Hey All,

I'm helping a friend find material for a future chapter show. Does anyone know
of any arrangements of "classic" TV commercial jingles? I'm searching for some
of the most memorable ones from 1980-ish and earlier. We all know (and love)
the BBS version of the old Rice Krispies jingle; I've already got that one
covered. Here are a few others on the wish list:
Meow Mix
Alka-Seltzer
Texaco
Oscar Meyer
Brylcreem
Armour Hot Dogs
Cracker Jacks
Slinky

Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

In Harmony,

Roger Olson
Tenor, CrossWise
Tenor, 24 Karat Ring

Hi Steve:

A "Golden Oldie" Barbershop song would be "Down Our Way", "......... You know
ev'ry body and they al know you, and even policemen say, 'How do you do'
.........."

That might be a little stretch but it does refer to policemen.

One of the problems with these is that they are all copyrighted materials.
Permission to arrange and use would need to be obtained from the owners.

I experienced a slightly different take on "Down Our Way" when I was asked to
fill in with a chapter quartet. At "Even policemen say", the tenor, who was a
policeman, stepped forward, pulled out his badge, and said, "Up against the
wall, and spread'em."

It was kinda lost on our audience, but with a group of cops around, it should
get a laugh.

But wait, this group DOES have a barbershop connection! I checked their website
and found the following page: http://www.singerselite.com/nick.shtml

Here's a quote from that page:

"The Nickelodeon [quartet] was formed to sing at The Queen Mary in 1988. Founder
Jim Raycroft was singing with The Dapper Dans, Disneyland's barbershop quartet,
when the Queen Mary's entertainment department called. A roster of 12 singers
was established and, since that time, the Nickelodeon has been seen all over
California and has helped to open casino hotels in Laughlin, Nevada.

The Nickelodeon is a traditional, stereotypical barbershop quartet that sings
the standard songs of the era with a fast-paced, vaudevillian style of humor
that can be presented before any audience. They are equally at home on a stage
and strolling the scene."

Yeah, Jim is quite the musical entrepreneur. Need a carolling group? Jim's got
one. Need a Barbershop quartet? He's got one of those as well. He also has a
small a cappella "modern" group & the large "band" already presented.

Interesting guy!!

The Jax of Harmony from Iowa (a former quartet from Des Moines, I think) used to
do a medley of these.  I don't know if the arrangement was authorized or not.
It had Texaco (The Man Who Wears a Star), Chevrolet (See the U.S.A. in a
Chevrolet, etc.), Ajax Parody (Use Ajax, the foaming tooth powder (or
paste)--floats your teeth right down the drain), and many more.  Jerry Pike was
the bass.

Burma Shave signs might go well with this show too.

I know there is a logical explanation, but it escapes me at the moment.
Is that "Marian (the Librarian)" the one we know and love from The Music Man?
If so, how does she relate to law enforcement?
Is she an undercover narc?
Is the trouble in River City drug-related?

Actually "Little Pal" is from the 1929 movie "Say it With Songs" Starring Al
Jolson, in which he hits a man who made a pass at his wife and was in JAIL.
Little Pal was his son who was paralyzed in an accident. So it fits.

It makes more sense if you spell the name "Marion".

Alcatraz, Sing Sing, Marion...

Rumors (BHS) sang Tom's clever medley to comedic effect at dozens of chapter
shows through 1998-2001.

In case the barbershopping world hasn't heard, the wonderful bass Jerry
Pike passed away a few weeks ago. Jax of Harmony were indeed from Des
Moines. Their lead was Mike Rehberg, who still lives here in Des Moines. He
could answer your question about their arrangement.

Mike Bell explained the significance of Marion/Marian in the "Prison Medley."
Now, for pal Shelley, the lyrics to "Cheek to Cheek":

Leaven . . . worth, he's in Leaven . . . worth,
And his future there is looking awfully bleak.
And before too long he's really gonna reek
When he's in close quarters show'ring [pause] once a week.

Tom Felgin, bass of the Renegades and Chicago News, also had a mixed quartet in
the Chicago area that did many of the old radio commercials. You might contact
him for arrangements.

Persons looking for arrangements of radio or TV advertising jingles should be
aware that all of those were, and still are, under copyright. I suppose if
you
make up the music by ear and never write anything on paper, you are OK.
But don't be too sure. Ask a copyright expert at BHS HQ.

Actually "Little Pal" is from the 1929 movie "Say it With Songs" Starring Al
Jolson, in which he hits a man who made a pass at his wife and was in JAIL.
Little Pal was his son who was paralyzed in an accident. So it fits.

But wait, this group DOES have a barbershop connection! I checked their
website and found the following page: http://www.singerselite.com/nick.shtml

Here's a quote from that page:

"The Nickelodeon [quartet] was formed to sing at The Queen Mary in 1988.
Founder Jim Raycroft was singing with The Dapper Dans, Disneyland's barbershop
quartet, when the Queen Mary's entertainment department called. A roster of 12
singers was established and, since that time, the Nickelodeon has been seen all
over California and has helped to open casino hotels in Laughlin, Nevada.

The Nickelodeon is a traditional, stereotypical barbershop quartet that sings
the standard songs of the era with a fast-paced, vaudevillian style of humor
that can be presented before any audience. They are equally at home on a stage
and strolling the scene."

Check out the photos on the page noted above - you may see some familiar
faces...

Yeah, Jim is quite the musical entrepreneur. Need a carolling group? Jim's got
one. Need a Barbershop quartet? He's got one of those as well. He also has a
small a cappella "modern" group & the large "band" already presented.

   Interesting guy!!

Here are some old melodramas that have been floating around the barbershop
world for some time:

"You Can't Convict the Mother of the Girl I Love"
   "Hang on the Bell, Nellie"
"Roll the Patrol Closer to the Curb (Grandma Cannot Step That High)"

Also, I have arranged a "Prison Medley," which includes these tunes:

"When the Midnight Choo-Chool Leaves for Alcatraz"
   "Sing-Sing (Sing)"
   "Marian (the Librarian)"
   "Cheek to Cheek"
   "That's Life"

   Tom,

I know there is a logical explanation, but it escapes me at the moment.
Is that "Marian (the Librarian)" the one we know and love from The Music Man?
If so, how does she relate to law enforcement?
   Is she an undercover narc?
Is the trouble in River City drug-related?

I wonder even more how 'Cheek to Cheek' relates to prison, or maybe not!

It makes more sense if you spell the name "Marion".

   Alcatraz, Sing Sing, Marion...

Rumors (BHS) sang Tom's clever medley to comedic effect at dozens of chapter
shows through 1998-2001.

The Jax of Harmony from Iowa (a former quartet from Des Moines, I think) used
to do a medley of these.

Al started his barbershopping in Bloomington, IL, then moved to the Denver

be able to steer me to his obituary. Thanks!
