I do believe that the original post was talking about RIGHT NOW. All of the
accomplishments that Mike Renner outlined are only less than a month old.
There is no argument that other cities have had grand and glorious
pasts...and even present successes.

Mike was making the challenge based on the present state of barbershopping
in that city....and to fan the fire...just a little <Grin>.

I'm going to have to disagree with you and go with Louisville :-)

1. Michigan Jake -- current silver medalists, soon to be champs :-)
2. Louisville Times -- started a revolutionary change in the bbshop world
:-)
3. Thoroughbreds -- champion chorus (don't remember all the years off top
of
head)
4. The Sensations -- International rep '01
5. Citations -- top 5 International
6. Second Edition -- '89 Champs
7. FlashPoint -- 35th International ('97)
8. 2 Times 2 -- medaled in district
9. Syndicate -- medaled in district

But then again - I'm prejudiced :-) Anyone else??

When I grow up, I want to be one of "Brenda's Buddies!"

Would Brenda be, .........maybe Brenda Rummel?

Acappella Xpress, the current Region 6 Sweet Adeline champion chorus, was
featured in the Sunday entertainment section of The Forum.
The story focuses on the chorus as outgoing regional champs, and the
upcoming regional convention to be held in Fargo May 11-13.

Here's the link to the story directly:

http://www.in-forum.com/pub/04292001/21135.shtml

or www.in-forum.com
and click on Entertainment.

It's been a wonderful ride as chorus champs for the 2000-01 season. We're
looking forward to our first international contest in 10 years.

Hello all,

I read an article in the Harmonizer about some of the great moments
in our International contest history.

In that vein, let me ask what you think was the best contest set
(Chorus and/or Quartet) at International Competition, and why?

Since I've only been to International 3 times (1996, 1997, & 2000) I
can't speak with much authority. But, I would have to say that
PLATINUM's 3rd night set, Smilin' Through and Cuddle Up A Little
Closer, was unbelievable. I kept thinking that there was no way for
them to top what they had done the previous two sessions. Their PRE
score for Cuddle Up was 489/500, or 97.8%!!! Amazing!!! I remember
standing ovations on at least four of their six songs.

Since I have been a competitor in the chorus contests, I haven't been
able to witness the winners (VM twice and MOH).

Thanks in advance for sharing your memories with me, and with the
rest of us.

WOW - you people are really getting spoiled! Does anyone but me remember
when we used to have to wait for the reporter to go to her weekly chorus
rehearsal to get a copy of the score sheet??? ;-) I would prefer to wait
until HQ posts all the other award info so I could include that, but your
impatience seems to indicate that you would rather have the numbers, and
fast. I do add all that stuff as I get it to my files, including songs
sometimes, when I can get them. That way, in 2008, when you ask for
something, you'll get complete info.

Regarding these director boo-boos... why in the world would you NOT send me
those corrections when I post the order of appearance?????? Then I would
have the correct information for the score postings!! What a concept!

I am getting testy in my old age. Ten contests to go - hope you can stand it!

Anyway, I am sorry to have published these two mistakes:

Add Eileen Rosenberg as co-director of Harbor City Music Co., the Region 19
champion chorus. (And when did these chorus names get so out of control,
length-wise???? ;-)

The director of Brandywine (Region 19) was Bob Bennett, not Rick Serpico.

Further changes/additions:

The panel for Region 9:

Official Panel:
Sound - Judy Ashmore
Music - June Berg (Chair)
Expression - Vickie Maybury
Showmanship - Sandi Wright

Replace the third place chorus in Region 9:

Toast of Tampa Show 78 78 76 81
Tampa, FL 79 77 81 79
Susie Bonds 157 155 157 160 629 3 78.63

I had the wrong expression subtotal, overall total and percentage.

In the chorus summary, I moved lots of Region 19 choruses to Region 16.
Sorry about that! That summary has been posted again.

Going back a ways: in Region 12, the showmanship score for Pacific
Empire's second song should be 81. The category total and overall total
were correct.

I'm hoping this is all for now!

I tried to send a message earlier today about listing your votes for all-time
best International Contest sets, and it still has not posted to the group. Are
there only five messages because no one is interested today, or is there a
problem of some sort?

