Well, not to get everyone even more worked up, but I thought you
might be interested in this ...
In October of 2003, the Fairfax, VA chapter was celebrating their
50th Anniversary as a chapter, and producing a special show to
commemorate that significant milestone. As part of their
celebration, they decided to invite one of the first guest quartets
they ever hired for a show - perhaps THE first (I'm not 100% certain)
- and invited the Suntones to appear on their show again. This
special invite ended up bringing the Suntones out of retirement and
back into an active quartet status. The only hitch was Bill Cain's
inability to sing because of his battle with cancer. Todd Wilson
ended up being the sub bass that enabled them to once again take the
stage and wow the audiences with their very unique style and blend.
In the course of putting their show set together, and making
arrangements for family members to be in attendance to see this much-
anticipated reunion, someone had the idea to form a quartet made up
of the sons of the Suntones members. As it happens, each son is
heavily involved in music in some way. Bruce Cokeroft, son of Gene,
lives in Nashville, and works in the music industry producing
recordings for publishing companies, and doing a good bit of singing
as well. Terry Franklin, son of Bob, also lives in Nashville and is
a professional singer with a thriving career singing, writing, and
doing concerts with his wife and children. They have a family
ministry and travel all over the world. In addition, Terry was the
tenor singer of the well-known Gaither Vocal Band for a few years
back in the 90's. Todd Wilson, son of Harlan, is no stranger to any
of us, singing in four part harmony from his earliest days (think
crib). He's a freak. The hitch again came with Bill Cain, who never
had a son. Being close to the action by virtue of my association
with Todd, I offered my services to sing bass for the "Sons of the
Tones". And so it was.
With one and a half rehearsals under our belt, we took to the stage
for a five or six song set (a few Suntones songs and an ACOUSTIX
song). The show went pretty well.
The real fun was at the afterglow ... and that's what I'm writing you
about.
I've uploaded the five songs we sang at the afterglow to YouTube.
It's pretty cool. It's very cool to hear that unique Suntones blend
a generation removed from the original.
Just query "sons of the tones" and all five songs should pop up.
Enjoy!!!
