I was just reading this afternoon about a new computer threat and only mention it here, because of the fact it is a supposed 'download accelerator' that speeds up downloads of movies, music etc. I can see some people thinking this might be a good thing. Of course when you download it, its not an accelerator at all. What it does instead, is blcoks your access to the internet in your computer, except for access to this one Russian website, and a page of Russian text comes up on the screen. Its what is known as a computer hijacker, and it tells you that you have to purchase a program to remove this from your system and regain your internet access. The only way to remove this is reformatting your hard drive (unless you pay the 'ransom' to get the program that removes the block. Of course, antivirus companies are working on a fix to remove it without paying or reformatting, but they haven't gotten this broken as yet.

Good morning Billy, well I have read articles that those download accelerators
don't do all that much to begin with, but it would be something that a person
would possibly go for if they thought they could get their downloads faster. I
could easily see someone get taken in by, with a promise like that.

The article also said, and a good point, if a person is looking for any kind of
programs these days, to do a search at cnet.com or download.com, both trusted
sites. Searching for programs via google is really dangerous as this is where
people get these supposed malware removal tools that are actually the malware
itself.

Hi Lisanne, yes I have heard of spybot search and destroy and have used it
myself in the past. Another program I have heard through a computer guy who
posts youtube videos, is called malwarebytes, if I have the name correctly.
Apparently its quite good at removing spyware etc. from systems and I have seen
it recommended by at least 3 computer 'gurus'.

yep its always fun if you can safely check these emails. This type is right up
there with the guy from Nigeria who wants you to help get some money to a
relative here and he will pay you a huge reward. I have also had ones saying
its from a British lottery official very similar to the one you had. Often it
goes on to say we just need your banking information, personal identification
etc. etc. Yeah, sure I'll just email that right back right away lol.

I am getting a few that say it is from the IRS and an immediate payment is
needed for taxes owing. Click this link to look at your account statement.
That could possibly scare some people except in Canada we dont call the tax
department the IRS so I wouldn't owe the US IRS any money. I guess they need to
get that only to US citizens to have any luck.

There are all kinds of little tricks and tweaks one can do to speed up your
'puter. One of them is Firefox. I've now heard that Google Chrome is even
faster.

A good anti-malware program will detect the rogue malware programs. I use
Malware Bytes, though I don't run it often. I know this as Malware Bytes (which
is free) removed the rogue programs. One that I actually paid for!!

Another tweak that helps is to remove the access junk that piles up. I use Crap
Cleaner. It's free and speedy. I also dump the temp files, recycle bin and
defrag everynight before signing off.

Also good to brush and floss daily.

I get these quite often. I only posted that one here, as we were near the
subject.

Also, don't forget that these groups get spammed as well. PBR and SOS being
worse than the others. I catch it in time, as new memebers are moderated until
they prove themselves to be safe.

It's a little extra work to keep these groups spam-free, but it's worth it.

Did you really want to see videos of hot Iranian babes? I doubt there's any real
video at all. Most likely the link will give you a virus.

Yep, firefox is good. I also tried Google Chrome and it seemed good too, but you
only need so many browsers. I read the debate about Google Chrome vs Firefox,
Firefox is slightly slower than Google Chrome the first time its opened each
day, but it opens again quicker the next times until you shut down.

You know whats funny that I have often wondered about these lottery win emails?
People fall for them and yet, if you never bought a British or a European
Lottery ticket, how would people expect that they won when they get this email?
I guess they think somehow their name is tossed in or something.

I recently tried a good defrag program that is free and seems a bit better and a
little faster than the regular Windows defrag. Its called Defraggler, which is
from the same people who do CCleaner. After running it, which just seemed faster
than the windows defrag, I noticed a bit of a speedup on my system. So either
it was due for defragging or else it just does a better job, not sure.

Here is a link to it if anyone cares to give it a try. After you click on
download there is a couple of boxes for paypal, thats for those who care to make
a donation to the creator, but its free to use.

Being that I had to 'learn' Firefox, I'm not willing to try Google Chrome so
soon. I still kept IE 6 as my default browser, as I have a couple programs that
won't run on Firefox.

It's crazy. Why would anybody think they've won a European lottery? Since I've
been online, I've won several of them, and I haven't seen one dollar (or euro)
yet.

I want to try that Defraggler, so I think I'll click on that link now and see
what happens.

Thanks!!

