I recently down loaded QuickTime 4.1.2 from a web site. I installed it
per the instructions. Now, when I rebuild my desk top, I get a message that
the installation was somehow incomplete and the "Music Note Allocator" is
missing. I went to the "check" site, and the blue (QT)logo came up, but when
I clicked on "continue" it showed a broken plug in. I went further and saw
that the blue QT logo was "animated" indicating everything was OK. Since I
use my computer to compose and/or arrange Barbershop music (as well as
instrumental music) I am concerned that it will not work properly.

I also notice that the old extension icons (Musical Instruments, etc.) have
been replaced by other icons. What's going on here?

Any private replies with assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Night Magic, SAI 2001 3rd Place International Quartet Medalists sang in a
First Night celebration in Doylestown, Pa last night.
For those unfamiliar, First Night is a non-alcoholic New Year's celebration
held usually in "small" town areas. Citizens buy buttons that permit their
entrance into all venues of entertainment. That entertainment can range from
magicians and face painters to big bands and barbershop quartets. We sang in
a museum this time.
Night Magic has been involved in this type of celebration three times now and
all have been enjoyable. You get a chance to try new material and the
audience is appreciative and the atmosphere very festive.
We usually meet beforehand for a nice dinner with our spouses then off to
sing. A great chance to socialize together and ring in the New Year .
If you ever get the chance to participate in one of these activites, take it.
You will love it.

Happy New Year to all

Harmonetters and barbershop harmony lovers worldwide,

My Michigan Jake CD arrived quietly at my home via USPS this week
while I worked out of town 100 miles away in Northern Virginia. I've
been anticipating the delivery as much as any of my Christmas
presents including that wonderful GHG Christmas CD.

Ladies and gentlemen, THIS is a CD you will want in your collection.
I could pay it no better compliment than to say the recordings are
"classic" Michigan Jake. It contains the songs we love to hear them
sing, not the least of which is that fantastic "Dinah" they debuted
in KC. Jake gives a lesson in how to compile a recording of
fantastic barbershop harmonies. I expect the MJ CD is one that ALL
barbershoppers will love.

"For The Record", it's a keeper.

The HGTV coverage of the parade repeats tonight at 8:00 in the east
(with commercial breaks added). The barbershop float should be on
between 9:45 and 10:30. Incidentally, the quartet song heard in the
background on HGTV during the coverage was Coney Island Baby by the
SunTones.

----------------------------------------

Description from the www.HGTV.com web site:

Sponsor/Participant: Burbank Tournament of Roses (#86)
Float Theme: The All American Barbershop Quartet

A bald eagle, a grizzly bear, an all-American mutt and a turkey form a
quartet that sings barbershop songs. Wearing matching vests and sporting
canes and straw hats, the characters stand between poles of spinning
red-and-white stripes. Residents of the Burbank area, through the
Backyards of Burbank program, as it has been known since 1993, have once
again donated homegrown flowers to the float.

The barbershop quartet began in the 19th century; today, members make up
the largest all-male singing society in the world. Their female
counterparts? Sweet Adelines.

Having been alerted (thanks) that the float would be 8th from last, I was
timing how long each channel was giving each float (about 1.5 - 2 minutes),
on various channels. After Gator Bowl took away NBC coverage of the
Parade, it was down to ABC and CBS. ABC missed it pretty completely, but
CBS did well.

Yes, there was a wonderful float in the Rose Parade which I watched
on TV the "All American Barbershop Quartet". See Phil Richards
announcing message below. Thanks Phil.

What interested me was the choice of the Suntone's Public Domain
album for the music: "A Touch Of Old". This is #185 in my
"Harmony Record Guide" booklet. During the broadcast segment
I viewed, they sang Coney Island Baby and Daisy Bell. Not only
did they record the album but they issued a song folio of the
arrangements, both of which I have in the Harmony Archive.

The fabulous Suntones are my all-time favorite Gold Medalists
for not only recording more albums than any other quartet, but for
truly Preserving the classic close harmony songs of the early
20th century. Truly a class act. Thank you Suntones.

And thank you Burbank and all the volunteers who decorated this
beautiful float (barbershoppers as I hear). I am glad to see
our hobby back in the public view, and Public Domain.

Casey Parker, K.I.B.I.Q.

PS - A photo of this float should be on the cover of the Harmonizer.
From another post "The Channelaire Chorus will have the 8th place
Region 11 quartet RHYTHM RASCALS on this float." Thanks ladies.

