A quote from the New Grove (1990 edition): "The greatest composer of his
country, he was responsible, with his friend Kodaly, for the awakening
of serious interest in Hungarian folk music."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Bartok was one of the *first*
composers to utilise folk music in his compositions. At any rate, he is
the first to introduce Hungarian folk music to the world.
But that's the unique sound to his music you hear, I think.

He also really liked Richard Strauss, btw. Apparently his hearing of
"Also sprach Zarathustra" changed his life.

A side note: I am amazed to read that he has an unfinished symphony. Has anyone
every heard it? The New Grove says the scherzo "served as Bartok's
diploma composition." Interesting.
