Hello everyone,
The ABC Classic FM Radio Station has redemmed itself by having a
program of Bartok and Liszt music on Monday 3rd April 2006. Here are
the details and the link. It can be listened to on streaming radio.
Monday 3 April
Afternoons: Focus on Liszt and Bartók - 1.05pm
Today's look at two of Hungary's major composers, Franz Liszt and
Bela Bartók, begins with selections of their music that reflect
their national heritage. The second half of the program shows the
more contemplative side of both men.
Rather than the folk music of his homeland, Liszt was drawn to the
fire and virtuosity of gypsy music as reflected in his Hungarian
Rhapsody No.3. Bartók's Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra follows in
the brilliant Lisztian tradition but also utilises Hungarian folk
dance forms.
We also hear five songs from Bartók's Seven Choruses with Orchestral
Accompaniment, which are based on Hungarian folk music. In 1840
Liszt wrote not only his virtuosic Piano Concert No.1 but also the
six short, mainly calm and reflective Consolations – the title was
taken from a collection of poems by Sainte-Beuve. Bartók's moving
and at times austere Concerto for Orchestra ends with a re-
affirmation of life.