Watch for the Burbank, CA float, entitled, "The All-American Barbershop
Quartet", tomorrow morning.

The float is the 8th from the END of the parade tomorrow, so watch for
it. It was my first time seeing one of these magnificent floats up
close, and I can tell you that TV doesn't begin to do them justice.
There are 4 all-American characters on the float -- a bald eagle, a
bear, a dog and a turkey -- all dressed in "sequined" vests and straw
hats, carrying canes and wearing big mustaches. The detailing was
incredible. For example, the bear's eyes were made with split peas --
each pea was individually glued on, which took 23 hours just for the 2
eyes alone.

The float features the music of the well-known men's barbershop
champions, the Suntones. The float designer worked closely with
SPEBSQSA to obtain the music -- they chose all public domain songs so
they didn't have to pay royalties, and got permission from all 4 members
of the Suntones to use the music for free.

The Barbershop Quartet float was viewed in the Chicago area with coverage
on three channels. Our Hispanic channel (3) gave it the longest coverage
(close to three minutes). Besides the songs already mentioned, we also
heard "Shine On Harvest Moon" as we clicked back and forth from CBS to ABC
to the The audio was very clear and the voice-over did not step on much of
the music. I just wish my Spanish was better so I could have understood
the commentators reaction to the float and the music.

We've been watching the Rose parade and really enjoyed the Barbershop
float!!!!! We watched it on KTLA Channel 5 and they really focused on the
float and we got to hear a good portion of the singing. It was wonderful!!!
Nice and clear and the announcers actually shut up long enough for us to hear
them. The four animals on the float were so beautiful!!!! Thanks to all who
put that float together and thanks to the Suntones Quartet for allowing their
songs to be performed on the float. You guys are great!!!! P.S. My kids
love it too!!!!

Just a thought while reading an interesting article in today's Washington
Post on the Philadelphia institution known as the "Mummers". Those not
familiar can stop reading here, because no further explanation will be
provided.

Couldn't help but notice many similarities between this organization and
barbershoppers; namely both are volunteer in nature, require significant
time committments, define explantion to those who don't participate, etc.
and create an almost fanatical devotion among their members.

This article seemed to indicate that membership is better than ever, as they
celebrate their 100th year. Wondered if any of our Phila. area brethren may
have insight as to their success and would like to know if any of their
techniques would be applicable at the chapter level.

Thanks.

Jeff: Having been born and reared in Phila, I can give you some insight
on the Mummers. First it is a family thing. It is not uncommon to have
three generations in one club, now including women. Allowing women to
participate is comparatively recent. As a matter of fact, half of the
clubs still will not accept women. They are fanatical in their loyalty
and much the same in their membership makeup. All economic and
occupational levels are represented. The majority of the clubs compete
in the parade on New Years Day regardless of the severity of the weather.
Many start as little kids and continue into their seventies. They all
have well established organizations, club houses (with bars) and most
belong to an umbrella organization called the New Years Shooters
Association who makes the rules under which they compete. They speak for
the groups and coordinate their city activities. In addition to bragging
rights, the competition is for prize money, but the amount of money for
the most part doesn't cover one tenth of the cost of costumes (which are
very expensive), props etc. In the last Ten or Fifteen years they have
started a Best of Mummers Show at Convention Hall and splitting the
profits with the member clubs. They also record these performances and
sell tapes. Each indidual band hires themselves out for entertainment in
the area and charge a bundle for performing. Many organizations and
municipalities have been badly burned by some of them when they pay big
bucks expecting a full band in great costumes and have them show up in
last years outfits and very small numbers. My own township, who in the
past, had hired my chorus for a holiday celebration, was badly
disappointed when twelve people showed up to march. They paid them the
same amount ($ 1000) as they paid my chorus who put forty men on the
risers. This may not be the norm but I think it might be. We had an
association with one of the bigger clubs several years ago and it was
fun. We visited them and were treated royally and we reciprocated a
short time later. We considered having them on one of our shows, but
rejected the idea when they insisted we invite them and their spouses to
the Afterglow gratis. That would have severely hurt our profits so we
decided against it. As I said earlier there are similarities in our
hobbies. It is a Phila institution and I guess they are healthy
membership wise is their strong family attraction. Back in the old days,
the women made all the costumes, now most are purchased commercially.
Their family members still strongly support the groups. The string bands
have a very unique sound having stringed instruments and no brass
allowed. For the most part they play our kind of music and I love it.
The viewpoints expressed our mine and I may not have all the facts
exactly right. but that is the way I see it. I hope that helps you
understand their hobby, read lifestyle.