> Yep, firefox is good. I also tried Google Chrome and it seemed good too, but
you only need so many browsers. I read the debate about Google Chrome vs
Firefox, Firefox is slightly slower than Google Chrome the first time its opened
each day, but it opens again quicker the next times until you shut down.
>
> You know whats funny that I have often wondered about these lottery win
emails? People fall for them and yet, if you never bought a British or a
European Lottery ticket, how would people expect that they won when they get
this email? I guess they think somehow their name is tossed in or something.
>
> I recently tried a good defrag program that is free and seems a bit better and
a little faster than the regular Windows defrag. Its called Defraggler, which
is from the same people who do CCleaner. After running it, which just seemed
faster than the windows defrag, I noticed a bit of a speedup on my system. So
either it was due for defragging or else it just does a better job, not sure.

Bob Dylan Arrested For Walking

Bob Dylan Arrested for Walking
    James Joyner | Sunday, August 16, 2009

Bob Dylan was on the pavement, thinking about the government. And they arrested him.

Rock legend Bob Dylan was treated like a complete unknown by police in a New Jersey shore community when a resident called to report someone wandering around the neighborhood.

Dylan was in Long Branch, about a two-hour drive south of New York City, on July 23 as part of a tour with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp that was to play at a baseball stadium in nearby Lakewood.

A 24-year-old police officer apparently was unaware of who Dylan is and asked him for identification, Long Branch business administrator Howard Woolley said Friday. “I don’t think she was familiar with his entire body of work,” Woolley said.

The incident began at 5 p.m. when a resident said a man was wandering around a low-income, predominantly minority neighborhood several blocks from the oceanfront looking at houses. The police officer drove up to Dylan, who was wearing a blue jacket, and asked him his name. According to Woolley, the following exchange ensued:

“What is your name, sir?” the officer asked.

    “Bob Dylan,” Dylan said.

“OK, what are you doing here?” the officer asked.

“I’m on tour,” the singer replied.

A second officer, also in his 20s, responded to assist the first officer. He, too, apparently was unfamiliar with Dylan, Woolley said.

The officers asked Dylan for identification. The singer of such classics as “Like a Rolling Stone” and “Blowin’ in the Wind” said that he didn’t have any ID with him, that he was just walking around looking at houses to pass some time before that night’s show.

The officers asked Dylan, 68, to accompany them back to the Ocean Place Resort and Spa, where the performers were staying. Once there, tour staff vouched for Dylan.

The officers thanked him for his cooperation. “He couldn’t have been any nicer to them,” Woolley added.

Alex Knapp is less than pleased:

That’s just utterly disgusting to me. A 68 year old man out for a walk shouldn’t have to offer his ID to the police. Was he committing a crime? No. Was he suspected of committing a crime? No. Were there any indications that a crime was going to be committed? No. He was just “suspiciously” enjoying public rights-of-way.

Look, someone calls in suspicious behavior and I understand the need to check it out. But an old man walking down the street isn’t “suspicious.” And there’s no law that says that a person has to have ID with them at all times, so I fail to see what justified the need to have two police officers detain somebody until someone could vouch for their identity.

I concur completely.  If it were, say, 2 a.m., Dylan’s actions might have been a bit more suspicious.  But late afternoon in broad daylight?

The Supreme Court has been very deferential to police on these matters.  In the landmark 1968 case Terry v. Ohio, the court held that “Where a reasonably prudent officer is warranted in the circumstances of a given case in believing that his safety or that of others is endangered, he may make a reasonable search for weapons of the person believed by him to be armed and dangerous regardless of whether he has probable cause to arrest that individual for crime or the absolute certainty that the individual is armed.” The so-called Terry Stop doctrine has expanded over the years to the point where, arguably, Americans have little in the way of 4th Amendment rights outside their homes because policemen simply claim that they feared for their safety and judges are, not surprisingly, loathe to overrule them.

The most recent case of which I’m aware that applies here is Hiibel v. 6th Judicial Circuit of Nevada (2004), in which the Supremes upheld the arrest of a man for “refusing to identify himself to a police officer during an investigative stop involving a reported assault” in violation of Nevada’s “stop and identify” statute.  The Court did not rule on whether an ID requirement would be unreasonable; Justice Kennedy’s majority opinion did, however, note that “the Nevada Supreme Court has interpreted the instant statute to require only that a suspect disclose his name. It apparently does not require him to produce a driver’s license or any other document. If he chooses either to state his name or communicate it to the officer by other means, the statute is satisfied and no violation occurs.”