While all of the proffered locales have been worthy of the nomination,
and all of the various choruses, quartets, etc., have most certainly
supported those nominations - for my money, the best barbershop city is
whichever one in which I am getting my current "fix!" And while,
listening to a great group offer up a tremendous barbershop performance
is thrilling, nothin' beats ringing the chord yourself!

| Sweet harmonies: Fargo's Acapella Xpress prepares for Sweet
| Adelines convention, competition
|
| By Tom Pantera
|
| The Forum - 04/29/2001
|
| If you're a fan of a cappella music - especially the
| barbershop variety - the next two weeks will be heavenly.
|
| Choruses from all over the Upper Midwest and parts of
| Canada will be in town for two separate conventions.
|
| The first will be Friday and Saturday when the Land O'
| Lakes District of the Society for the Preservation and
| Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America meets
| in Fargo.
|
| The second will be May 10 through 13, when the Sweet
| Adelines International Can-Am Regional Convention and
| Competition meets here.
|
| Pat Rittgarn, a member of Fargo-Moorhead's Acappella Xpress
| women's show chorus and co-chairman of the women's
| convention, says the Sweet Adelines event should draw 600 to
| 700 people, with 16 quartets and 13 full choruses competing.
| The region covers the Dakotas, Minnesota, part of Montana,
| part of Ontario and all of Manitoba.
|
| This is the second year in a row the convention has been
| held in Fargo. The convention also was held here in the
| bad-weather year of 1997, when a blizzard stranded all the
| attendees at the Holiday Inn. "We had a great time,"
| Rittgarn says. "The Holiday Inn was very gracious."
|
| Acappella Xpress, the defending champions, won't actually
| be competing this time. "If you win one year, the following
| year you come back as the outgoing champion and you
| perform," Rittgarn explains.
|
| The Acappella Xpress performance will be held on the
| convention's second day. The chorus competition will be at
| noon on the same day in Festival Concert Hall on the North
| Dakota State University campus.
|
| But Windstar, the Acappella Xpress quartet, will compete.
| The quartet competition will be at 6:30 p.m. on the
| convention's second day, also in Festival Concert Hall.
|
| While both choruses and quartets sing in four-part harmony,
| the similarity ends there.
|
| "In a chorus, you have many people singing each part,"
| Rittgarn says. "In a quartet, there is just one person
| singing each of the parts. In a quartet "you can't rely on
| anyone else."
|
| But that's part of the fun, she adds.
|
| Both choruses and quartets are "an opportunity for adults
| to be able to perform, to dance, to sing, to use their
| musical skills theatrically," she says. "You don't just
| stand in a chorus. You learn choreography. I was in my 30s
| before I could sing and dance at the same time."
|
| And the lack of instrumentation is a plus, she says. "You
| totally rely on the vocal production. You're not enhancing
| it with instrumentation. It's just a pure sound. It's kind
| of exciting."
|
| Judges for the competitions will come from all across the
| country. Rittgarn says each judge assesses an individual
| area: music, sound, expression and showmanship.
|
| "There's very extensive criteria for each category," she
| says. "The judges are all trained and they must pass certain
| criteria in order to be qualified. It's a very lengthy
| education process." Most have degrees in music, she adds.
|
| The judging itself is done to very exacting standards.
|
| "The actual criteria are kind of technical," Rittgarn says.
| "We sing everything a cappella, so there's no musical
| background. Our music is written in four-part harmony, so
| the chords ring. If you're singing it right on, you can hear
| a fifth note." That fifth note, an octave higher than the
| rest, is a byproduct of the harmony called an overtone.
|
| But equally as important as technical singing skill is the
| presentation. "Showmanship is the costuming and makeup and
| hair, but it's also the choreography, the energy, how you
| put your music across the footlights," Rittgarn says.
|
| The local chorus has been around since 1955 and has gone on
| to international competition eight times in the last 20
| years. Before that, there were no international competitions
| for choruses, only for quartets.
|
| In the next international competition, in October in
| Portland, Ore., Acappella Xpress will compete against groups
| from 27 regions covering not only this part of the world but
| England, Sweden, Germany and New Zealand. (International
| chorus competitions are scheduled 18 months after regional
| competitions to give winning groups time to raise funds for
| the trip.)
|
| One of the convention's biggest events, a cabaret, will be
| held at 8 p.m. May 12 in the Fargo Holiday Inn Great Hall.
| The new regional champions and the second- and third-place
| finishers, in both chorus and quartet, will perform, as will
| Breakpoint, an award-winning local men's barbershop quartet.
|
| The competitions and performances are open to the public.
| Tickets for events at Festival Concert Hall are $15 and are
| available from the box office there; tickets for the cabaret
| are $15 and available at the door.