A few day ago Jade Walker questioned, how to do a glissando. I responded in
jest but recently came up on this article in a bulletin of the Medford OR
Chapter, Rogue Rhapsody. It was written by Brian Beck, who needs little
introduction. Thought everyone would appreciate the article;
In Harmony
Jack Martin

Glissando: a rapid sliding up or down the musical scale
This is basically a Vocal Majority technique. If you have one part that
glisses, say a third, and one part glisses a sixth, you'd want to do a
couple of things; (1) have each section gliss the notes together by
themselves to give all leads, say, the feel for how long it takes. In other
words, the leads are glissing at the same time now, and the note is "in
tune" throughout the gliss, and in the "real" time frame that it's going to
take. Ditto for the other part.
I would recommend each part start at the same time. Talk about how the part
with the longest way to go takes longer to get there, the gliss will be
slower, but you start and arrive at the same time. From an arrangement
standpoint, it's better to have glisses that are relatively the same
distance, like the "famous" gliss (I wrote it myself, although certainly not
the first to do it) in the Rich-Tones version of "I'm Alone Because I Love
You” (yes,
the Boston Common did it first!). More or less a third for each part, tenor
and bass. But if you have uneven spaces, the above is what I would do. Hope
this helps.
[This came from the Harmonet in response to a question about how best to
handle Glissandos. Here is an opportunity to make use of duetting to enable
the various parts to hear what is going on and what they need to do to stay
in tune as they gliss.]

I should point out that Brian posted his article directly to
HarmonetLite, which was apparently then picked up by the Medford bulletin
editor.

I try to forward good HarmonetLite articles back to the main Harmonet,
but I don't always succeed...it's sometimes not obvious that the article
was posted only to HarmonetLite, and not auto-forwarded from the

I don’t know if you’d call it a lifelong dream, but it’s certainly an
experience I’d wondered about before, and finally got to enjoy in 2000: I
was a contestant on Jeopardy! (Note: exclamation point is part of the
trademarked name, not hyperbolic punctuation. Take it at face value.)

On May 17, 2000, I auditioned in Chicago for the show, and was among 17
picked to appear from the 300 who tried out. On November 1, 2000, I taped
the show at Sony Picture Studios Los Angeles. It airs Wednesday, January 10,
2001.

Read the whole exciting tale: some “as it happened,” some after the fact.
Since the fun of the game is in seeing how it ends, I won’t ruin the

Dear BBShoppers,
I am posting the following message for a colleague who was informed

Please reply to him privately. He will be most appreciative! Thank

I am a choral director with a low frequency hearing loss, who has
tried to find an aid that allows me to make musical/balance
judgements. So far, the ones I have tried amplify my own voice and
those of the loudest singers nearest me, that I can't use them during
choral rehearsals. Does anyone know of a solution, or perhaps can
steer me to an audiologist who is a singer/choral director. Thanks.

Hi barbershoppers!

Just a few weeks left to sign up -- guess I'd better let those of
you on the Harmonet know (in case you haven't seen the ads in the
SPEBS District magazines.) A small group (probably about 80) will
be accompanying the Vocal Majority to Glasgow, Scotland, to take
part in the annual BABS Convention. This will simultaneously be
the first All-European Convention/Competition, with quartets and
choruses from Germany (BING), Holland (DABS), Ireland (IABS), and
Sweden (SNOBS). This will be May 3-7.

Then on Monday, May 7, our group -- plus Jim Clancy (director of
the Vocal Majority) and his wife Judy -- will take off for Ireland
and a week of sightseeing. Jim has never been to Ireland, so he's
really excited about it; we'll be sharing this discovery of the
Ireland of his ancestors. Of course, there will probably be 50 to
60 in the group who sing barbershop (SPEBS, BABS, SAI and HI), and
we'll have learned some barbershop arrangements so we can "burst
into song" at any opportunity. With Jim directing, this can only
be FUN! Our singing will be informal, but definitely frequent...
whenever the spirit moves us! Jim hasn't selected the music yet
(we are waiting for the final group makeup, so we know what we
have to work with), but it's sure to include some really easy
standard barbershop songs, plus a few Irish tunes.

