Hey everyone.

I just got my copy of Riptide's "Wonderful World". By the way, it got here
about a week sooner than they said it would...awesome guys!

Let me sum it up in one word....Smooth!

Wonderful sound. Wonderful blend. And so on. Just all the things we have
come to expect from those guys.

One of these days if someone could teach EK to sing tenor, I would really
appreciate it....

Great job guys! And to think...I didn't miss out on this one!

here's what we wrote in our review:

"Rip" is the operative word here! This men's quartet could give "lock and
ring" lessons - "Put Me To Sleep" does anything but, there's a golden
overtone shining at the close of "Apple Blossom Time," and the
"Chordbusters March" should be led by these guys! Then they jazz up "Misty"
with women's quartet Crystal Clear - wow!! So get yours and let it rip!

Dear Brother Quartetters on the Harmonette (others ignore)

This is the periodic call for email replies with stories of successful
integration of quartetting in the chapter meeting. Would it be impolite
of me to say that the pressure of chorus rehearsing squeezes out the
opportunity for members, especially newbies, to enjoy singing with
just three other guys, at meetings? Let me tell you a true story.

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a Chapter known far and wide to be a hotbed
of quartetting. You could come to any meeting and you would be
immediately put in a quartet with three experienced quartetters.
You would be given help singing your part, and honored by being
encouraged to perform for the rest of the chapter, often on your very
first visit. Annual shows were called Parade of Quartets, where nearly
every quartet was from the home chapter, like 12 (hmm 12 x 4 = 48).

Then some administrators (ex-glee clubbers) and competition-advocates
(ex-jocks) joined. The adminstrators said your Parade of Quartets is
boring, what you need is a BIG DANCING CHORUS to bring in big bucks.
The ex-jocks said you are losing contests -
"Winning isn't the only thing, it's everything!".
What you need is THREE HOURS OF RISER DANCING DRILL every week to win
contests. Besides that, you're having entirely too much fun in quartets.
In time, nearly every long-time experienced quartetter quit ...
except one noisy one.

Oh yes, they tried to ignore him, but that's another story. Gradually
the ex-jocks fell out of power and the adminstrators went on to other
challenges. The nagging voice of this lone quartetting advocate
finally struck a chord with a new Music VP. He started a program of
randomly creating a quartet, by drawing names from hats at every
meeting, to sing two songs three weeks hence. Now every week they have
a quartet sing for the chapter, and ultimately every member gets a
chance to sing in a quartet.

And they went on quartetting HAPPILY EVER AFTER ...
End of story.

Now, YOU send in YOUR success story on how YOUR chapter Preserves and
Encourages Quarteting in YOUR chapter meeting. Our publishing
deadline for the March GUBOQS Gazette is February 20, 2001. Be famous.

Thank you for your email reply (in the body of the message) addressed

Editor's note: A while back, several Harmonetters requested that we
forward good HarmonetLite posts back to the main Harmonet, if they did
were sent directly to HarmonetLite. (That way, people could read only
the main Harmonet and not miss anything.)

Here is a slightly different case, though -- this one was forwarded to
HarmonetLite from a different list, SPEBSQSA_YMIH. My question is,
would those people want me to forward (to the main Harmonet) posts like
this, that appeared on HarmonetLite but originated on a third list?

(Currently, HarmonetLite gets selected posts from five different
barbershop mailing lists: bbshop, bbshopwebguild, bbshopmembership,
BarbershopPR, and SPEBSQSA_YMIH.)

Let me know if you would like or not like this, and I will proceed
accordingly in the future.

Thanks for the kind words, Jason. This festival has created quite
a stir among choral music educators in this area. It's going to
be a lot of fun for everyone.

In California, we have had some very active involvement with
state-wide relationships. In March of 1999, Bill Rashleigh gave
a 90-minute presentation of the Barbershop Style to about 60 choral
music educators attending the California Music Educators Association
Convention. A few months ago, a representative called me to see if
we would offer that presentation again. It turns out that Bill R.
will be in Southern California for our Youth Harmony Festival on
March 3, and he'll stay on to give the presentation at this year's
CMEA Convention later that week. The Far Western District will
also have a booth in the exhibit area of the convention, staffed
by members of our district YMIH committee. The Kenosha Music Staff
will provide about 100 of the new "Music Educators Kits" for us to
distribute at that booth to convention attendees who wish to learn
more about the barbershop style.

More significantly, we just received a request from choral director
who serves on the Executive Board of the California ACDA chapter to
give a similar presentation at their summer convention in early
August (immediately after Harmony College). As everyone knows, it's
been a real challenge to break into ACDA. Hopefully, we will begin
to build some awareness from this activity that will spread throughout
the national ACDA organization.

