Hi all,

I created a Yahoo! Group for the late great singer/songwriter Arthur Alexander a few months back.  No one has joined up yet.  So I'm putting the word out on this and a few other lists so that interested/like-minded people are aware of it's existence.

Here 'Tis:

I hope to see you there.

Cheers,

Hi all,

Just found out about these pictures being posted online.  No pictures of Billy but we know he was at the sessions contributing three songs and backing vocals.

I've heard reports that Billy Nicholls is adding backup vocals to the new
Who albums. Has anyone else heard this, or any details?

Yes, and he is singing backing vocals on the Maxi-single "The Glass Household" which is coming out sometime in June on Polydor.  Album to follow in September.  See here for the whole story:
and here for the update:

Making Time February 2006 is now fully on-line, at last. Also check
out the January 2006 reviews: Georgie Fame CD, Bonzo Dog Doo Dah
Band DVD.

CD Review: Steve Marriott- Tin Soldier The Anthology: The greatest
singer that the UK has ever produced? Many would argue that this was
the case. Finally, the anthology of Steve Marriott's work is
available including
classic tracks from the Small Faces and Humble Pie.

DVD Review: The Who - Under Review: The Who were one of the 1960s
really great singles bands. The LPs were bad either! This DVD
documentary looks at the group's output between 1964 and 1968 which
it labels the band's best period, certainly in terms of chart
singles.

Walker Brothers Competition: They may not be British but they did
achieve success by making their name over here. Making Time has five
copies of the new Walkers Brothers/Scott Walker Greatest hits CD to
give away.

New artists added/major updates

Hi,

Not sure if the group are aware of the connection to Dana Gillespie
in the 60's due to her covering 2 of Billy's songs.
Although she released singles on Pye and Decca and an album on Decca
all in the UK, it is the album on London called 'Foolish Seasons'
which was only released in the USA that contains Billy's songs.
The album has covers of 'London Social Degree' and 'Life Is Short'
it's collectable now and quiet difficult to locate but does crop up
on occasions on Ebay.

The good news is that there is now a CD release of this album and a
link to Amazon is given below. Highly recommended for collectors of
Billy's work and also contains a great Donovan song 'You just gotta
know my mind'.
These 2 cover versions along with the 1967 Del Shannon songs produced
by Andrew Oldham are the earliest of Billy's songs to be covered by
other artists.

I don't know if Billy was in anyway involved with the Dana Gillespie
tracks or if she just came across them from the Would You Believe
album.
It would be great to get any recollection from Billy on this.

Hi all,

In case you haven't noticed Yahoo! has made a few minor changes to the Groups functions.  Read on.  These involve email messages to members and how the  message board is viewed.

Here's a link where Yahoo attempts to explain what they've done to
improve your Group email experience:
http://groups.yahoo.com/local/newemail.html

If you decide you want the new group mail format, you will need to
edit your membership here:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/bonscott/join

Click on "Fully Featured New & Improved!" under the Message Preference
heading. Then, save your changes. If you don't like it, you can always
change back to the "Traditional" way. Don't forget to save your
changes again!

Group emails have nothing to do with Yahoo's regular email service. So, these changes will only affect the mail you get from your Yahoo Groups like this one.

As far as the message board goes, they have a new link on it where you
can see all the post's grouped by topics.

For example, click here:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/bonscott/messages/

Then, click on (Group by Topic). You'll see that there are several
topics listed, along with the number of posts in each topic, etc.

By clicking on any desired topic, you can then see all the messages in
that topic (called a "thread").

At any time you can switch back to the regular view of group messages
by going back to this link and clicking on "Individual Messages":
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/bonscott/messages/

You can also change back and forth to either view as much as you want.

The message link along with all the group buttons can always be
found on the left hand side of any group page.

Now if only we could have a little activity on this list.

Cheers,
Mike

I actually got a message from a moderator of a group devoted to [you guessed] Bon Scott.  For the links to work for this group, just copy and paste into the address bar and replace 'bonscott' with the name of this group - all one word and all in lower case.

Afternoon all :0) [yes, i do stray from the pc once in a while ha]........

Saw this bit in the Record Collector which will be of interest to some. It's a message sent in via email by a guy called Jonathan King [Thee?].........

IMMEDIATE PROFIT

I read with Interest about Billy Nicholls' 'Would You Believe' album a few months ago, and 'believe' I have a record on the Immediate label that is equally rare. It's PP Arnold's The First Lady Of Immediate, and like the Billy Nicholls album, only a few hundred were pressed up before release was cancelled. Can you give me a value?

