A bit of "Organ" histrionics that was passed on to me from the (unique)
Mr. Don Schleicher (Hammond Service Guy to the Stars in the Bay Area...) whom
I was fortunate enough to work with to upgrade/fix an old Hammond CV and
Leslie 122 I had in my home about 7 years ago:

Laurens Hammond (inventor of the Hammond Organ (duh....)) and Don Leslie
(inventor of the Leslie Speaker (duh #2...), initially were hand in glove
with their respective inventions in pre WW2, however, for whatever reasons,
they had their falling out as a partnership soon after the war. And so Don
Leslie made it more difficult for the connection interface of his various
Leslie Speaker models and the few Hammonds at the time (other electric
organs, such as those made by Wurlitzer, Baldwin, Thomas, Lowry among others,
were also subsequently allowed just to be as easily to hooked up to Leslie
Speakers as the Hammond, and thus achieve that same rich vibrato tone...).
Anyway, when once asked not long after their breakup, Don Leslie referred
to the sound Hammond bass/foot pedals made (w/o being hooked up to his
speaker models), as being similar to that created by (paraphrasing here....)
"an
obese man breaking wind in a bath-tub"....

And so therefore, those later & current organ trios that we all love and
respect, use either the lower manual with the 16' drawbar or the Hammond
bass pedal to cover the bass line, owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mr. Don
Leslie and his invention, otherwise their rhythm section sound would have been
relegated to that similar to "indigestion...."

I grew up with a Hammond in the family living room and, in the early 60's, my
dad turned me on Wild Bill Davis who is credited by many sources as the pioneer
of the jazz organ combo. Here's a link to a bio in case you want to know more:
http://www.ask.com/music/artist/Davis/10409/.
And, here's a video sample from from 1989 that shows he could still kick butt
even though he'd kick the bucket just six years later:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCkboM60BAQ&feature=related

And, just for fun here's an unrelated Bonus B-3 video that I'm pretty sure Dr.
Workman is familiar with:

Hmmm.  I saw Madeleine Peyroux at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater a while back
and also thought the sound suffered.  Too bad, in such a nice, comfortable
venue.

Went to play the bari Friday night at our gig only to find the neck and
mouthpiece were missing. I cannot understand how this could happen and I've
looked all over. The last time I used it was our gig at OPL on 10/24 - and all I
can figure is that I didn't put it in the case when I packed up, and someone
picked it up. I've already checked with Bob - they don't have it there.

Did anyone pick it up by any chance?

Thanks

Greg

The organ bass is cool. It's necessarily different than 'regular' bass,
but regular bass is different from player to player also. I won't say it's
all good, but the variations are interesting.

Pamela Rose uses organ bass a lot, and it always swings. I like watching
Tony Stead or one of the other guys soloing like crazy in the right hand
while they're playing bass in the left. I don't even notice the
traditional bass player is missing until I start adding up the people on
stage. Nancy Wright has been using good organ bass players also.

From a sonic standpoint, its tougher for organists to eq the bass in
conjunction with the right hand - plus organists have to use volume pedals
for dynamics - but the good ones get it down.

Kennan - I'm glad that you "get the whole Organ thing"! It's my favorite
kind
of jazz, and second favorite kind of blues. For those of our members who

haven't listened a lot to this stuff and don't know, the main deal of
organ
groups is that they usually don't have a bass player. Jimmy Smith
INVENTED the
tradition of organists playing the bass lines with their left hand
(augmented
by a percussive "kick" on the pedals). Artistic considerations aside,
this
obviously carries an economic advantage! Especially in the current
economic
climate.

Kennan thinks it could have been funkier with a good bass player. Good
point.
Electric bass didn't turn up on organ records much until soul and funk
became
popular. It was too difficult for an organist to play complex syncopated
lines
and do the incredible solos against it. One anomalie was, of course,
Groove
Holmes - whose funk lines bass players could learn from. It's said that
Groove
was left handed, and that was one reason his bass was so strong.

Playing in an organ trio is a different experience for a guitarist or
drummer.
The organ bass creates a looser, freer groove that is very freeing
sometimes
for a guitarist or drummer.