I believe that all of these positive results come from the past six
years of providing financial support (refer to my post a few months
ago about our "Cash Grant" program) and performance opportunites that
local chapters have provided for young people (including the fabulous
performance by 65 high school guys at the Anaheim Convention. It's
a painfully slow process to build and nurture these relationships
and programs, but it's certainly worth the effort in the long-run.

Please let us hear about other success stories. I'm particularly
interested in hearing about what's happening outside the United
States. Thanks for everyone's wonderful work with this important
program.

Our chapter started using eGroups a few months ago after I heard about it
from the Harmonet. Well now just as I am starting to want to us some of it's
features other than email (the files, the database, the chat), my members
will be required to sign up with Yahoo to access it. Well, I'm a Yahoo user
so doesn't bother me. But some other members don't want to provide Yahoo all
the info they require such as birthdate and zip code. So now, eGroups (sorry
Yahoo Groups) is useless as a tool since some of my chapter members will not
be able to access it.

Unless someone knows of a way to get a Yahoo ID without providing all their
"required" information. Has anyone else received complaints from chapter
members about the recent conversion and being forced to get a Yahoo ID?

I have a problem with this as well, though none of our members have
complained (yet) because most of them just use email and don't need
to access the website at all. I had to register just to perform
list admin functions, of course the email to all list moderators
came out AFTER the change took effect which was useless.

In any case, if anyone has qualms about providing their birthday or
occupation, they could just make one up. It's not as if anyone has
to provide any actual information about themselves if they don't want
to, they can be whoever they want to be. Personally I would recommend
this, wish I had thought of it before I registered!

Gentlemen;

Thank you for your many comments supportive of restoring quartetting
to it's proper priority via Long Range Planning. I have forwarded
these great comments to our District President for action.

Let me re-cap some of the programs we have initiated for local
chapter implementation:

Lucky Draw Quartet Program: Every week a quartet sings which has been
selected at random from the membership (one from each voice part),
three weeks prior. A coach is selected also to help prepare them
to sing the two songs of their choosing in a proper manner. Simple
costumes and a quartet name are chosen.

Fifth-Meeting Quartet Program: In those months having a five meeting
nights, there will be a quartet night program. Four times a year, on
these firm dates (confirmed by the Board), a series of quartet activities
are activated to involve all members in quartet singing. This can be
tailored to emphasize show songs or contest songs as appropriate. Tag-in
quartets, line-up quartets, old-new octets, and coaching are options.

Thank you for your attention. Work with your Quartet Promoter and
your Program VP to implement these programs. Let me know the results.

Casey Parker, quartet advocate

FAQ's (Tuesday as an example)
1. Q: Why have a Fifth Tuesday Quartet Program? (FTQP)
A: We are Quartet Society, and having 4 quartet programs a year to
support quartetting is a minimum. In that month we have alreaday had
four 3-hour chorus rehearsals. It is fully supported by the 2001 Board.
Sorry, it is not a waste of time, it's our Society objective
2. Q: Why not drop FTQP and just have a little quartetting every week?
A: We have a weekly quartet activity, the Lucky Draw Quartet Program.
It is extra work for the Program VP to line up additional quartet activities
and still satisfy the Chorus leadership. Four separate FTQP's allows us
to focus on quartetting to give a positive quartet esperience, allowing
members to graduate from the risers to singing with just three other guys.
3. Q: Doesn't quartetting bore the listeners say, when four are singing and
50 are listening?
A: Hello, we all love barberhop harmony, right? Maybe we ought to
learn "Constructive Listening". How about giving the singers constructive
suggestions - Here's an idea - have the members of a section write down
comments of their section-mate who is singing. Also, we have had 14 hours
of chorus singing this month, maybe a break to refresh is appropriate.
4. Q: Can't we postpone the FTQP 'til after the show, contest, etc. etc.
A: No. The Gregorian calendar we use predicted the Fifth Tuesdays in
year 2001 several centuries ago, so they are hardly a surprise. The Board
was reminded of them months ago and approved the four FTQP's and placed them
on the Chapter Calendar. This was presented to the chapter on 1/23/01.
Postponment is not an option. There will always be reasons, but our
Society priority is quartet preservation - read your membership card.

Recently someone inquired about a Mel Torme hit "THAT'S ALL".
I located it ('52, Brandt & Haymes). This is a "chord spelling"
song. I look at the chord sequence to judge the
"barbershopability". "I can only give you love that lasts forever ..."
C, C7, C, G7, Em7, A7, Dmn7, G7, Am7, D9, Dm7, F#dim, Em7, A7,D7-5, G7
Whattayathink?

