The best way to treat this type of problem is not to sing or say anything for a
god period of time, as this is what has been told for me.
I went to an ENT and the told me that I had GERD. no other problems thank
goodness.

When it started for me I kept loosing my voice when I was singing and even
talking. As of right now I have been only able to sing 2 songs or about 5-6
minutes before loosing my voice. Forcing me to miss my first conpetition in 26
years of barbershopping.

First, John, before anything. Are you drinking enough water? Are you
hydrating the vocal instrument?

Different recommendations, but I drink a LOT of water.

John,

The symptoms could be due to a hundred different things. GERD, Bacterial
infections, Viral infections, Irritants, and injuries...
Get your self to an ENT doctor and have him/her check you out. It could be
easily fixable but you'll never know if you don't have a doc look down the
pipes.

Good Luck.

I personally prefer the new logo. The old one makes no sense to me. Given the
choice I'll always buy the new one.
That being said, I will gladly sing with any three guys whether they personally
sport the new logo, the old logo, or no logo at all. Let's ring some chords!

Just: H'rah! I bought the last few remaining pages of logo stickers a few
years ago, and use them to replace the new one wherever/whenever I can. I'm
thinking of buying something from the catalog, like that polo shirt, just to
make the point. I agree: I would never stop singing on account of the new
logo, but having had it foisted on us by fiat was pretty distasteful.

Many thanks to all who offered to help me get my "barbershop fix" last week
in Toronto.

A special thanks to the guys at the Toronto Northern Lights and the Upper
Canada Chordsmen who both welcomed me to their rehearsals. I had a great
time singing with both groups and in more than a few pick up quartets each
evening. Also, thank you to Jim O'Neil (VP Music - ONT) who made the trip to
Newmarket to meet and sing with me.

For those of you who travel regularly, I heartily recommend visiting the
local chapter instead of the hotel bar.lots of fun!!!

And for the chapters in western Canada..I'll be seeing you over the next 3-4
months!!!

In Harmony

Hi all - this is my 1st posting so please be gentle with me if I make any
mistakes!

My daughter is getting married in Sept and has asked my quartet to sing Mirror,
Mirror (David Gates) for her - Oh Lord only knows how I'll manage that with the
emotions welling up, but do it I will! Does anyone know of an arrangement for
this lovely song? I have already checked with all the places I know of so
thought I'd throw it open to you knowledgable folk!

Here's hoping for a positive outcome...many thanks.

Thanks Marti for asking.

Nearby churches would be first... but could have definitely been encouraged by
what they read in the neighborhood papers, on the Internet or heard on the
radio, or "word of mouth"..

Bottom line... all are important and necessary.

Of particular interest would be.... which of the modes of advertising
brought in the most guests?

This program is a definite winner when it's properly executed, as Denver
Mile High has apparently done. Congratulations!

###############
From: <sagez@...>
Sent: Sunday, November 22, 2009 11:09 AM

This past Thursday night in Denver Colorado at the Denver Mile High
Chapter/Sound of the Rockies Chorus meeting, we presented certificates to
THIRTY-THREE (33) potential new barbershop singers!! WOW!

####

Borrowing from a tried and true Sweet Adeline (SAI) program (Ready, Set,
Grow), our chapter embarked on this program six weeks ago, and throughout
the period saw FORTY-SIX (46) guests. WOW!

How does it work? Actually it is much easier than you might imagine.

SAI designed this program in the early 1990's and printed a wonderful
resource guide. You may find a copy at a nearby Sweet Adeline chapter or by
contacting their headquarters office (www.sweetadelineintl.org).. The then
BHS Denver Tech Chapter tired it successfully in the 1990's, and now it was
time to resurrect it again.

It begins with a HOOK... How do you get singers to walk through the door?.
The genius idea is to offer "FREE Voice Lessons".... After all, who can
turn down something FREE.

####

Now begins the organizing...

1) First, you need an energetic, self-starter person, good communicator,
good organizer, great smile, and a warm handshake. We have just the fellow
in Keith Kauffman.