RC: It's true that only a few hundred copies of PP Arnold's First Lady ... album were pressed up before Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label encountered financial difficulties, becoming unable to give an official release in 1967. What makes the record even more mouth-watering is the fact that it has a Rolling Stones and Small Faces connections, with Mick Jagger and Steve Marriott producing some tracks. Although the current RRPG lists the album at £200, we believe that your copy - Mint or otherwise - would sell far in excess of that figure, and suggest a starting price of at least £500. For those with shallower pockets, the Line Records reissue is also out there for a more reasonable price.

Limited edition vinyl out now and new album on the way
Friday 22nd June 2007

Hi Everyone,

Sister Ray Records, a London based specialist in alternative vinyl, CDs
and music rarities, have released a Double Vinyl Album of 'Would You
Believe Billy Nicholls Expanded Limited Version' (1000 numbered
copies).

It's reproduced from the same master as the 'Would You Believe
Deluxe CD' version released by Sanctuary last year.

If you would like to buy a copy from them, click here.

The new acoustic album is now recorded, mastered and called
'ROSSLYN ROAD' a joint project with my brother Michael.

Differing slightly from my usual work, this album has a folk feel with
several new arrangements of traditional songs. One track was specially
composed for a set of Lyrics by WB Yeats and another track features
The Chieftains, including the late Derek Bell on Harp.

Look out for the Rosslyn Road release date in the next couple of
months.

Rumour has it that Keith Urban's successful world tour includes a great
performance of 'Can't Stop Loving You' at every show. I'd love to hear it
next time Keith is in the UK!

Family news... Morgan played the new Wembley Stadium with Muse
over the weekend of 16/17th June and Amy's band Ladybear is playing
the Troubadour, Brompton Road, London on 23rd June - they're on the
same bill as her old friend Jesse Wood's band 'Hogg'.

That's all for now, have a great summer!

Best Wishes

Billy.

nutgone2002

Hi Everyone...well, where to start?   Arrived about 12.45pm and was walking down Carnaby Street to find somewhere to eat and bumped into Kenney Jones (pic below)  He was really nice and thanked me for what I'd done (which was a big relief)  He was then dragged off to do tons of interviews for television and radio.

At about 1.50pm everyone assembled outside 52-55 Carnaby Street where there was a red sheet covering the plaque.  I saw a few familiar faces in the crowd (UK BOB) got introduced to Bax (Darron J Connett's manager) Then I spotted Jimmy Winston and he humbly stayed back in the crowd and let Kenney take centre stage to do the honours.

In Kenney's speech he said how sad it was that Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane weren't able to be there, as they would have been chuffed.  Then Jimmy got called to the stage for photos from the teams of photographers that had gathered. Oh, David Arden (Don Arden's son) was there and joined in the photocall.  He was quite emotional and thanked me and kept holding my hand.  Sweet.

Someone shouted that P J Proby was in the crowd!  He really was (got some pics and will get Mick to download another time).  Then VIPs went off the Bar Red for a social gathering.

I met up with Kenney in the bar.  He signed my album and we chatted.  He is talking about reforming The Faces.  He had dinner with Rod Stewart a while back and he spoke to Mac last weekend.  Apparently Ronnie Wood is up for it too.

Kenney was whisked off yet again for another interview and I got whisked off to be introduced to Fran Pillar (who was the first Fan Club Secretary)  Sadly Fran has had a number of strokes and is now in a wheelchair.  It was so nice to meet her.  What a lovely lady.

This was the end of a very emotional day for me and I shed a few tears on the way out as I hugged Donna from Shaftsbury plc who helped put this whole show together and is responsible for the next big bash on Saturday.....see you there...but don't expect me to have dry eyes on Saturday either.

Note to self "take plenty of tissues".   Oh, must mention a big thanks to hubby Phil who was such a hero the whole day taking lots of pics for you all and chatting to everyone when I couldn't.  He'll be there Saturday too, along with Pauline Corcoran (my friend and former Fan Club Secretary)   Val xxxxx

