Now now, old timers! Cut Robert some slack:P
Hey, I like "Umbrella", but let's be honest now; the
Larry Klein production does tend to clog the ears.
"Umbrella" was my introduction to the Cocteau Mission,
I mean the Innocence Mission. Think of it as an
artifact of a different era. Indeed it was the Cocteau
Twins-esque production that helped draw my attention
back in the early 1990s. And to be fair, that was key.
Karen was writing some great lyrics, but in the spirit
of Michael Stipe, it's a good thing that each CD had a
lyric sheet.
"Glow" is also my favorite; Producer Dennis Herring
really brought out the right instrumentation and
production level. Having said that, Robert, don'tgive
up on "Umbrella!" When you listen to it, dissect it.
Let your ears peel back the layers of production,
which are sometimes pretty thick, and give yourself a
few listens to absorb the lyrics and melodies. Some of
the songs I didn't "get" for quite some time, such as
"Beginning the World," But I like now.
Since those first two albums are out of print, it
would be neat if IM recorded some of those songs in a
more "unplugged" format. (Hint, hint to the Perrises
and the Bitts!) I was just thinking; my folks back
east have that beautiful old Ampex 12" Reel-to-reel
and a large living room where they've recorded music,
and it's not far from Lancaster...(dream, dream.)

Maybe you should clean out your ears.

I just got Umbrella and I have to say I'm
disappointed. I wonder if Larry Klein was the wrong
producer. The only song I really like is And Hiding
Away.
