It occurred to me that, in pointing out so strongly the characteristics of the
Millennial generation, that there was nothing provided with which you could
compare them. Therefore, this little supplemental information will help you,
as you ponder these mighty forces at work in our culture.

Let's start with the WWII folks. They were born between 1901 and 1924. They
would range from 85 to 108 years of age. That makes their average age VERY OLD.
They are dying off rapidly and will be replaced by the Millennials. Born in a
time of national crisis, it was their duty to solve the crisis and pass things
on to the next generation. They exhibit the same characteristics as the
Millennials discussed earlier.

Following them was the "Silent" generation. They were born between 1925 and
1942 making them between 67 and 84 years of age. Many of our barbershop
community falls within this age range. They didn't fight the war of crisis but
are the children of it. In fact, throughout history, this generation has a
"sense of just missing something big". They are focused on the needs of others
and are highly engaged in family activities. The replacements for this
generation began to be born around 2004. "They see conformity as the best path
to success and tend to be, collectively, risk averse". They provide the
expertise and refinement to improve and adorn new institutional innovations
formed during the crisis. They married early and moved into the suburbs. Today
they are very affluent, active seniors.

The next group is the Baby Boomers. They were born between 1943 and 1960 making
them between 49 and 66 years old today. They grew up in a period of post crisis
affluence and came of age during a time of cultural upheaval. They become
moralist and values-obsessed midlife leaders and parents. "They basked as
children in Dr. Spock permissiveness, suburban conformism, Sputnik-era
schooling,......." Gave birth to flower child movement "as their youth
pathologies worsened, SAT scores began a 17 year slide." They became "self
absorbed yuppies".

Next were the Gen Xers. The members of this group were born between 1961 and
1981 making their ages range from 28 to 48. They are today's parents with the
oldest just beginning to become grandparents. They have lived through "a
childhood marked with traumatic events such as divorces, latchkeys, open
classrooms and a general decline in moral values and morality" (G rated movies
to R rated movies, e.g..). "As young adults, maneuvering through a sexual
landscape of AIDS and blighted courtship rituals, they date and marry
cautiously. In jobs, they embrace risk and prefer free agency over loyal
corporatism. From grunge to hip-hop, their splintery culture reveals a hardened
edge. .......they lean toward pragmatism and nonaffiliation and would rather
volunteer than vote. Widely criticized a Xers or slackers, they inhabit a
Reality Bites economy of declining adult living standards".

There it is for your perusal and consideration.

Might I direct your thinking toward an answer to this question: Which group do
you think would be the most profitable for us to direct our efforts at
recruitment toward? (not to the exclusion of all others of course). And the
attendant question is: Where should we direct our financial and human resources
in order to achieve the best results?

By now, armed with all of this information and the statistics provided earlier
in Part 1, the answers should be self evident.

Next week, beginning on Monday, we will roll out the Youth Enrichment Program
which should provide successful and very simple solutions to not only societal
(BHS) problems but also to some personal quests for satisfaction, joy,
fulfillment and a desire to contribute and share of yourself. Be open and be
surprised.

All quotations and many snippets above were excerpted from the book "Into the
Fourth Turning" by William Strauss and Neil Howe (Broadway Books). If you are
of mind for a more in depth understanding, it is a fine book well worth your
time and money.

Blessings, enjoy the turkey,

Montana Jack, keeping the faith and keeping it barbershop

I'm hoping the subject will catch the attention of a few trivia buffs in the
crowd!

I am trying to put together a personal judging history for myself. Actually,
I've been maintaining this for some time, but only started about 3 or 4 years
ago. Thanks to Steve Tremper's wonderful Harmonet Reporter site I was able to
retroactively rebuild my history. However, there is one contest I judged that is
not listed on that site...

I judged a Harmony Inc contest early in my judging career in Area 2 in the
Spring of 2001 in Burlington VT. I would love to know the actual date of this
event, to complete the history. Unfortunately, I don't know of any web sites
that maintain this kind of history for the HI Area contests, but perhaps someone
in the Area would know the details. All I can recall at this point is that I
judged with Beth Ramsson and had a great time!

