Greetings to one and all from Flip City! A couple of items for you
today...
First up are the words that former Permanent Flame webmaster, Mark
Rushton, sends along:
Time For A New Compilation (currently untitled, but I'll think of
something eventually....)
It's been a couple of years since Chuck Bird's "Confessions Of
Young Moderns" 3CD boxed set came out and I'm thinking it's about
time that the music creators amongst us get together to produce
another compilation. This compilation will be a little different
than Multiplex or Confessions.
Instead of being a "covers" or `tribute' CD, I'd like to see it
contain songs in your own style - whatever your style is. However,
if you work in a vein similar to Bill's music then that is OK too.
It'll be a single CD. Having only a single CD means that some
submissions might not make the final cut, for whatever reason. But
if there's enough great submissions maybe I'll compile and
release `Volume 2' eventually.
Plus it'll be cheap. It will be sold for `at-cost'. Oh, and I'd
like to have the entire thing ready and available within 90 days.
That's around May 1st. __90 days!__ 'Have I lost my mind.' Not
really, let me explain. There is a new label being created on the
Internet right now. I can't give out any details, but from what
I've heard this will definitely change the course of the way music
is sold via the Internet. This compilation will come out on this
new 'artist-friendly' label.
No, there won't be any MP3 files involved. No downloading either.
I'm talking uncompressed WAV files here `on a real CD` in a real
jewel case `with real graphics` with a barcode and ISBN and
everything else you expect from a store-bought CD.
All the artist needs to do is create the music and mail me a CD
master with any credits written down. I'll listen to all the tracks
submitted, pick out 10 or 15 or 20, create the song order, do the
graphics in Photoshop, and then let you know when it's coming out.
Submitting a song on a CD means you get a chance to be part of the
compilation, although there's no guarantees. Submissions will be
accepted until April 15, 2003.
I won't accept MP3s or requests to listen to MP3s anywhere on the
net. I also don't want to hear entire albums or deal with requests
such as `listen to these three and select your favorite'. Just pick
one song and send it along. Submissions can't be returned. The
artist will retain full rights to their own music. No royalties
will be paid out since there will be no profits. No covers will be
accepted. No illegal samples either, please.

This is a wonderful idea on Mark's part, and i thank him for taking
the time and effort to coordinate the thing. (No more late nights
worrying about the spiralling costs of Confessions!)
Second item: The oft-talked about Bill Nelson in North America
deal. i know what you're all saying: "We know that Bill is coming
over to Mexico City in March, why can't he swing by LA or NY on the
way home?"
Well, when he sent me the diary entry that talked about the Mexico
City concert he also asked how things were going for a US
appearance. Sadly, they aren't going forward. And its all my fault;
i'm just too busy with work schedule to spend the necessary time to
work it out. So, i'm asking for a volunteer. Before you throw your
hat into the ring please contact Alan Myers
(webmaster@...) and find out what's involved. Alan
spent a lot of time, and up-front expenses to pull off Nelsonica '01
and '02. He has the experience and he knows some of the hurdles on
the road in front of you.
If you still want to proceed with planning the visit i'll put you in
touch with Richard Chadwick of Opium Arts. I WILL _NOT_ GIVE OUT
BILL'S EMAIL TO ANYONE! If Bill wants you to have it, he'll give it
to you.
i'd love to see Bill over here in the States as much as any other
fan. i hope there's someone with the time to pull this off. Please
hit up Alan for some information.
Thanks for stopping by this week.
