Hasn't Finale had, for a couple of years, the capability to be given a melody
and return a (simple) barbershop arrangement of the song? Maybe not yet an
'app', but interesting stuff.

c : manner or style of performing or accomplishing according to recognized

I know that it seems like it, but it isn't too early to start planning for the
75th anniversary of the Society. I wonder what some of the chapters are
planning?

This is a wonderful milestone and just ripe for celebration.

For the 50th anniversary the Society published the Heritage for Harmony
songbook, which is a wonderful collection of music that is easy to sing and
gives any chapter or quartet an instant repertoire.

I was thinking that someone or some committee could pour through the Society's
Catalog of songs, both published and unpublished, and come up with a list of 75
songs that define each year of the Society's existence. Some examples would be
1983 "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry" (Side Street Ramblers); 1979 Toy Soldier's
package by the Grandma's Boys; etc. Each year there has been one song that has
really taken the Society by storm and are probably already available in the
catalog.

I think it would make a nice Anniversary package.

   Any other thoughts?

I want to use the Flash Mob technique with a quartet which “accidentally
meets” where men are present, has a moment of drama to get attention, then
sings one song well, hands out very attractive invitation cards, and departs to
the next location.

Candidate locations include coffee houses, building materials stores, auto parts
stores, long lines of people at movie theaters or sports events, county fairs,
chili cook-offs, community events, and anywhere else local men may be
congregated. It can be a week long happening.

Drama Plan: Two quartet members enter and get in line or appear to shop. The
next two enter, exclaim “Hey, look who’s here!” They great each other
loudly, ask each other if they are still singing? Yes, of course. Then “Hey,
let’s hit one now”. They look around a moment, then say sure, why not.
“How about ____________?” OK! Someone blows the pitch and the song begins.
If it’s a love song and a woman is near and listening, sing to her. When the
song ends, quickly hand out the promotion cards to everyone in the area and
quickly depart for the next location.

According to Dave Briner's arrangement, the way the (Florida) Dapper
Dans have always sung it...

(INTRO) Fathers, no one seems to realize that fathers are the most
neglected guys, so do ev'rything you can. You owe a lot to your old
man!

(VERSE 1) You should always love your papa, treat him right and treat
him proper, 'cause without your father you would be nowhere. If he
hadn't wed your mother, would your brother be your brother? You can
thank your lucky stars that Dad was there.

(CHORUS) If it wasn't for your father would your mother be your mother?
So Remember Dad on Mothers Day.

(VERSE 2) If you look just like your father, and you think that's it's
a bother. 'cause he isn't handsome and he isn't tall. If your face
makes you unhappy, do not blame it on your pappy, 'cause without him
you would have no face at all!

(CHORUS)

(VERSE 3) If your pa lived in Dakota and your ma in Minnesota, and
they both were wed, but not to one another; then it's possible that
Mister you could even be your sister, and that guy you think you are
might be your brother.

(CHORUS)

(VERSE 4) If he'd been a little stronger and held out a little longer,
then today he still might be a single guy. Then it's safe to be
assumin' that you would not be a human; you would only be a gleam in
Mother's eye.

(TAG) So be grateful to your pappy; make him happy. Once again I'd
like to say: If it wasn't for your father would your mother be your
mother? So remember Dad on Mothers Day, and don't forget it. Remember
Dad on Mothers Day, you won't regret it! Remember Dad on Mothers Day.
Mothers Day!

What about a 75th anniversary CD/DVD? I have the one with the champs from
'39-'76 ( and OC Cash's quartet). Include all the champs (with visual
performances when possible). I know this isn't a chapter thing, but I'm guessing
that members who have been around only a third of that time (not to mention the
rest of us) would appreciate and enjoy a year-by-year journey of the society's
rich history, and get to hear the changes over the decades. A photo album
inclusion might be a nice touch. For say, $75.00?  What do you say, BHS?

Dave originally arranged it for the South Bay Coastliners where most of the
first Florida Dapper Dans (including Bub Thomas) came from. I remember singing
it with the chorus back in the late 60's.

The source was a recording by Dorothy Shay (the Park Avenue Hillbilly).

It's a real song. Dorothy Shay was (in)famous for singing comedy songs of this
nature ("Feudin' & Fightin'" was her biggest hit).

As far as I know, Dave Briner has been the only one to arrange it.... so contact
him!

So, is this a parody of another song, or a song unto itself? Where would one
find an arrangement?

Dave originally arranged it for the South Bay Coastliners where most of the
first Florida Dapper Dans (including Bub Thomas) came from. I remember singing
it with the chorus back in the late 60's.

The source was a recording by Dorothy Shay (the Park Avenue Hillbilly).

When time becomes a factor and the gates are well in view
Will you be asked to enter in and thus be saved,
Will the reaper make a visit so to have his way with you
And therefore judge you for the way that you behaved.

Will the pain of your departure resurrect some memories
That bring to mind the rights and wrongs like a charade,
Will there be a pleasing balance to be found in each of these
Or will there be some inconsistencies displayed.

Are you ready to confess to all the improprieties
That were committed during phases of your life,
Were there moments heaven’s righteousness would bless the best of these
And would relieve your apprehensive world of strife.

If the gates will not be opened as you stand before the prince
With conscious hope that you would be exonerated,
If faulty living caused a lovely angel face to wince
And all your many hopes would not be consecrated.

With oh so many trials to be faced when growing up
There may be moments that were never wishful deeds,
Tripping over miseries that often fill your cup
With anxious moments with the hope that you succeed.

When time becomes a factor and there’s little of it left
And you are faced with pain and misery acute,
The hope for abrogation seems to have a lot of heft
That only heaven’s arbitration could refute.