Also, you forgot to include the Interstate Rivals, along with 1/4 of Marquis.
Louisville is #1 in my books. You also will have to throw in the Harrington
Brothers in the top quartets.

Please don't forget Bluegrass Student Union from Louisville.

There are several outstanding performances that I can recall. One was when
the Regents won in 1974 with the singing of "Little Girl" This was one of
my better years where I had front row seats very close to the center of the
stage. I was a blubbering mess for several minutes after this performance.

My next overwhelming performance was none other than in 1980 when the Boston
Common won in SLC with "That Old Quartet of Mine/" I truly think if the
judges had not awarded the gold to the BC that the audience would have
tarred and feathered all the judges to include the contest administrators.

I think the next was in 1981 when the Thoroughbreds performed the Mardi Grau
March package! Dress in Red, Dressed in Blue, they went marching, marching,
marching to the MG, with golden horns in hand!

I can't remember the year, but the VM performance when they sang "Who'll
Take My Place When I'm Gone" was a barn-burner also. I suspect it may have
been in 1982 in Pittsburgh.

Then of course there was the GHG winning in Calgary in 1993 singing "Bright
was the Night" If memory serves me they also sang this song in 92 in the
N'alins contest but didn't have the same impact there.

And I would be remiss if I didn't include FRED'S performance's in the
Atlanta Contest in 1998. Joe Clay stole the show there. Pookie was the
perennial clown, but "Joe Clay" the bass was the star in 1998.

I might add that contest scores do not always reflect the greatest
performances as judged by the audience. Grandma's Boys and the New Tradition
chorus's toy soldier performances warrant serious consideration. GB did the
Toy Soldier set first in 1978 when the BSU won.

I am working on a project for a time capsule for a new school. we are placing
various types of music (recordings) in this capsule for future generations
(100 years) to open.I am to select two recordings (1 quartet and 1 chorus
...one song each) which ,in my opinion best reflects the barbershop style.
I have selected Acoustix version of an Irish Lullaby and the Miamians version
of Bundle of Old Love Letters. I know consensus is impossible but do you all
have a better selection for this worthy endeavor?

Hey, Jack and friends,

I'll agree with Jack on the song (accompanied by "Roll Them Bones"),
but I'll take 1992 over their champ year. I bet my opinion is framed
mainly in "newness". I wonder which year scored higher. Kipp... any
help?

I've been to every Int'l since 1988, but was 10 when I started, so it
wasn't until recently that I appreciated glorious performances. Since
the question has been thrown in to packages, I can come up with so
many "wanna be" packages of two awesome songs done in the same
contest, but different sets:

1. Nightlife, 1996: Quarters- "Mason-Dixon Line", I had seen them do
bettre, but still just an awesome song. Semis- "Basin Street Blues",
simply unforgettable. I remember pounding out the rhythm with my fist
on my neighbors knee, and he doing the same. Flawless, as agreed by
judge Brent Graham, who awarded them with a 100.

2. Power Play, 2000: Semis- "Time After Time", Mike Slamka, my
all-time favorite lead. Not only on stage, but off. It's amazing to
stand behind stage as a fellow top-tenner and stand there melting
compliments to him (and them) when they were about to win a medal they
had earned twice previously (of course, in my opinion only!) as a
fan instead of a competitor. Finals- "For Sale- One Broken Heart",
again, Mike's expression is unparalleled to my ear.

3. Platinum, 1999: Finals- "Cuddle Up...", watching on the video is
even more fun than live. You watch the faces of then having such a
hit that they can enjoy their finals set as almost an "acceptance
song" feeling. Above and beyond the dreams of those chasing a medal
is the "unreachable" feeling of slam-dunking early and enjoying the
rest of the ride. Especially the tag!!! You watch Kevin hit his
hanger in such a "spot" that he can't go wrong, and watch the other
3's faces liven up with a "let's nail this" look. And they did!! I
have never seen/heard a chord lock faster than that very last chord.
Truly magical! Thanks, guys! Some night (????)- "Auld Lang Syne",I
just love good old classic melodies that are tastefully decorated by
today's pros. Nice work!