Title :  Billy Nicholls (with The Small Faces) - Would You Believe
Label & year : Original Immediate IMCP009 LP , Stereo 1968 UNRELEASED UK 1st Press!!!
Matrix's : Side A : IMCP 009 - 1C - 2 , Side B : IMCP 009 - 2C (IMSP - 009 - 2Y crossed out) with 1 G stampers on each side!!!
THIS IS IT!!!!! THIS IS IT!!!!!!!!!! Ever since I first heard this album about 3 years ago after reading about it, i've been on an unstoppable mission to find an original unreleased Immediate 1st Press of this LP, and after years of non stop constant searching and detective work Sherlock would be proud of, i've finally done it!!! I'm still in sheer disbelief that it's sitting next to me right now!!! Every time I pick it up (carefully of course!), I just shake my head in wonder that it even exists!!!
There's a reason why this LP is the most valuable psych album of all time, and it's not just because a tiny handful were ever made, it's because it's stunningly awesome!!! It's an absolute tragedy that this never got released, as it would DEFINITELY be hailed now as a solid gold true 60's classic right up there with Pet Sounds, Blonde On Blonde, Electric Ladyland, Forever Changes, Beggars Banquet, Sgt Pepper, Wheels Of Fire e.t.c, but unfortunately hardly anyone's ever heard it!!! Let me take this oppertunity to tell you a little about this monumental LP...

Wow!  Hard to believe but kind of neat to see.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi and Happy New Year from here (Holland) as well! Thanks for info about WYB. Everytime I see a message like this about the album I feel tempted to sell mine but so far I could resist (and neglect the influence of my wife who still blames me for not selling in 1985 for GBP 800, or for GBP 1,500 in 1995, of for GBP 2,200 in 2003. Seems one my best investments ever since I bought it in the 70s for 50p in a 2nd hand recordstore. Who knows I receive an offer in 2008 that I can’t refuse.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi All,

I’m planning a trip to England starting at the beginning of March. I have tickets to see the four surviving original Zombies three nights running performing their Odessey & Oracle album at the Shepherds Bush Empire. I hope to be able to stay longer but with the cost of hotels and everything else I fear I will run out of cash sooner than I would like.

Instead of hotels or hostels, I'm hoping I can some find places to stay with people I’ve come in contact with via music and the Internet. I do have a place to stay with an old friend in Manchester. Nothing against my friend but I’d much rather spend most of my time in London.

I already have emailed a number of people privately and there is the possibility that I'll end staying here or there.  We'll see.

A sofa or piece of floor with a couple of blankets would do in a pinch.  Anyone who thinks they might be able to help me out can contact me off list at:
mikegriffiths6@...

I have very good house manners.  I even know how to take a record out of its sleeve without putting fingerprints on the surface!

Cheers,
Mike

Hi All,

Billy's new album Rosslyn Road [with brother Mike] is now available limited to
100 copies at this
point - numbered and signed exclusive to Billy's website. Go here:
http://www.billynicholls.com/main.htm [Song samples are available there]

Here's the latest news from Billy himself:

'Rosslyn Road' and other news from Billy
Friday 15th February 2008

Hi Everyone,

Well it's been a long time and we're well into into the new year.

At last! 'Rosslyn Road' is out and available in the Southwest Shop. This is a
Folk Album with some
old, traditional songs, and some new. We've made it a limited edition of 100
signed and numbered.
Very basic packaging and simple booklet of credits.

Please note; Mike Nicholls played Harmonium and Acoustic Bass on 'Crazy Jane On
God'

I'm still writing and working on more songs, but back to my more usual Rattle
bag genre.

Another copy of the original 'Would You Believe' LP went up for sale on Ebay 3rd
Jan this year. 25
bids. Winning bid: £3,212.10 Amazing!

Keith Urban's 'Love Pain And The Whole Crazy Thing' has continued to be a huge
success. It's sold
over 2 million copies in USA, went Double Platinum in Canada, and Platinum in
Australia.

Phil Collins's 'Love Songs' went Platinum in Europe. Both albums feature
different versions of
'Can't Stop Loving You'.

Morgan's still working with 'Muse'. He's resting before the next tour later this
year and working
on his own stuff.

Amy's Band 'Ladybear' is playing more gigs in and around London and getting some
recognition.

Will, my youngest son is doing well in the film business; working with Assistant
Director Chris
Kelly on music videos and adverts.

Well that's all for now. Wishing you the best for 2008.

Best Wishes

Billy.

Here's some additional info about Rosslyn Road from Billy's website:

2008 - "Rosslyn Road" (Southwest Records)
This folk album is something I've wanted to to do for a long time, and it's a
big departure from
the songs I normally write. It's a collaboration with my brother Mike, and has
additional music
from Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains.

The title track was written about the abortion clinic in Rosslyn Road. Many
years ago I saw a
young boy hand over some money to a girl outside the clinic and I made a mental
note to write
about it. Here is the story in a modern folk song.

In total contrast 'Sally In Our Alley' is a very old song with words by Henry
Carey (1633-1743)
and was sung to me as a child by my Grandfather.