If anyone can find that information out, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Looking through the most recent Harmony Marketplace catalog and based on all the
merch available in Anaheim, there are a lot of items being sold right now with
the old SPEBSQSA logo. I think its market is mainly for those of us on the
inside, not on the outside.

I look at it like a baseball team that sells hats or jerseys with old logos.
Fans of that team appreciate it, but somebody who's not a fan of that team
wouldn't necessarily associate the team with the retro logo. I'm a Cincinnati
Reds fan, and my fellow Reds fans appreciate my calling them "the Redlegs" and
wearing a hat with a throwback logo, but a Cubs fan wouldn't necessarily
associate.

In order to maintain continuity, though, the club markets itself with one
primary logo, as it should. In that aspect, the BHS isn't any different. Those
of us in the loop will recognize the new logo, old logo or whatever, but I think
it's right for the BHS to establish one primary logo for the purpose of
recognizability.

Not to say which logo should be considered the "primary," though. I joined the
BHS after the new logo was adopted and had absolutely no qualms with it. And if
for some reason I didn't join the BHS, it would not have been because of the
logo.

I thought it was a cool, pretty hip logo. I still like the logo. I've always
thought there's been too much hubbub about changing the official logo. I don't
see the point. Since the logo changed, numbers haven't increased, but why does
the logo have to be to blame? A few years ago, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays changed
their name, their colors and their logo. Last year, they went to the World
Series but was it because of the logo and the name change? No, and nobody has
suggested otherwise. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions changed their logo before this
season. Are they any better off than they were? Not really. Is anyone in Detroit
suggesting going back to the old logo as THE solution? (Caps used because Yahoo
Groups doesn't allow italics.)

I love the old logo. Today, though, I think it's better treated as a "throwback"
logo for unofficial use and for appreciation within the Society. A good way to
make young people feel out of the loop (and unwelcome, not so indirectly) is to
promote your society with a picture of a lyre and an acronym that pokes fun at a
1930's government program.

Ending on a positive note: Let's reiterate that I love the old logo.

Dear Harmonet Friends,

Thanks to Keith Eckhardt, everyone now has easy access to the full version of
the Neil Howe interview about his book "Into the Fourth Turning". I hope you
enjoy reading the piece. It has been getting rave reviews from those who read
it all the way through.

However, I did promise to do a bullet point version for those who simply don't
have the time or inclination to read the full interview. This version will, de
facto, be very brief and will not convey the impact of reading the entire
interview.

a.. The basic thesis of the book is that there are four repetitive
generational groups in our society at any moment in time, with another dying out
and almost gone.
b.. These four groups each span approximately 20 years. During this time,
those four groups are the "Silent" generation, the Baby Boomers, the Gen X'ers
and the Millennial. The WWII generation is dying out and being replaced by the
Millennial. This entire four group period is called a Saeculum---a long human
life.
c.. The newest group, called the Millennial began to be born in 1982 (present
age 27 years) and ended it's birth cycle somewhere around 2003+/- (present age 6
years)
d.. Each group has it's own characteristics that are completely different from
the other groups, due to their different age in history. They can have entirely
different attitudes, and behaviors, as well as a different sense of
self-identity , a sense of who they are and how they fit into the community and
nation as a whole.
e.. There is a event that seems to end each group and begin another. This
point is called a turning (hence the name of the book). We are presently in the
Fourth Turning which is called and will involve a Crisis. Institutions are
suddenly proven ineffectual and are torn down to build something entirely new.
In reading the book, I noticed that this period involved usually involved a very
serious war.
f.. At the end of the fourth group, another group, having the same
characteristics as the first group, begins.
g.. This same cycle has repeated itself all through history.
h.. Our present younger generation mirrors the characteristics of the WWII
folks. Listed below are some of the characteristics of this group---the
Millennial.
i.. Surprisingly conventional when it comes to social norms and values
j.. Exhibits a decline in youth dysfunction, a decline in youth crime, a
decline in smoking and drinking, a decline in teen pregnancy and teen abortion.
k.. They want to be good neighbors, good citizens and to have balanced
careers.
l.. They want to get married and have children
m.. They want to spend their free time with their families.
n.. There is a virtual disappearance of the generation gap today.
o.. In terms of social morals, they are highly conservative
p.. They completely accept their parents' culture (in stark contrast to our
prior generations who rejected everything and rebelled against all authority)
q.. They seek out the advice of their elders.
r.. More mannerly, civic spirited and emotionally placid.
   s.. Seek order and harmony.
t.. Like to work in groups
u.. "In pop music, the millennial will resurrect the old ritual of happy group
singing, from old campfire favorites to new tunes with simple melodies and
upbeat lyrics". (quoted from the book)
That is a very sketchy (and I hope intriguing) synopsis of some of the most
salient points in a 16 page paper. I really hope it catches your interest to
spur you on to reading the entire paper.