There are a lot more details are on the MHBQA website (check out
the NEWS ON UPCOMING EVENTS secton) at:

			 http://arneberg.com/bbshop/mhbqa

The nuts and bolts:

Option 1-- May 3-13, 2001 BABS CONVENTION (Glasgow) for May 4-7,
IRELAND WITH JIM CLANCY for May 7-13. Departs USA May 3, arrives
Glasgow May 4. All costs covered for BABS Convention except
meals. Ireland May 7-13, all costs covered except lunch and
dinners. Fly home from Shannon, Ireland, on May 13. Total price:
$2689 per person from San Francisco or Los Angeles, but slightly
less if from closer airports (all air included in price.)

Option 2-- (for Vocal Majority members, or those flying to the
Convention with them) May 7-13. IRELAND ONLY. Includes same
things in Ireland as option 1, plus transportation Glasgow to
Ireland. Ground tour ends in Shannon, Ireland; return flight to
be coordinated with VM package. Total price: $1,499 per person.

For more info, see the website or contact me (Kim Orloff) at
korloff@... -- I'll forward the inquiry to Jerry. (Don't
try to email Jerry directly -- his computer has been disabled

Calling all quartets in Northern California!!! Well
ok, only the male barbershop quartets...

The First Annual Northern California High School
Quartet Contest will be held in conjunction with the
NorCAL Novice Quartet Contest on February 24, 2001.
This is a warm-up contest for the District High School
Quartet Contest.

Registration is free for all high school competitors.
The winning quartet's school will receive $400 for
their music program. All quartets will receive nearly
two hours of coaching - FREE!!!

What, you're not between the ages of 13 to 19? That's
ok, we have a contest for you too. Walnut Creek has
graciously loaned the NorCAL Novice Quartet Contest to
help offset the cost of the High School Contest.
Novice quartet entrance fee is $20 per quartet.

What you don't sing? Well you can come and listen.
It only costs $5 to get in the door. What a deal!
I'm sure the competitors will appreciate a LARGE
audience to sing for, plus it will help pay for the
event... Doors open at 6:30pm. Seating is limited,
so get there early.

The singing starts at 7pm, so don't be late.

For more information eMail me, Ed Bejarana, at bbsbari@....

Please make your responses public. Hearing loss is far too frequent
among barbershoppers and any knowledge will be useful to many.

Now in response to John Witmer's request, I will post it here to the bbshop

Here is some information that was listed on Choralist (part of ChoralNet).
It should be helpful. You might also try to contact Tom Cleveland at
Vanderbilt University. Tom has taught classes for choral directors at many
conferences, and is virtually one of the foremost experts on the subject. He
was also a contemporary and friend of Tom Shipp, well known barbershopper.
Hope this helps some.

Dear BBshoppers,
I am posting the following message for a colleague. Please reply to
him privately. He will be most appreciative! Thank you. Barb Conroy

I am a choral director with a low frequency hearing loss, who has
tried to find an aid that allows me to make musical/balance
judgments. So far, the ones I have tried amplify my own
voice and those of the loudest singers nearest me, that I can't use
them during choral rehearsals. Does anyone know of a solution, or
perhaps can steer me to an audiologist who is a singer/choral
director. Thanks.

Subject: Singing with hearing aid(s)

----------------------------------

Just spoke to my hubby-- an ENT doc--we also have an audiologist on
staff for his private practice and hearing aide business, so he deals
with these questions on a daily basis. He said a digital/programmable
HA. The digital will give the best overall sound and with the
programmable feature, the HA can be programmed
for different hearing situations--the best you do if you need a hearing
aide.

----------------------------------

I started wearing digital hearing aids in August, and I'm still adapting to
them. I don't believe that any hearing aid available will allow you to
hear your own voice naturally. In fact, your own voice is emphasized
because you are hearing it both through the hearing aid and through bone
conduction. The result is a lot like your perception of your own voice
when you have a really bad cold and are all stuffed up. On the other hand,
of course, nobody EVER hears their own voice the same way other people do,
because part of what you're hearing is through bone and tissue conduction.
For a singer, it's necessary to judge what you are doing more by feeling
than by listening--but of course that's how a singer should be operating
anyway.

Pitch is definitely not a problem. But matching pitch exactly and blending
well might take lots of getting used to, simply because you hear yourself
more than you are used to. You definitely perceive the sounds of music
differently than without the aids. On the other hand, I'm sure that the
"natural" way I hear music without the aids is not the same as other
people's perception, since I have a moderately severe high frequency loss.
I do hear some instruments differently, simply because their place in the
sound spectrum happens to coincide with frequencies that are being
emphasized in my prescription. (Snare drums are nasty!!)

