Kennan:

The word "album" can refer to both LP's and CD's, and audio tapes as
well. So I hardly use the term "record" anymore...

Krown, Batiste and Washington are the trio that appears at the Maple Leaf a lot,
and released a live recor...I mean "disc" recently. Makes sense that they'd be
together.

It's my favorite "no bass player" disc that's come out in the last...EVER. I
mean, I get the whole Organ thing, but I think it could have been about 14.73%
funkier with a good bass player.

I love that video- I've been emailing it to all of my friends!

I remember when I was a dumb sh*t in high school back in 1967, telling
one of the biker dude dopers that I thought Bo Diddley was rock and not
blues. "What the hell do you mean? That is blues!" After getting a few
Bo Diddley records I saw the error in my ways- although it didn't always
have the 12 bar I-IV-V patterns, it sure as hell was blues.

Since that experience I learned to judge the "blueness" of a particular
artist or song by the feeling, not the trappings; if it has that blues
feeling it is blues to me.

Thanks for sharing that with us!

The Jam was unreal. Daniel Castro is my favorite guitarists and performer
especially with the funny man Johnny Nitro and awesome guitar accompaniment of
Terry Hiatt. These collaborators set Daniel on fire. His whole band is top notch
and so tight. Even when he throws Norwegian Wood in the middle of Mojo Working.
They should be playing venues like Shark Tank. Thank God they play at my local
blues joint. Thanks to Vinnie for all your hard work. Best $3 I ever spent. John

The Fox Theater auction in Redwood City has been postponed again until November

he can find one more investor to allow him to keep it. Great news. John

I'm hoping you will come out and support my project, as I too support local
bands. Support Johnny Perkins & JJ's blues,(othrwise there will be one less gig
available to musicians, dancers, and listeners). And say good bye to Michael, and
thanx for all of the years of great live music and recordings that he has
participated in.

If you havent heard John Garcia, your missing out on one of the most
dynamic, explosive guitarists in the area. His vocal style is strenght and
perfect intonation. Mike Rinta has played with every big name in the buisness,
and the richness added by his bone playing, with MP's tenor sax is a whole
nother sound,,,,these guys are living harmony. Mac Akin, my partner in crime
from the Frankie G & the conviction band will be joining forces with "A" list
player Adam Goodhue, for the rhythm section. If you havent heard this line up
your really missing some of the best and you want to show up and hear us,,,if
you have heard this line up, then you know you want to hear some more. We will
be playing some material from my new CD "LICENSE TO SMOKE", and some new stuff,
some from MP's CD "HOUSE OF CARDS" and some of John's tunes. There will be some
surprise guest artists sitting in for the 2nd and 3rd sets ,,so it should be a
lot of fun.Watch for the write up in the San Jose Mercury !

I dunno how I found out in Chicago before it was reported here, but
apparently drummer Big John Evans died this week. I got word via Dick
Shurman who heard from Rusty Zinn, who heard from his wife. Maybe someone
could confirm this.

Isaiah, Thanks! I'll pass it along - it was great seeing you and Patrick.
That whole day was a heck of a lot of fun, and sitting in with Herb and
Spencer is something I won't soon forget. They can PLAY. What a cool gig
at Brannan's.

And a shout out to Liz DiGiorgio, who did a great job organizing
Saturday's event, and many of the Calistoga events throughout the summer.

I am just getting around to saying it was a great weekend up in Calistoga
and
the highlight was Saturday night when Stan, Larry and Michael from Stan
Erhart's band graciously sat in with North Bay blues legend Herb Gibson
and
Spencer Allen at Brannan's for a great set with the folks from Silverado
Records on hand. Everybody had a great time and we are looking forward to
some
future collaboration in the wine country!

J.C. SMITH PRESENTS: A TRIBUTE TO HOWLIN' WOLF :: FEATURING CHICAGO BLUES
LEGENDS HUBERT SUMLIN AND EDDIE SHAW

Sat, Nov 14th 2009, 8 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

VENUE: Carriage House Theatre

PART OF SERIES : Carriage House Fall/Winter Concert Series

Back by popular demand, J.C. Smith once again channels his love of Chicago blues
in this tribute. Smith, originally from the Bay Area, is an outstanding
performer noted for his energy and charisma. He has shared the stage with some
of Chicago's greats – Pinetop Perkins, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Eddie Shaw
just to name a few. Smith's new album, Defining Cool, is an incredible fusion of
old and new blues styles ranging from West Coast Swing and East Bay Funk to raw
Chicago. Buy a copy at this amazing event!

Hubert Sumlin was voted No. 65 on Rolling Stone's "The 100 Greatest Guitarist of
All Time" list. He crossed the line between impressive to legendary early on
with his recordings for Chess Records in the early to mid 60s as the guitarist
in Howlin' Wolf's band and for a brief time with Muddy Waters. After Wolf's
death in 1976, the band continued on as The Wolf Pack. In the past two years, he
has shared the stage with The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, Aerosmith and
Santana. Sumlin is cited as a major influence by Eric Clapton, Keith Richards,
Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and others. His latest release,
About Them Shoes, got him nominated for a 2006 Grammy for Best Traditional Blues
Album.

Eddie Shaw has been a top Chicago blues act playing venues from Carnegie Hall to
the intimate blues clubs in Chicago. Shaw and The Wolfgang was the original
back-up for the legendary Howlin' Wolf until Wolf's untimely death in 1976. He
also orchestrated the arrangements on The Howlin ' Wolf London Sessions (Chess
Records) featuring Eric Clapton and on Muddy Waters' Unk and Funk (GRT) album;
and won the 2006 and 2007 Blues Music Award for Instrumentalist-Horn. His newest
release, In the Land of the Crossroads, is a sizzling showcase for his blasting
horn and commanding vocals.