2) With Keith's business plan (mostly culled from the Ready, Set, Grow
manual), the chapter BOD authorized the expenditure of up to $2500 for this
project. The $$ amount will vary from location to location.

3) The plan is quite simple... Offer six (6) weeks of FREE voice lessons
beginning on xxx date.

####

Now begins the promotion...

1) Our chapter website was modified to give a home page "splash" to our
"Ready, Set, Sing" program, and a separate page designed to provide more
details - dates, times, location, lesson plans... along with an online form
for the interested party to sign up and provide contact information.

2) The bulk of the money was spent with targeted newsprint ad purchases
(3x3 display ad). Instead of choosing the BIG daily local newspapers, we
sought out the smaller community newspapers in the suburban areas around and
near our rehearsal hall.

3) But it didn't stop there... Through a thorough search of the Internet,
we were able to develop a list of all the churches in a close proximity
(15-20 mile radius) of our rehearsal hall. We created a list of 10-15
churches each, and split them up amongst chapter members to contact. In
most cases, the church secretary was contacted and was asked if we could
place an ad (write up) in the church bulletin... We told her about our
non-profit group and that we are simply looking for a few men who love to
sing!. All throughout, our guys are talking up how great a hobby singing
is. If the church says YES, we send along a copy of the same ad used in
the newspapers, and/or a simple write up of the details for the event.

4) But it didn't stop there... we created a Facebook page. We advertised
on Craig's list.. We spoke about it on our favorite radio stations (KEZW
1430AM).. we sent PSA's to all local media and other appropriate Internet
outlets we could find.

5) As interested folks signed up, we sent emails, excited about their
participation, and hoping to see them on the fist night of the event. In
our case, October 15.

####
.
Now begins the organization...

1) Keith prepared individual notebooks for each guest -- including a
WELCOME LETTER, and all the current Christmas music the Sound of the Rockies
was singing in preparation for our Christmas Show - December 12. Hmmmmm,
are you seeing an ulterior motive?? We also had plenty extra for lots of
walk ups on the first night. We also had new folks arrive each week
thereafter, and were ready with more blank name badges and guest notebooks..

2) Large name badges were prepared with BRIGHT red lanyards...

3) A spreadsheet - signup sheet (in large format) was prepared to confirm
important information... name, email, phone, where did you hear about us?

4) The chapter members were prepared. We told them to be "especially"
cordial at the "kick off" event...Even say "Hi" and shake hands. :-).. We
reminded them of the responsibilities of a "riser buddy".

5) We asked our ladies auxiliary (SOR Connection) to prepare some extra
special cookies for our break at mid meeting.

6) And we asked our two teachers to prepare lesson plans

Week 1 (10/15) โ€“ Fundamentals of Breath Control and Posture
Week 2 (10/22) โ€“ Fundamentals of Resonance and Use of the Soft Palate โ€“ I
Week 3 (10/29) โ€“ Fundamentals of Resonance and Use of the Soft Palate - II
Week 4 (11/05) โ€“ Fundamentals of Vowels and Diphthongs
Week 5 (11/12) โ€“ Fundamentals of Dynamics and Range Expansion
Week 6 (11/19) โ€“ Fundamentals of the Barbershop Style

We are blessed in our chapter to have two amazing vocal music teachers -
Darin Drown (our Musical Director), and Matt Swann (an Asst Director)..
Both these gents are great communicators and teachers, and the success of
the program is largely the result of their preparation for these weekly
sessions. If you don't have such a person(s) in your midst, I would
recommend you go out in your community and find a local educator who would
be willing to assist (or be paid to assist). Maybe check a nearby BHS or
SAI or Harmony Inc chapter too!

####

Now begins the execution....

1) Altho' the first night was filled with excitement and hoopla, our weekly
plan is basically the same.. Rehearsal starts at 7:00p sharp with warm
ups..... All Ready, Set, Sing (RSS) guests stand on the risers next to
their riser buddy.

