab
better.