'Crazy Jane On God' has lyrics by the poet: W.B. Yeats and set to music by Mike,
Paddy and Myself.
Unfortunately, there was an error in the liner notes; which omitted to say that
Mike Nicholls
played Harmonium and Acoustic Bass on this track.

There is a limited pressing of 100 signed CDs available now. Buy it in the
Online Shop.

God bless you Steve, still miss you - this is for you ...
[TELL ME] HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ME ...

Way back in 1966 the Small Faces had begun work on their second Decca album to follow up the "Small Faces" album. New material had been written which included the first version of " [Tell Me] Have You Ever Seen Me which had a previous working title of "Mystery". But before the band had chance to release a second Decca album the band shelved it and up and left for the Immediate label.

SO, with more studio time to themselves the Small Faces once again began work on new material including material first started at Decca. This included different take on a new polished version of " [Tell Me] Have You Ever Seen Me"  as their first single for Immediate but then had to change their mind's because of Decca's disapproval and legal problems and released "Here Come The Nice/Talk To You" instead. Not to be outdone by Decca, Marriott stuck two fingers up to the Decca label and in a smart and crafty move gave " [Tell Me] Have You Ever Seen Me" away to Jerry Shirley's old band 'Apostolic Intervention' for their first single release [also on Immediate Records].

If you think 'Apostolic Intervention' sounds like a weird band name well other weird band names that covered "Tell Me Have You ever Seen Me" include - Gumball, Stillroven, and Incase.

Steve Marriott & Ronnie Lane went in to the studios with Apostolic members Peter 'Dino' Dines [vocals, keyboards], Angus Shirley [guitar], his younger brother Jerry Shirley [drums] and Bob Argent [bass]. Unfortunately, because Bob was surrounded by his heroes he lost his nerve and was unable to perform so Steve Marriott leapt at the chance to play bass on the session and besides also adding backing vocals Steve also produced the record for the band. Although Ronnie Lane was at the sessions early on and may have been the right person to play bass on the track he didn't stay long with Steve because he didn't like the idea of Steve giving the song away as a single for another band when he felt the song could have been a hit for the Small Faces instead. The track was released 7th
April 1967 but failed to chart.

On the same day  [2nd June 1967] the Small Faces released "Here Come The Nice" on Immediate, Decca Records also released the album "From The Beginning" [LK4879] with the first version of " [Tell Me] Have You Ever Seen Me" on it. The battles was on! The small Faces were finally triumphant when 'From The Beginning' reached number 17 and 'Here Come The Nice' number 12.

Even the first new Immediate album IMLP/IMSP 008] released 24th June 67, was more successful than Decca and reached number 12 also.

Although Decca had got there album "From The Beginning" out first on 2nd June with their version of 'Tell Me'  on, Immediate pulled out all the stops and threw a lot of promotion in to the band's first album "Small Faces which included a give-away promo only 7" single album sampler [AS-1] featuring DJ Tommy Vance announcing "There are but four Small Faces, BUT only one Immediate LP" and also featured excerpts from the Immediate album tracks "Talk To You", "Get Yourself Together", "Green Circles", "All Of Our Yesterdays" and "Up The Wooden Hills". It's interesting to note as well that the excerpts sounds like a different mix plus is timed at 2.53 mins - worth a listen! .... As a  bonus to this story - if you send me your email address I'll send you the promo sampler :0) - other than that you can get the sampler which was later reissued on vinyl [NEMLP 7415] with the re-release of the 1st Immediate album [also vinyl] by Sequel Records [Castle Music] [NEMLP 415] in 1999, plus you can hear the sampler on the cd reissue on the 35th Anniversary edition.

The new Immediate album was a great mix of Psychedelia, soul, rock, acoustic and even folk.
I remember buying the first album from the shops when I was a kid and "Tell Me" was one of my favourite tracks on the album right from the beginning of Kenney's beating drum being faded in followed by Marriott's lung bursting vocals off "I'veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeve - a feeling that I know you" and certainly had me throwing my arms up in the air and shouting "Hey Hey, Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey" excellent!

All in all as far as I am aware and what i have heard there is now 5 versions of the song, although like I have said before in other write-ups there are versions that have been re-mixed and remastered but these are the blatant different versions best to collect in my opinion ...

1/ The Decca version known as the '1st version' is a rawer vocal version with slightly different lyrics and found on the 1967 vinyl LP "from The Beggining". This version is timed at 2.17 mins.