2) At 7:20 the RSS folks come down front and are entertained with a
repertoire song from the chorus. One night we had our new Rocky Mountain
District Champs (Boiling Point) come and sing a couple of songs.

3) Then the RSS folks are escorted to another room for their 45+ min lesson
with either Darin or Matt. These sessions are part lecture demonstration,
and part group or individual vocalizing. But energizing and fun. The more
involvement of the individual singer the better!!

4) At the conclusion of the lesson, RSS guests are presented with a one
page note thanking them for their participation that week, and giving them a
little more orientation to our chapter, chorus and to our hobby... a little
piece at a time... We also provided RSS guests with learning track CDs of
all our Christmas Music and 2010 Spring Show repertoire.

5) At 8:30-ish, we reconvene everyone... The RSS guests are introduced, and
we take a 15 min cookie break. Of course, during the break there is
spontaneous quartet singing, and tag singing.

6) The last half of the meeting (8:45 to 10:00) is totally optional for the
RSS guests. Some leave, and MOST stay, to continue in the remaining part of
our chorus rehearsal for the upcoming Christmas Show. We are blessed to
have a lot of chapter quartets, all of whom are asked to audition for a few
slots on the Christmas Show. Therefore each week after the break we would
have a couple of quartet auditions. A nice way to show of quarteting, for
certain!

7) I might add a special note that has been very successful. We did NOT
tell RSS guests which part to sing. We let them move around the chorus
"experimenting" ... This proved very successful, as the quests would try to
match their voice and capabilities to a part. Eventually (Week 4), Darin
provided more guidance about which voice type and range was best suited for
which barbershop harmony voice part.

8) Between weeks RSS folks received another encouraging email from Keith
along with a phone call from their riser buddy.

####

What next? Well we have one more carrot at the end of that stick!!

Now that the RSS program has ended, all RSS folks have been invited to sing
with the chorus (for up to 5-6 songs) on our Christmas Show (Dec 12)....
There are two remaining rehearsasl. No specific audition is required... No
"official" chapter membership is required... Just let us know that you want
to sing, and think you are ready. In fact, we'll move RSS guests on and
off the ends of the risers during the show if they only are confident with
one or two songs... And, the expectation is they all return for the last
song - "Silent Night"..

We'll worry about chapter auditions and membership applications after the
first of the year.

###

Do you think it works? We know it does!!!

If you have addition questions, Keith Kauffman will be happy to oblige:

Of particular interest would be.... which of the modes of advertising
brought in the most guests?

This program is a definite winner when it's properly executed, as Denver
Mile High has apparently done. Congratulations!

Subject: [bbshop] READY, SET, SING --> It works!!

Just: H'rah! I bought the last few remaining pages of logo stickers a few
years ago, and use them to replace the new one wherever/whenever I can. I'm
thinking of buying something from the catalog, like that polo shirt, just to
make the point. I agree: I would never stop singing on account of the new
logo, but having had it foisted on us by fiat was pretty distasteful.

Here are my thoughts:

If the members want to buy things adorned with the lyre logo, we will

I just received the Fall 2009 Harmony Marketplace catalog, and noticed
an interesting thing. On perhaps a half a dozen items, the
heritage/lyre logo has been used.

For the longest time the Society seemed to almost militantly divorce
itself from the classic icon, amid wailing and gnashing of teeth by much
of the membership.

Has the Society chosen to acknowledge those who want to hold on to the
familiar image of the Society? Is this a hint -- in the post Wilson era
-- that perhaps Kenosha/Nashville might not have done the greatest job
of the switchover?

Any thoughts on this?

One of my "advance planning" friends is asking questions about men's
Internationals this summer in Philly. Her parents and grown daughter are coming
out from the West Coast to join her in watching the contest and they're looking
for ticket information.

Since this summer will be my first BHS convention in person (but I watch the
webcast and attend the SAI Convention) I'm not sure of the answers to her
questions. I did some searching here on the Harmonet and found some answers,
but maybe some of you can help with the rest.