My best experiences:
1. Gotcha!, 1999, Semis- "Royal Garden Blues", thank you for giving
us so much love. Even making the ten last year has not paralleled the
feeling from on stage that night. You bbs fans are simply amazing.
It doesn't matter where a quartet is at a point in time, but there's
something to be said about doing your persoanl best in front of 10,000
people, and I must say we all enjoy the memory to this day and
forever. Thank you!
2. MOH, 1996- "Love Me, and The World is Mine", I had just gone to
MoH during colege. My first gold, and another religious experience
with my brothers and sisters in harmony. Thanks for showing your
appreciation of the song. I will never forget it!

There may be lots of discussion about the chorus choice, but for me there
is no doubt of the most exemplary quartet performance; That Old Quaret Of
Mine by the Boston Common.

Ok, so Jambalaya is representing the MAD this year (we certainly
don't mind) nad they are members of the Frank Thorne chapter. Where
are they living now? Stockholm, uh ... New Jersey? Yeah, NJ, that's
the ticket. Where?

Diane is correct, Clay Hine did the arrangement. About this time last year,
I contacted him to get the arrangement for an Irving Berlin show we were
doing. You can reach him at Clayhine@.... You may find, as I did last
year, that he is slightly busy this time of year.

Best of luck,

Ya got my vote John. However the following year in Detroit the Ritz did a
fine job on Sweet Adeline also. Maybe it would be appropriate that the time
capsule contain more than one quartet performance.

There may be lots of discussion about the chorus choice, but for me there
is no doubt of the most exemplary quartet performance; That Old Quaret Of
Mine by the Boston Common.

To all --

Before Kipp chimes in, here are the scores for the 1992 and 1993
performances of "Bright was the Night" by the Gas House Gang at
International. Scores notwithstanding, 1992 in New Orleans had the audience
on their seat edges for NOT knowing what was coming, while in Calgary in
1993 we were on our seat edges for KNOWING what was coming. Both were
remarkable, but the first time was a landmark performance right up with
anything I'll ever be privileged to see.

Please remember that the scoring categories then were Sound, Stage Presence,
Interpretation (all on a 0-100 scale) and Arrangement (on a +20 to -19 scale
based on specific items in the chart as performed). The changes after
Calgary don't affect this quartet; they were the last winners in the old
system. On a three judge panel, the scores were:

Sound: 1992 -- 283 points 1993 -- 273 points
Interpretation: 1992 -- 272 points 1993 -- 274 points
Stage Presence: 1992 -- 273 points 1993 -- 269 points
Arrangement: 1992 -- +3 points 1993 -- +13 points

All three Sound judges were the same in both contests, as were one each of
the Interpretation and Stage Presence judges. I'll let the panels comment,
but I think most of us would regard the offsetting Arrangement and Sound
score difference of 3 points per judge a year apart as barely notable. My
personal opinion is that no audience member from New Orleans could hear the
piece again in the same way -- I certainly was there both times and still
would pay to watch and hear them do it -- as they did in 1992.

This naturally raises the discussion point of the impact of the "first time"
for such a piece on scoring. I'd be glad to say that I think in the current
system, such an impact would be rewarded if a miracle might recur and
another group might resurrect a piece in a similar fashion. (It's also
related to why I never, EVER introduce a song in any of my quartets by
mentioning the name of the song. Never. Not once. We're storytellers,
after all, and telling the name of the song is tantamount to giving away the
punchline of the story).

Anyway, you now have the facts on the scoring, and it probably answers
nothing.

Regards

Bob Sutton

Ed,
You don't think that, had you been ostracized, anyone would actually tell
you, do you? I don't think anyone would actually break the code of silence
... oops ... hope I didn't give anything away 'shoppers, your secret is safe
with me.

Actually, I also received very little traffic in the last day or so. Maybe
I'm ostrichized as well. Probably comes from too many days with my head in
the sand.