2/ Version 2 [Immediate] in "mono" : Released on original 'mono' vinyl LP 1967: By the time the Small Faces came to release this version on Immediate, Steve Marriott's vocals had matured immensely and his vocals had more range than Texas letting Steve sing this track in a much higher note than the 1st version. Timed at 2.15 mins

3/ Version 2 [Immediate] in "stereo": Released on original 'stereo' vinyl LP 1967: Timed at 2.14 mins and my favourite version for crystal clear quality and stereo separation.

To hear the original album's stereo and mono versions of version 2 I recommend you buy the 35th Anniversary Edition of the 1st Immediate album released in 2002 which was also remastered.

4/ Alternate take [also known as version 3]: This version was first released in 'mono' on the 1984 U.S.A 2 LP set "Small Faces-Big Music" and the 'stereo' alternate take was first heard in 1991 on the UK sequel label CD "Small Faces - Green Circles" plus the Sony Music U.S.A CD "There Are But Four Small Faces". Timed at 2.04 mins and shorter than the other versions, this version has Ronnie more up in the mix and at times singing along with Steve side by side especially on the mix on the 4-cd box set "The Immediate Years" [Charley Records]

5/ Studio outtake/Acetate: Timed at 2.05 mins this version can be found on the J60 cd "All Or Nothing". It's a slower version with less backing and is more like a guide vocal mix.

Below I have transcribed the Immediate lyrics from the "Stereo" version plus detailed the variations in lyrics from the other Immediate versions thereafter. [bonus Decca lyrics below].

Once again I must mention the accent in the song. Like us Northerners Steve uses the word "A" instead of "I" in the line "I seen flowers a-breaking through the concrete" [pronounced like "Ah"]. Steve sings "A seen flowers a-breaking through the concrete". Also after each line the band are using a cross between "hey" and "yeah" so I've compromised and put "Heah".

A few people have asked me in the past as well is it right Steve sings "Acid flowers breaking through the concrete", but no it's not.
After listening to all the versions of the Small Faces [and various cover versions] you can quite clearly hear Steve sing "I seen" on version 3.

All together now.....

[TELL ME] HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ME [stereo version]

I've a feeling that I know you,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
Tell me, have you ever seen me,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
I hear, I see, have you seen me.

Too long, I've been hear without you,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
Tell me, have you ever seen me,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,

Words seem out of place,
All my life I've known your face...

Have you ever seen me [My, my, my],
Have you ever seen me.

I seen flowers a-breaking through the concrete,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
Listen everybody, I can hear them breathing,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
I hear, I see, have you seen me.

I said I got a feeling that I know you,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
I gotta know, have you ever seen me,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
Tell me baby, have you ever seen me,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
Heah heah, heah, heah, have you ever seen me,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
I can tell you baby, have you ever seen me,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
Heah, now keep on tryin' have you ever seen me,
Heah......[end]..

[TELL ME] HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ME [mono mix]

Instead of just 1 "heah" at the end you get..

Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah oh,.....[fade]....

[TELL ME] HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ME [version 3]

Found on the Small Faces box set "The Immediate Years". Version 3 seems more double tracked with the vocals plus Ronnie Lane is heard singing along with Steve. There is more echo in the mix as well.

The last verse goes like this......

I said I got a feeling that I know you,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
A-tell me, have you ever seen me,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
I gotta know, have you ever seen me,
Heah heah, heah, heah, heah, heah,
Have, have, have, have, have, have, have,
Heah heah......[fade]

[TELL ME] HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ME [Decca version]

This version I think is much rawer a few different lyrics now and again starting at........

Words seem out of place,
All my life I've known your face,

Have you ever seen me, all right,
Have you ever seen me,

I seen flowers a breaking through the concrete,
[Hey hey, heay heay heay heay],
Listen everybody, I can hear them breathing,
[Hey hey, heay heay heay heay],
I hear, I see, Have you seen me,

You know I said I gotta feeling that I know you,
[Hey hey, heay heay heay heay],
Tell me, have you ever seen me,
[Hey hey, heay heay heay heay],
I said I gotta feeling that I know you,
[Hey hey, heay heay heay heay],
Tell me, I said have you ever seen me,
[Hey hey, heay heay heay heay],
I wanna know, have you ever seen me,
[Hey hey, heay heay heay heay],
Have, have, have, have, have, have, all right.......fade....

Thanks for the heads up on that.  I'll have to make sure to get that issue.  What's on the cover?  Boy, that albums just continues to keep on growing in value and statue, doesn't it?  Having said that, Love Songs is still my favourite album by Billy.

Cheers,
Mike

The Top 3 positions are filled by The Beatles and at Number 4 is
Billy Nicholls - Would You Believe lp issued on Immediate IMCP009 -
this is currently valued at £2500

All the best
Barry