UPDATE: Several other accounts of the story make it clear that Dylan’s activities were indeed more suspicious than taking a walk in the broad daylight.  It was pouring rain and he had no umbrella or raincoat.  And he had wandered off of the sidewalks and was peering into the windows of a house that was for sale.  ABC’s Chris Francescani speculates that Dylan may have been looking for the house where Bruce Springsteen wrote “Born to Run;” it was only two blocks away.

Two other points.  Several commenters object to my use of the term “arrested” since Dylan apparently was not slapped in irons.  But when the police detain you and you are not free to leave, you are under arrest.  The Supreme Court says so.

That said, Tom Maguire makes a fair point:

Finally, who says that the police are only responsible for possible criminal activity?  Dylan may have been a confused old man who was having a mild stroke, or had slipped in the rain and hit his head, or was a hit-and-run victim – the non-criminal possibilities are endless.

But a brief conversation should have been able to ascertain that Dylan was not a danger to himself or others. Once that’s established, the police have done their jobs and should go.  It really doesn’t matter whether he’s really Bob Dylan at that point.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

CCleaner is fairly good, but I'd be careful about precisely what I'd allow it to remove. I have tons of passwords and the first time I used it it deleted them from Firefox. Luckily I back up my profile so I was able to restore them. Their registry cleaner, like many they attempt to remove entries that don't make sense to them. If they don't make sense to you I'd investigate further before allowing changes.

A defrag problem that would move all the data to the front of the drive would be useful. If Defraggler did that it would be worth the price. Even a free alternative to the Windows defrag program is a waste of registry pace if it's not an improvement over it.

hi Lisanne, yes you can get too carried away with Ccleaner if you let it delete
too much stuff. It seems that the way the program is set up is fine, but if
people tweak it and start to check boxes changing settings to do even more then
you can screw up the registry or like you said, delete some cookies and things
used to store passwords.

I think I read something about Defraggler, that it also defrags larger files,
whheras some programs only go through the smaller ones. Also I believe it
defrags the startup routine, or maybe the master boot record, so that the
startup is quicker. This routine gets bogged down over the years with stuff in
it and some defrag progrsms dont touch it. I used to use a fre program called
Auslogics disk defragmenter but find Defraggler to be a better free choice, and
even differnt PC magazine reviews have changed their preference to this.

At work we use a paid program called Diskeeper, but to me this defraggler seems
to do every bit as good for free.

I never had any problems with CCleaner. It did used to remove my passwords when
I was still on IE6, but since switching to Firefox, it hasn't removed any.

I didn't download the Deflaggler (or whatever it was called) as I couldn't find
it on the link provided. I did download that Registry Mechanic, but the free
version only tells you what your 'problems' are. You have to pay to get them
out. Just as I was ready to do that, I looked at some of their other products,
and saw something that Malwarebytes removed. I backed off.

I then ran a Malwarebytes scan and it found nothing.

Buddy Holly That'll Be The Day (MBS) song & lyrics

Buddy Holly  - That'll Be The Day!
Well that'll be the day
When you say good-bye
Yes that'll be the day
When you make me cry
You say you're gonna leave
You know it's a lie
'cause that'll be the day
When I die

Well you give me all your lovin'
And your turtle dovin'
A all your hugs and kisses and your money too
Well uh you know you love me baby
Still you tell me maybe
That someday well I'll be blue

Well oh when cupid shot his dart
He shot it at your heart
So if we ever part then I'll leave you
You sit and hold me and you
Tell me boldly
That someday well I'll be blue

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Yes you probably got the link to that REgistry Mechanic from an ad on that page,
some paid programs advertise on there and thats the catch with them, they will
do a scan but to actually have it do anything you have to buy the paid program.
I used one once to check for up to date drivers, and the program told me I had
some that needed updating but for that program to do it you hae to buy their
paid version.

Here is the link for defraggler from download.com, and download now is on the
left side, the big green button. There is also a review below from I think PC
magazine. Its a safe program so your malwarebytes should not have any issues
with it:

products, and saw something that Malwarebytes removed. I backed off.

yes, when I used even the new link I just send for defraggler, I see the
download now for Registry mechanic, but thats at the top in a box marked "ad
feedback" in small print above the recommended download.

On this new link you want the green 'download now' a little lower down on the
page, just under the name defraggler 1.14.159

I don't remember even seeing a link for the defraggler. There was something it
said to copy and paste, so I did, but that brought me back to same page.