Please remember that each generational group has its own individual and unique
characteristics. Quite purposefully, I did not go into those other than the
Millennial. I am certain that you can see why I chose to do that.

Once again, let me point out that reading the whole interview will explain a
whole lot, to each of us, about our own lives.

Hope this helps a bit, blessings, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone,

Montana Jack, keeping the faith and keeping it barbershop
Make certain that this is the best day of your life

Fellers,

I think it would be cool if, now that the toxic dust has mostly
settled, the old logo was eased back into the mainstream as a viable
modifier to the BHS logo. I mean, if BHS is supposed to be shorthand
for something, let's not be so shy about it.

It doesn't appear as though our rolls have swelled appreciably since
the new logo was introduced . . . certainly not in proportion to the
ill will it created.

Stop causing trouble and get that corn out of the field so the deer will run
a bit more!

When I identify myself as a Barbershopper, and introduce people to the
organization people look at me funny when I say Barbershop Harmony Society
but have all those SPESQSA items on my books, cars, and things.

Proper or not I always introduce my hobby as supporting the Society for the
Preservation of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. I also offer the
Barbershop Harmony Society as the new name so that people might better
understand what the group is about faster than wondering what all those
letter mean.

Lots of money was invested in the new logo as everything is done to remove
the old logo from our minds.

I have listened to a lot of very bad music making from guys in nice suits in
public and at some competitions. I have as well heard some really nice
Barbershop harmony from guys in striped suits and the old style hats!

It's not the suits and shirts guys, it's the quality or the product and how
it's presented.

I am ok with the new logo. I would like to be able to replace my old logos
with the old logo without needing to infringe on copyright laws by making
them myself or having them made.

I as well have noticed that the logo has not changed the membership so much
as it was said by some to be what was needed.

Let's just not make the same mistake. There should be a way to incorporate
both labels without causing so much confusion thinking there were actually
two groups and not one.

Happy Thanksgiving! It is especially thankful for my family and me. It's
been a very good year, as things are getting better for us than they could
be.

Now let's get that corn down so the deer will run past my blind!

You will all be delighted to learn that the folks at Casey's Research have most
graciously granted us permission to use their interview with Neil Howe, one of
the authors of "Into the Fourth Turning". You can access the interview by
clicking on the link below. It is colored purple as I send it---don't know what
will happen out there in the ether.

The full document is 16 pages long but well worth your time to read and digest.
Later on today, after I have finished my duties of baking cinnamon rolls for
Thanksgiving, I will attempt to bullet point some salient points for those with
less time to read the entire document. Hopefully, I can have it in your hands
by morning.

Since this is a long weekend, you might find it profitable to print out the
entire piece and read it in little snippets between plays of your favorite
teams.

As you read along, you will find yourself saying "Now I understand" about
yourself, your kids and your parents. This generational exposition really
clears up a lot of questions.

The purpose of this is to give you some solid background information for the
introduction of our own Harmonet Youth Enrichment Program which will be
presented next Monday.

