I recently added a BCF2000 to a Mac based Cubase SX setup. I updated
the software as recommended and set it to Mackie Control emulation.
SX 3.1 recognizes the BCF as a Mackie Control in the MIDI device
setup panel. The four lower right button work as transport controls,
the sliders control channel volume, and the upper rows of button and
encoders act as expected for mute, pan, etc. If I press the right
preset button, the controls work on channels 9-16, etc. I assume all
of this is as it should be. But:

1. The encoders (knobs) work as pan knobs only if I have pressed the
EDIT button so its LED is lit.
2. The 4 character display never shows anything more than the
version number on power up, and then a couple of odd characters after
that.
3. I cannot figure out what buttons act as a SHIFT to access other
functions listed for the Mackie Control. Nothing seems to alter the
function of any other control.

My questions:

1. From these three symptoms, can anyone tell me if I have set
things up incorrectly, and what needs to be done?
2. Can anyone recommend a book or other resource that explains the
BCF in some more detail, and with a lot more example, so I can figure
out how to do some other programming? With respect to Behringer, the
manual does absolutely nothing for me. For example, I'd like to be
able to set the upper rows of buttons to toggle the automation read
and write functions in Cubase.