It's a nice love song of the 'I can't give you anything but love'
genre, but I don't think it's a good contest vehicle, IMHO.

Hello everyone!

Well, I have good news, and bad news. The good news is that the starting the
week of the 12th, my show will have a more "permanent" home until early June
(such is the beast that is small college radio). The bad news - I will not be
on the air next week while that schedule is worked out and some transmitter
repair takes place. Again, many thanks to all who have donated their CDs to the
show; this week I had new CDs from Boyz Nite Out (Rho Sham Bo), and Bara Vox
(We're Going up). Also, _extreme_ thanks go out to Eugene Rocha of BNO, who
recorded a custom Legal ID for the show. Sounds, great, Eugene! Once I get
back on the air, I expect to have many new CDs. "On deck" currently are The
Magnets, and the Iowa St. Shaggy Boys, and I've been promised some Interstate
Rivals, Marquis, and Keepsake.

      * = New Music    % = Special Feature.

So, here's the playlist for Tuesday night, 1/30/01, from 7:15pm to 9:15pm....

Acoustix - Star Spangled Banner - Stars & Stripes
Acoustix - Stars & Stripes Forever - Stars & Stripes

Vox One - Gone By - Out There
M-Pact - Got a Friend? - It's All About Harmony
M-Pact - 29 Ways - It's All About Harmony

Five O'Clock Shadow - If You Could Only See - So There
U Penn Off the Beat - Don't Stand So Close to Me - BOCA '99
Brown Jabberwocks - 7 - BOCA 1
Amherst Zumbuyes - Rock With You - BOCA 2
& Extended ICCA Promo over Bela Fleck "Left of Cool" &
  * Boyz Nite Out - Crazy - Rho Sham Bo *
  * Boyz Nite Out - Baby Doll - Rho Sham Bo *
  * Boyz Nite Out - I Wanna Be Your Baby Tonite - Rho Sham Bo *
Tiffin Up In the Air - Step Off - Volume-One
DaVinci's Notebook - Ally McBeal - The Life & Times of Mike Fanning

Excalibur - Atlanta's Jumpin' - Unforgettable
City Lights - I Love to Hear that Old Barbershop Style - Sophisticated Swing
Gas House Gang - Strike Up The Band Medley - CARAs '97
Signature Sound - Orange Colored Sky - Caught in the Act

House Jacks - Gone - Naked Noise
Five O'Clock Shadow - Tribute - So There
Acoustix - God Bless America - Stars & Stripes
House Jacks - Star Spangled Banner - Funkwich

That's it! Just a couple of hours, but I tried my best to cover all the bases.
Maybe a bit too little barbershop, but more on that over the next few months.

I really like to promote concerts - If you have a show in the Northeast/Mid
Atlantic US you'd like to promote, send me the details at CASAJersey@....

I also like playing new CD's. Send them along!!! Here's the address:

  Rich Pearson
  275 Morningside Terrace, Apt. F
  Teaneck, NJ 07666

I'll play three cuts off any disc the first opportunity I have!

And finally, I am considering a larger Radio project in the New York area.
However, I _really_ need a barbershopper to do it. So, any barbershopper
interested in starting a show which will be a fusion of "Applause" (WDVR) and
"All A Cappella" (WERS), and lives in the NYC Tri-State area, write me - I think
that something can be done so that Boston and the Lehigh Valley don't have all
the fun!

In Harmony,
:-) Rich Pearson

I have a cassette tape of the original "ChordHuskers" quartet
from Fort Dodge, IA circa 1952. I believe it was taken from a
78 rpm record transcribed from a contest in Sioux City, IA.
We had been organized only a short time, but we finished in
the top 20 at the contest and were awarded small medals
for out efforts.

The members of the quartet were:

Dick Johnson: Lead
Louis Bohn: Tenor
Max Hooley: Bari
Louis Gargano: Bass

I am sure that any surviving members would like a copy
of the cassette -- and I am very willing to make those
copies and mail them to those interested. I need to know
how many of those guys are still around.

The last contact I had with Max (Hooley) was many years
ago in the Colorado Springs area. Louis Gargano was
suffering from Parkinsons' in the late 80's and may be
unable to respond. I have no idea if Louis Bohn (Manson,
Iowa) is still around.

If any of you is able to give me more definite information
I would be eternally grateful.

I thank you all for any help you can give me/us.

Any chance you're related to Bob Giallombardo? Butchering Tom Lehrer songs
are secondary to my real passion, collecting baseball cards and memoribilia.
I found a couple of his baseball cards and thought I'd send 'em to you if he
turned out to be Ol' Uncle Bob!
Sincerely,
RIchard Stanford
