There was a note earlier about the fact that there was "nothing inherently
non-barbershop about lyrics". I'm not advocating a particular position on this,
please, but you might get a discussion about that. In standard definitions the
Society has used in the past in contest, barbershop songs were characterized as
having ingenuous (innocent or simple) lyrics, in contrast with more
sophisticated poetry of other song styles. The current competitive definitions
would seem to have abandoned that constraint, but the fact that it may not be
penalized in contest doesn't mean that a formal characterization of "barbershop"
wouldn't have mention of the simplicity of the poetry of its songs.

Again, I'm neither agreeing nor disagreeing with that position, but the original
comment couldn't be universally agreed to -- lyrical content has indeed been
cited in definitions of the style.

Actually, the decision regarding Harmony College was NOT made at the
Board meeting. Rather, Don Harris reported that it is likely to be
Ohio State, but that he needed a bit more time to cement the decision.
At least, that is what was discussed at the meeting I attended.

Gentlemen of the Board-
Word came out today on the Harmonet that you have narrowed down
the search for a new HQ to four cities: Atlanta, Austin, Dallas/Ft
Worth, and Nashville. As a resident of the Chicago suburbs, I am
greatly distressed to think that my ability to make quick trips to
Kenosha to pillage the Harmony Marketplace in person is in jeopardy.
You have recently indicated a willingness to re-evaluate decisions
in the face of overwhelming logic and reason. Therefore, I humbly
submit these iron-clad arguments against the cities mentioned:
Atlanta has the worst traffic jams in America. Rush hour lasts
two days, and the traffic jams snarl all the way from Chattanooga to
Savannah.
The avergage daily temperature in Austin is 147 degrees. That
can't be good for tape and cd storage.
If the last 25 years have demonstrated anything, it is that there
is NO interest in barbershop in the Dallas/Ft Worth area.
Why would anyone involved in any kind of music think Nashville is
a happening city?
Clearly, these four cities - which may have their own certain
charms - are not good choices for the Barbershop Harmony Society HQ.
I would also like to kindly suggest an alternative, a city which
reflects the midwestern roots of barbershop, a location that would
not necessitate a long and expensive move, and one that also sits
astride the beautiful Fox River: ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
Sincerely,
Shane Scott

For years, I've dreamed of a device that would provide real-time
visual feedback on a singer's intonation. Meters developed for
tuning instruments tend to swing wildly when you sing into them, so
they aren't very helpful. Recently, I discovered software you can
download to your PDA that will give you a visual indication of the
pitch you are singing. It's based on a novel display concept that
provides useful real time feedback. Best of all, if you have a
compatible PDA, it's CHEAP - $18.

The software is called PhonTuner. As long as you haven't drifted
into another key entirely, it will tell you if you are above or
below the intended pitch. Response time is a measurable fraction of
a second, so it's not usable on quick passages, but even in an
uptune you'll have one or two held notes in every phrase, so it can
be used to provide real time feedback on your intonation.

This software is particularly useful for leads, who are primarily
responsible for maintaining key center. It can also be useful for
basses, who tend to sing notes (roots, fourths, & fifths) that don't
have to be "bent" to fit the chord. Baritones and tenors need to
tune their notes into the chord framed by the leads and basses, so
feedback on absolute pitch will be less useful (but it may be
entertaining nonetheless...).

Phontuner runs on select Pocket PC and Palm OS PDAs and on some Sony
Ericsson Smartphone mobile phones.

For more information or to purchase the software, go to

I have a small program from Audio Phonics (AP Instrument Tuner), which I
think was free. It has a needle and you tell it the note you want to sing,
and then as you move up or down, the needle varies to left or right. I
don't think that it "swing wildly" (unless the voice itself is swinging
wildly!). It's work a look.

In the current BHS Contest & Judging Handbook (contest rules), lyrics are
referenced in several key places. The handbook is available on the society web
site at:

http://www.spebsqsa.org/web/groups/public/documents/graphics/pub_contestjudgingh\
andbookrev2.pdf

In the definition of the barbershop style (in several places in the C&J
Handbook), you will find:

"Barbershop music features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable
melodies, ..."

In the Music category description, you will find the following:

"3. The Music judge notes the musical value of the lyrics. Effective song
lyrics possess artistic and poetic qualities not found in ordinary prose.
Amateurish lyrics often lack such qualities, being unpoetic or inelegant. The
Music judge expects to hear rhyming lyrics in all sections of a song. The
absence of rhyme, when it is distracting, lowers the score.

"4. In good music, the marriage of lyrics with other musical elements is natural
and elegant. Lyrics that are unsupported by the melody, or poorly tailored to
the rhythm and/or meter, will result in a lower score.

"6. Alteration of the composer's lyrics might be distracting, especially when
the pyrics are well known. Alterations are acceptable, for example, when the
original lyrics would not be clearly understood by today's audiences."

In the Presentation category description you will find the following:

"c. Presentations where the meaning is unclear, by virtue of obscure lyrics or
abstruse visual or interpretive planning, are less effective."

Finally, there is an entire position paper on "Obscure Lyrics" (Page 42 of the
C&J Handbook) that deals with this question in considerable detail. The essence
of its conclusion is that a performer must be able to communicate effectively
with an audience through the lyrics of a song. If the lyrics are sufficiently
obscure as to hinder that communication, then they are not recommended. I won't
reproduce the entire position paper here, but I encourage anyone who is
interested in this subject to read it.

There is a little villare outside of Frederick, Maryland within about a 75
minute drive of the White House by the name of Harmony. It seems an
infinitely more appropriate place to move HQ to than any of the choices
suggested. It is also within about an hours drive of the Lester S Levy sheet
music collection at Johns Hopkins - 100,000 pieces of sheet music.

It is also within an hour's drive (roughly) of the Chesapeake Bay - home of
the Blue Crab. KIBbers would be right at home.

Of course, my $.02 is not worth a lot on the subject.

Obviously the author has never attempted the Springfield interchange on I-95
in Virginia.

The easiest way is to use the Harmonet Archive Database at
http://louisvilletimes.org/harmonet/
Just type the year you want to search from in the "From" field, and
search for a subject or sender.