No offense to Kennan or bass players - just sayin' that the organ thing
is a
different and refreshing groove. As Bill Heid says.... it's a dirty
thang....

The word "album" can refer to both LP's and CD's, and audio tapes as
well. So I hardly use the term "record" anymore...

I love that video- I've been emailing it to all of my friends!

I remember when I was a dumb sh*t in high school back in 1967, telling
one of the biker dude dopers that I thought Bo Diddley was rock and not
blues. "What the hell do you mean? That is blues!" After getting a few
Bo Diddley records I saw the error in my ways- although it didn't always
have the 12 bar I-IV-V patterns, it sure as hell was blues.

Since that experience I learned to judge the "blueness" of a particular
artist or song by the feeling, not the trappings; if it has that blues
feeling it is blues to me.

Thanks for sharing that with us!

The Jam was unreal. Daniel Castro is my favorite guitarists and performer
especially with the funny man Johnny Nitro and awesome guitar accompaniment of
Terry Hiatt. These collaborators set Daniel on fire. His whole band is top notch
and so tight. Even when he throws Norwegian Wood in the middle of Mojo Working.
They should be playing venues like Shark Tank. Thank God they play at my local
blues joint. Thanks to Vinnie for all your hard work. Best $3 I ever spent. John

Truly amazing performer. Geeky looking chubby guy until he started to
play. Then he transformed into a god.

I saw Bo Diddley every chance I got. I never saw a bad performance. The only

The last time I saw him was before he had his stroke at the San Mateo County
Fair. He put on a badass show and played a killer version of Roadrunner.

night and you are all invited! Luke and Miller are out of town and we have very
special guests sitting in for them. Johnnycat will be jumpin with us on guitar.
Was lucky enough to catch him on an off night from playing with Terry Hanck and
the Pleasure Kings. Johnny is fantastic as most of you know and can make that
guitar rock and swing like nobodies business! We are thrilled to have him play
with us! And "Scotti Dawg" is another long time friend of ours from my sista's
band, Isis and the Cold Truth. He can lay it down on the drums and its been
awhile since he's played with us, we're lookin forward to playin with him too!
So if you find yourself on the coast Saturday night, please stop by and rock a
while with us. Its gonna be a blast! We play 8 to 12. See ya!

Howdy,
I got good news and I got bad news. The bad news is that one of the bay areas
finest blues, jazz and R&B musicians is moving away to the midwest. The good news
is that you can hear him with a great supporting cast Fri Nov 20th @ JJ's blues
3439 Stevens Creek Blvd
San Jose (cross street,San Tomas exprwy). Show is form 9:30-1:00
http://www.jjsblues.net/site/calendar.html
Michael Peloquin, saxaphone and harmonica extrodinair will be playing one of his
last bay area shows with the Ginoharmonica band.
The line up will be like this:

Gino on harmonica and vocals
www.ginoharmonica.com
John Garcia on guitar and vocals
Mac Akin on bass
Adam Goodhue on drums
Michael Peloquin on sax and harmonica
www.harpsax.com
Mike Rinta on trombone

I'm hoping you will come out and support my project, as I too support local
bands. Support Johnny Perkins & JJ's blues,(othrwise there will be one less gig
available to musicians, dancers, and listeners). And say good bye to Michael, and
thanx for all of the years of great live music and recordings that he has
participated in.

If you havent heard John Garcia, your missing out on one of the most
dynamic, explosive guitarists in the area. His vocal style is strenght and
perfect intonation. Mike Rinta has played with every big name in the buisness,
and the richness added by his bone playing, with MP's tenor sax is a whole
nother sound,,,,these guys are living harmony. Mac Akin, my partner in crime
from the Frankie G & the conviction band will be joining forces with "A" list
player Adam Goodhue, for the rhythm section. If you havent heard this line up
your really missing some of the best and you want to show up and hear us,,,if
you have heard this line up, then you know you want to hear some more. We will
be playing some material from my new CD "LICENSE TO SMOKE", and some new stuff,
some from MP's CD "HOUSE OF CARDS" and some of John's tunes. There will be some
surprise guest artists sitting in for the 2nd and 3rd sets ,,so it should be a
lot of fun.Watch for the write up in the San Jose Mercury !
