Re: [bbshop] Halo factor - my opinion

But Jeremy, didn't Doug Harrington baritone of the gold medalist quartet Second
Edition direct the Swedish Chorus to their 7th place finish? I don't know, sure
sounds like the halo effect to me.  ;-)

Subject: [bbshop] Halo factor - my opinion

Group

I was in a Harmonet discussion about the halo effect back in 2006. I
believe it existed that year and I still believe it exists. I've seen it
happen many times. I have benefited from it, and I've suffered from it so
it's not just sour grapes. I do not, however, think it is intentional.
Instead, I believe that it is subjective. And it happens in lots of events
- not just barbershop. You see it in the Olympics all the time. And there
is a negative halo effect as well. If judges (again not necessarily
barbershop judges) think less of an entry (unrelated to the contest at
hand), it is likely to be judged harsher than they really deserve. Again,
it is subconscious and subjective.

However, I am not going to offer any evidence because, as I said, it is
subjective - as is my opinion. And I am entitled to my opinion no matter
what YOUR opinion is. So I am not going to respond to any replies to this
message. The last thing I need to do is to get embroiled in another H-net
argument.

BTW - I did not see any particular evidence of the halo effect this year. I
believe the best chorus and quartet won fair and square. In fact, there is
evidence to the contrary.. This was the first contest in which two foreign
choruses scored in the top-ten AND two foreign quartets scored in the
top-ten AND one even medaled! If the negative halo effect existed this
year, that wouldn't have happened. Again, this is only my opinion and I am
entitled to it. You are also entitled to your opinions. Don't try to argue
me out of mine and I won't try to argue you out of yours.

Oh, and I want to extend my congratulations to Crossroads and to the
Vagrants, and to the Ambassadors and to Jim Henry. An amazing feat! And if
there are three gold medalists who want to call me up to be their next
tenor, sign me up! (^o^)