1. What events are NOT covered in a contest registration besides the AIC show?

2. When do tickets for the AIC show go on sale?

3. In a past harmonet post someone mentioned that single event tix are sold
after the first session begins. Have there been years where very few - or no
single tickets were available?

Thank you all -- looking forward to welcoming you Eastward this summer!

Meeting new people and making new friendships is most definitely part of
what this is all about. Increasing the number of chapters we would all
encounter fosters that.
While there's nothing inherently wrong with combining districts, that's
not the path to membership growth or getting new folks into our hobby.
Why not get with your District Membership VP and find out ways you can
help establish some NEW CHAPTERS in your existing district? I think
there are still plenty of untapped singers out there if we only had more
chapters for more people to enjoy barbershop in their own way! And
having new people is always exciting, and avails us of making those new
friendships and increasing the number of chapters.

We are looking for some new fundraising projects.

We recently heard about a wine tasting and auction in which members donated
a bottle of a favorite wine costing at least $15 and then at the auction
folks bid on the bottles. Some brought as much as $50 and the auction
produced more than $1,000 for the group. Wine tasting expenses were covered
by a $5.00 door fee, and all local and state liquor laws were observed.

What fundraisers have worked well for you?

Doug-

I think Ev was specifically addressing someone's comments regarding
"bingo" or other fundraising events of that nature. Correct me if I'm
wrong, Ev.

Language to these types of events is located in the Society's Rules and
Regulations Handbook, in the "General Statements of Policy" 4 (a).

Here is the language so you can see what may or may not apply:

4. Financial matters

(a) It is expected that our musical talents be employed in presenting
public performances as the primary method of

raising funds. Our chapters and districts should be self-supporting. The
sponsorship or operation of games of

chance, such as lotteries, bingo, etc., open to the public at large, are
not considered as being within the primary

purposes of our Society and are to be engaged in only as a secondary
source and method of raising funds in

support of our educational and charitable purposes. For purposes of the
preceding limitation, the sponsorship or

operation of such games of chance by a chapter or district shall be
considered to be a secondary source and

method of fund raising only so long as, on an annual basis, not more
than one-third of the gross income or other

financial support of the chapter or district (whether received directly
or indirectly for the use and benefit of the

chapter or district) is derived from such sponsorship or operation, and
in no event shall any chapter or district

exceed that limitation. Door prize drawings in conjunction with shows,
where no charge or fee (other than the

regular ticket price) is imposed for the right to participate in the
drawing, and raffles where the entire proceeds

are distributed to a nonprofit Society, district or chapter service
project, are considered to be incidental to our

purposes and will be permitted. A chapter or district may, in its name,
sponsor or operate games of chance, door

prize drawings, raffles, and similar activities only if it is legal to
do so under applicable law. In such event the

chapter or district must: (i) strictly comply with all applicable
federal, state, and local laws and regulations; (ii)

obtain all required registrations, licenses, and permits; and (iii)
maintain complete and accurate books and

records, file all reports and returns, and pay all taxes and fees
required in connection with the activity. No

chapter or district is permitted to represent or imply that the Society
is, or will be, in any way responsible for

any such sponsorship, operation, or activity.

By the way...The Rules and Regulations Handbook can be found in the
Document Center of the Society's website.

Happy reading! J

Hi Ev,

My chapter enjoys strong financial health; in fact, on 11/7 we staged
our
our most successful annual show ever. Most of our yearly income comes
from
these shows and from Singing Valentines. But with with so many chapters
in
dire financial straits I find it hard to believe that there'd be a fixed
limit on such things as bake sales, candy sales, silent auctions, etc,
to
bolster a struggling chapter's bank balance. Can you (or anyone reading
this) site official chapter and verse on this?

Thanks,
Doug Stewart, Music Director

Here's a new arrangement by Joe Johnson which he did for this rousing hymn, Men
of God. Great stuff, especially the bass line...wow! Hope y'all like it.
Thanks Joe!

You can hear the straight version by Daniel Gillis here (look for Men of God
under learning tracks):
