Groupanizer has an internal blog function we use, and I write in it about
once every week or two to update the chapter on things we need to
accomplish and interesting events which are coming up. I try to write it in
an upbeat, humorous, or quirky fashion so that it actually gets read. So
far, it's been effective and I've gotten mostly positive comments.

I don’t know if anyone has posted this earlier. If so, my apologies.

The University of California---Santa Barbara has a project to preserve old
cylinder recordings. They have quite an extensive library. There are many of
the old quartets such as the Edison, the Peerless and the Premier quartets.

They can be streamed and/or downloaded as an MP3 file. The sound quality is
pretty good, considering that these recordings are 100 years old +/-.

Check it out under www.cylinderpreservation.ucsb.edu/search

Blessings, enjoy,

Montana Jack, keeping the faith and keeping it barbershop

That link didn't work for me. This one however, DOES work:

BTW... If you search with the key "quartet", there are over 500 hits...

The first thing I would do is to hire on a top tier, young, quartet to act as
full-time liaisons for the society (i.e. Vocal Spectrum, Prestige, After Hours,
Da Capo, The Crush, etc.). The purpose of this would be to go around to high
schools and colleges across the nation to show them that barbershop is not just
for old people. A Capella music is becoming increasingly popular across the
nation these days. We need to show the nation that barbershop does it best. We
have gradually seen a couple quartets doing this on their own, but if we had a
hired on quartet who would act as the spokesmen for the Society, our credibility
would increase ten-fold.

Also, I think trying to improve the small, dying choruses is a great idea that
doesn't provide much benefit in the long run. Instead, I think we need to
embrace the development of newer, younger chapters. The youth chorus festival
is one of the best things going on right now. In many aspects it is more
entertaining than the big boy chorus contest. Focusing on building this up and
increasing its popularity is key. In order to do this, I think the hired on
quartet mentioned above would be a great resource to spread the word about how
students in high school and college could get involved.

Along the lines of the youth chorus festival, I think combining the youth chorus
festival and the CBQC into one event/weekend would be huge. Many of these young
people may get involved with choruses, but yet have little understanding that
they could also compete in a quartet if they wanted to.

One last thing I would do is to change the "Youth Membership Dues" category to
be 30 and under instead of 25 and under. I think increasing that age range
makes sense because anyone 30 and under is allowed to perform in the youth
chorus contest, so why not allow them the youth discount, too. Also, the 26-30
year old people are in a tough situation as they have recently graduated from
college. Most of them are still paying of student loans, so they aren't
necessarily in the best position financially. Increasing the Youth Membership
Dues age range is key to getting more young people in. The society is blessed
that we are getting in more young people, however, the 26-30 age range is not
increasing nearly as fast as the 25 and under age range. The best part about
accommodating for these folks is that they will decrease the average age of the
society by a significant amount. Right now, the dues (society, district, and
chapter dues) full price are very difficult for some people to afford,
especially that initial payment upon joining.

Along the same lines, I would change the dues process to allow for a payment
plan from the start of joining the society. Right now (someone can correct me
if I am wrong) new members have to pay the full price right from the start and
for the next year's dues can set up a payment plan, but not for the initial
payment. The initial payment, at least in my time as Membership VP for my
chapter, has seemed to be somewhat scary for most incoming members. This can
scare some people off, especially those in that 26-30 year old range mentioned
above.

As you can see, my ideas focus on the youth aspect a lot, which makes sense as I
am in that youth category. I know, for me, the moment I reach 26 will be a
frightening one because now my dues will suddenly double. I am only 23, but I
still have a year's worth of college left until I graduate, and not long after
than, my dues will suddenly double right around the time that student loans will
be raring their ugly head. I know for a fact that my situation is not unique.
I have seen the effects and faces of those in that 26-30 year old range when
they find out that they have to pay around $200 for a year.

Anyways, those are just my thoughts.

A search on barbershop quartet didn't show any hits.
I guess they don't subcategorize quartets except as vocal and instrumental.

Or hire four or more quartets part-time, so they can keep their day jobs.
Wasn't there already an offer to send quartets to do just that?

Hi Netters,

This is a quick note to let you of a new arrangement site:
www.ChordsUnlimited.com.
Welcome to some great singing opportunities. I am putting some of the best
barbershop songs from past years into new arrangements. The list of available
songs is small now but will be growing weekly. Those available now are mostly
in the public domain, songs from a time when some of the most memorable music
our hobby has enjoyed were written. As far as possible, all arrangements will
be for both men and women. Check out the site and check back often.

Many thanks.

In Northern California the D040 Nevada Placer chapter has for many years held
the Somewhat Serious Quartet Contest and Bean Feed. This is a popular
multi-chapter event held the first week in June. It all starts at 6pm for hot
dogs, chips, beans, and cold drinks--Donations greatly appreciated. During this
time pickup quartets form and practice, then choose silly names and register to
compete with one song. At 7:30pm the contest begins with a well known district
quartet acting as judges. There’s a playful thing that happens now and then
when a quartet member very openly hands money to the judges before they perform.
It goes to our YIH fund. Just about any kind of silliness happens, but singing
quality does matter. The top three quartets get medals made from canning lids.
These are highly cherished awards.

One of the unusual quartets was where a college age Society Associate assistant
director teamed up with 3 college men and they sang a polecat with the pitch
raised so that she could sing Bass. They took second place as I recall.

This event was quickly purloined for our district conventions. In the Spring
we typically hold the contest part (no bean feed) at our Spring district prelims
convention and in the Fall it becomes a Woodshed Quartet contest. In both of
these contests the judges are the audience.

For the woodshed contest I provide 20 or so melodies and the quartets have up to
3 hours to perfect their harmonies, tiddlies, and tags (optional). The
quartets are asked to choose a melody that they haven’t sung as an arrangement
before.

In both cases the audience has judging pads and they can select Excellent, Good,
or Fair. Poor is not an option. The top sheet of the judging pad is torn off
and handed in after each contestant. Computing each score takes about as long
as the next song. Somehow this simple scheme always picks the correct winners.

In these informal contests everyone has the opportunity to compete, listen, and
judge. It’s all in good fun and the winners proudly wear their canning lid
medals all weekend long, right along with the men wearing their hardware from
International.

Anyone out there ever sing a Barbershop arrangement of "coming in on a wing and
a prayer"? I see the Society has 3 arrangements of this song. Looking for an
easy version and a recording of a Quartet singing the song. Any help would be
appreciated.

A great idea!! Another one would be to enlist the entire membership of the AIC
to act as ambassadors for the Society, and get them to visit chapters in every
district.

as full-time liaisons for the society (i.e. Vocal Spectrum, Prestige, After
Hours, Da Capo, The Crush, etc.). The purpose of this would be to go around to
high schools and colleges across the nation to show them that barbershop is not
just for old people.

Hello, Alexander!

I highly recommend MailChimp -- www.MailChimp.com. It is free for most (up to
2000 list members); extremely easy to use; provides excellent support and
education; and has the best features in the marketplace.

We convert a ton of clients from Constant Contact to MailChimp.

Hope this helps!

Has anyone considered doing a cost-benefit analysis on this proposal? Namely,
how much would it cost, how would it be funded, and what the return on
investment would be? It's great to jump on the bandwagon, but bandwagons have
been dropped because they cost money; they don't pay the bills. Only the
performances pay the bills. And as time has shown us, even those are gradually
disappearing.

Recruitment is fine: We need to get them inside the tent. Retention, though,
keeping them there, is even better.
