Interesting topic. It's true that contemporary rock n' roll is a rehashing
of the music that has come before. Then again, that's what all music is.
Some bands, like the Strokes or The Darkness, are obnoxious because they
rehash the kitchy aspects of the music that has come before them. They suck
out the pop, skim from the top, so to speak. Other bands, like Spoon, draw
from their influences (the Pixies, the Beatles, etc) and try to make their
own sound. I think the YYY's are somewhere between these extremes.
Rock and roll is constantly evolving. Bluziggy's thoughts about hip-hop
overtaking rock n' roll were interesting to me. However, when I hear Andre
3000 of Outkast, I hear a hybrid of rock and hip-hop. Sometimes I feel
similarly when I hear Prince. Blondie rapped. There's a lot of gray area
between genres and the gaps will be bridged, often in more than one way, and
almost always by more than one artist. Hip-hop certainly seems to be the
new music of the masses though. As far as parents are concerned, it's the
new metal.
The next new trend? I think a mo-town/rock revival is in order because I'm
sick of emo music. I want dancing in the streets.
Big Boote makes me dance in the streets. The new drummer should be a robot.
With the right mechanic, he'd never have to be replaced again. That would
solve everything!