Let's take the weekend to relax, enjoy our blessings and spend some real quality
time with family and friends. This Saturday, I will be watching the only
unbeaten team in the FCS play their first playoff game. It's the only honest
way to end the football season.

Blessings and a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving to all of my Harmonet friends,

Jack
Montana Jack, keeping the faith and keeping it barbershop

As a Casey reader, we thought you'd be interested in a free special
report we just published called, Into the Fourth Turning.

In this special report, David Galland, managing editor of The Casey
Report, interviews Neil Howe to find out what he foresees for the U.S. economy,
future investment opportunities, and American society in general.

The Fourth Turning, an amazingly prescient book that Neil Howe
co-wrote with the late William Strauss, describes generational archetypes and
the cyclical patterns that define economies, making history repeat itself. The
Boston Globe stated, "If Howe and Strauss are right, they will take their place
among the great American prophets."

A gentleman named Jim McCarthy needs 2 songs arranged in barbershop style for a
musical he has written. Unfortunately, he is on a fixed income and can only pay
$75 per song. If anyone is interested please call him at 412-793-3157. He
seems like a very nice old fellow who needs a hand.

Hi Jack
HARMONY ARCHIVES has Home On The Range. The original song, words [Higley] and
meiilody [Kelly], dates back to 1873 and was conclusively judged to be in th
Public Domain by a major court case. We have on file several arrangements and
recordings plus the sheet music pianovocal . Interestingly. a popular
arrangement of HOTR is not contestable because it has the Tenor singing the
melody in part.

PS - The Copyright alluded to is probably on the recoriding.

Hi Mitch
HARMONY ARCHIVES has Always "Arrangement Q". We have aarrangements for both
male and female voices, plus recordings. This is a famous Berlin tune dating to
1925. This would have been in the Public Domain except for the infamous Sonny
Bono Copyright rip-off law.
I alerted the world's largest mens singing organization, but they refused to
lobby against it, excuse-citing a threat to "tax exempt status".
Too bad. A billion dollar windfall for Sony & other publishers.

Who arranged Always as sung by Michigan Jake in 98 contest?
It also appears on the Can't Stop Singing CD.
Thanks,

Don Gray also has an arrangement that you'll like. Second chorus is particularly
nice.

This should be simple. First off, there can't be more than 2 or 3 songs written
in Eb, can there? ;-)

The Jack Baird arrangement published by the Society is a beautiful,
relatively simple chart that is one of the BEST songs my "ersatz" bbs men's
chorus sings. They do a great job and about 85% of them were never bbs-ers

What song (once popular) written in the key of Eb has an opening chord that is
an E major chord.

Good luck.

The first one to get the correct answer will receive a copy of my latest chart.

Hi all,

I am working on a project for our 2011 show that requires some research. As part
of the USO's 70th anniversary, we want to sing songs from the different eras
that span most of that time. While it is fairly easy to look at the hit songs
from any particular decade, I would like to get some responses from men and
women who served (or actively serving today) to learn what songs you listened to
while overseas that had the most meaning to you. Whether they were songs that
made you think of home or simply gave you a few minutes to take yourself away
from where you were at that moment, it doesn't really matter.

If you could respond musicman_pamv@... with the following information, I
would be most grateful. I want the song selections to be as truly reflective as
possible of what our veterans and active military actually listened to while
serving.

    Years Served
    Locations stationed
(country or theater is fine -- I don't need details)
Branch of military (rank if you wish)
Songs - feel free to include details if any particular songs carry special
meaning for you

This is quite an experiment. I have no idea what songs I might get from you all.
Oh, don't worry about whether or not a song is "barbershop" -- we'll cull the
list down as needed. We might even mention some titles as part of the script
without actually singing a song.

Thanks in advance for your help.

In harmony,
Steve Sammonds
Music Director, Palo Alto-Mountain View Chapter, BHS
long-time Harmonetter who has been silent the past few years :)