The key to heaven’s golden gates is hanging on the post
And can be reached if you have lived a righteous life,
The guardians that cast a watchful eye will be the host
That often cut the crimson tape with love that’s rife.

To understand the world of heaven’s righteous confirmation
There will always be a place for someone new,
Deciding if their worthiness should reap emancipation
Allowing all the kindly mothers to pass through.

As a 25 year (retired) veteran of barbershopping, I have received more than my
fair share of musical knowledge. I was fortunate to have eight of my best years
singing under and learning from Earl Moon and have a very large space in my
heart for barbershop. I am now putting together a piece for my grandchildren and
I to play but have come across a huge roadblock and am hoping one of you
arrangers can give me some help. In going from the key of GM (Jay Wright's
"Today") to the key of BbM ("Tomorrow" from "Annie"), I can't seem to find the
right chords to make a smooth transition. I know just enough to get me in
trouble (circle of fifth's, etc.) and realize it should go from G-C-F-Bb, but I
just can't put together either the right chords and/or voicing. Any help you
great arrangers can give would be mightily appreciated by both me and my
grandkids. Thank you.

Dear Barbershoppers,

When I was at Harmony College around 1980 (+/-) we were issued a song that we
all sang in one of the Assemblies, entitled:

"Dad, You Have Been a Mother To Me" (or words to that effect),

about a Father who raised his kids after his wife had died.

It was so heart-wrenching that I observed strapping, 6-foot tall, men around me
with handkerchiefs out, blowing their noses and wiping their eyes.  I know I
had trouble singing around the lump in my own throat, myself.

I haven't heard that song sung since then, and I can understand why, since it is
so emotional that few barbershoppers could sing it without choking up.

Perhaps someone on Harmonet can remember that song, and if so, it would be my
nomination for a song to "Fathers on Mothers Day".

In Love and Harmony,

Bob Dunn

Actually, this _does_ sound interesting,
and educational. I'm sure there will be
more than one idea how to do this and it
could lead to some interesting "'shop"
talk. I don't mind if you keep it
"on-list".

There is also a Harry Ruby song that Groucho Marx used to sing entitled
Father's Day that goes like this:

Today, father, is Father's Day
And we're giving you this tie
It's not very much, it is just our way of showing you
we think you're a regular guy
You say that it was nice of us to bother
but it really was a pleasure to fuss
for, according to our mother, you're our Father,
And that's good enough for us, yes, that's good enough for us!

Not quite the tear-jerker that Daddy You've Been a Mother To Me is,
tho...:-)

In a case like that, when you're changing from one key into another, you
don't really need to go around the circle of 5ths to the new key.
Mainly, you need to establish the V7 chord in the new key. A V7 chord
establishes the tonality unambiguously, since both the 3rd and the 7th
are not both diatonic in any other tonality. You can go directly to the
V7 of the new key, but one of the devices often used is a common tone.
Since the chord you want, F7, is composed of F, A, C, Eb, one approach
might be to have a D7 (V7) chord in the old key, have the lead on A or
C, and have that note maintained while the harmony around it changes to F7.

HI all:

Here is a flyer that explains the 2012 Ben's Bash....probably the longest
running "Barbershop Party" in the Mid Atlantic District. All
barbershoppers afe invited to enjoy an incredible evening of singing,
fellowship and liquid libations with fellow barbershoppers from around the
District. If you have a quartet, you are invited to come and entertain the
crowd.

Many of you old timers will remember the years when Ben Ackerman had his
Party at the Farcher's Grove German Hall in Union....sometimes as many as
250-300 men enjoying a great evening of barbershop harmony and better
barbershop fellowship.

Chapter choruses are invited to attend and perform....pick up quartets are
encouraged and can also perform. The admission price of $5.00 includes
beer and snacks. Be prepared to buy 50-50 tickets which will cover the
costs of providing the place and the refreshments. The winner two years
ago won more than $250.00.

To quartetters in the Greater San Diego area: Patio Playhouse of Escondido is
auditioning for a production of "The Music Man". I agreed to be the
"Second-Assistant Flunky to the Music Director", in charge of training the
barbershop quartet, so I'm trying very hard to get real barbershoppers with
quartet experience to audition.

It would be great to get an organized quartet, but I'd be happy just to get four
experienced quartetters. I can't be in it myself, because I'll be out of town
during part of the play's run, but I'll be the primary quartet coach.

Theater experience would be a plus, since you'll have lines that must be
delivered with conviction, and you'll be in several scenes. You'll be playing
the "school board", which gives us some flexibility age-wise, but we do need
people who look like adults. It's in an outdoor amphitheater, so ya gotta be
able to play it big, at least facially.

This is very short notice (sorry!). Auditions start at 7:00 PM on Sunday and
Monday, May 20 and 21, with callbacks on May 23.

Please contact me (garsinger<at>yahoo<dot>com -- substitute the "@" and "."
where appropriate) if at all interested. A brief summary of your quartet and
other stage experience would be appreciated, and whether you're auditioning as a
quartet. I don't have the final say as to whom they cast, but they were
agreeable to casting experienced quartetters who also have basic theatrical
acting skills.

The performance dates are August 3-4, 9-11, 16-18, and 23-25.

Please save me from having to try to teach four soloists how to ring barbershop
chords!

Hello folks …

I have just transferred my domain name bbsmusic.com to
GoDaddy and discovered to my dismay that the link to my website pulls up a page
that advertises pornography. I will be closing my account with GoDaddy and
transferring my domain to another host ASAP. Meanwhile, please accept my
apology.

Thanks … Joe