The advantage of the digital--and the reason I sprang for the very high
price--is that it is an active mechanism. Essentially I'm wearing a 40
megahertz computer in each ear. It samples the incoming sound 40 million
times a second, makes decisions about that sound, and adjusts its own
response accordingly. There is a limiter (also known as a compressor)
circuit that brings down the amplification if I am getting background noise
loud enough to trigger it. I need to have that adjusted at the moment,
because it interprets concert applause and other sounds like running water
as dangerous and kicks in! But of course the real advantage of digital
aids is that they CAN be adjusted. The cheapest kind simply amplify
everything equally. The programmable kind can be set to your own
prescription, but are stuck at that setting. Programmable ones that can
switch between 2 or 3 programs for different auditory environments can be a
very good choice for some people, but cost almost as much as the more
flexible digital ones.

As for advice, make sure that the practitioner your choir member works with
understands that music is important in his or her life. Their primary
mindset is to make speech intelligible over background noise. Music is a
whole different ballgame.

All my best to your singer. Things will be different but not necessarily
worse. It's amazing what we can adjust to and come to use without even
thinking about it.

----------------------------------

I forwarded your e-mail to my brother, John Wright, who is head of audiology
at Children's Hospital in Birmingham Alabama. His response follows. After
looking at it, I'm not sure it completely answers your question, but maybe
it helps.

Clell,
In answer to your question - if the question is simply which is better for
music appreciate, analog vs. digital, then digital is obviously the answer.
I
am of the opinion that digital hearing aids are always the way to go now.
The quality of sound is so superior in digital products versus analog that
there really is no comparison. Another advantage of the digital hearing
aids
is that the hearing aid automatically samples the incoming sound hundreds of
time per second, filters out noise from speech spectrum and digitally
optimizes your listening environment.

If you are looking at what kind of digital hearing, well that is pretty
broad. There are several excellent companies out there and several
different
kinds of hearing aids. That would take finding a reputable audiologist with
experience in digital hearing aids for a hearing aid consultation. The
audiologist would need to interview the person to see what his listening
habits are and they would work together to fine tune the hearing aid.

Bottom line - digital hearing aids are definitely the route to go.

Hope this helps.

Stay in touch.

Dear Bob:
I have taught music for 27 years and have had hearing aids for over 20 of
them. I have tried single aids, binaural aids, analog, analog with tone
controls, and digital inner ear. The best ones have been the ones I have now
but they were very expensive. They are not totally digital and are the small
inner canal type. I have them in both ears. The only draw back has been when
trying to perform with a pre-recorded tape. I need the tape very loud to be
able to hear over the sound of my voice that is ALSO amplified by the
hearing
aids. Regular accompaniment poses the same problem but on a much smaller
scale. Does that help a bit? My first ones were Miracle Ear but they have
really started cutting corners in quality and I do not believe insurance is
accepted by them.

Sincerely,

This is spectacular. You will not be disappointed. As a matter of
fact, I would be shocked if you weren't thrilled beyond your wildest
dreams. This cd is awesome. To give you a comparison...it reminds
me of BSU's Gershwin recording. Great singing, great arrangements,
great musicality, simply put . . . holy cow!!

Anyway, buy it.

OOPS!
Doug Harrington kindly wrote (regarding my post on the trip with Jim
Clancy to the BABS/European Convention & Contest in Glasgow, and the
following week's tour of Ireland:
    ------------------------------------------------
Hi Kim! Just to be correct, this will actually be the THIRD All
European Barbershop Convention and Contest. The first one was in
Herning, Denmark in the mid 90's, the second in Stockholm in the fall
of 1998 (which was actually a convention for men AND women with
chorus and quartet contests for both) and the upcoming one being held
    in Glasgow.
... I'm pretty sure that's the way it is. Anyway, I am absolutely
certain about the convention in Stockholm in 1998 because my chapter
hosted it. If any of you European barbershoppers out there see that
I have got some information wrong, please correct me.
	 In Harmony,
	 Doug Harrington,
	 Co-Director of The Entertainmen
	 Rönninge, Sweden
     --------------------------------------------------
Thanks for the correction, Doug! And apologies to all of my good
friends in Ronninge... I had a mental lapse, and was erroneously lumping
the UK in with Europe... arrrgh! Would I be correct in saying that it is
the first combined British and European competition? (I know that there
were visiting choruses and quartets last year at the BABS convention, but
no competition. Were British quartets / choruses competing at the 1998
Convention in Stockholm, or was it strictly European?)

Anyway, whatever it is, it's going to be a real barn-burner!

Again, my apologies to all of my European friends out there... the
brain cells took a momentary vacation!
